Johnsburg Rescue Squad To Sponsor June 4 We were more than a little bit pleased to join the crowd last Sunday at the dedication of the new home of the American Legion Post No. 491. Many World War 1 vets are still very active fellows and it was with great pride that we witnessed good, old fashioned patriotism in the entire program. Vets of all ages were enthusiastic participants in the program. And we are not forgetting the Auxiliary girls who do so much for so many in making such events possible. This beautiful new building will be known as a home, not a hall. We couldn't help thinking of Edgar Guest's poem "It Takes A Heap O'Livin' In A House To Make It Home" and know from the splendid start that this will be a home for many years not only for the Vets but for good citizens inthe McHenry area. We wish that many more could have heard the patriotic, straight from the shoulder address given by Fredrick C. Merritt, Commander, Department of Illinois. He had some great punch lines and left no doubt that he is a true American. McHenry High just wound up a highly successful golf season with close wins over Barrington and Elgin Larkin. Coach Chuck Cuda can smile when he looks forward to four erf his five man team being back next year. Our congratulations to the team and their coach. We cannot urge you too strongly to get out and vote at the Junior College election Saturday. Other cities and villages in'the county are taking an active interest in choosing xBB&dates ^ tins college board. Not forgetting many 'father fine candidates, McHen- Iry must be alive in electing lo- ;cal candidates. Our area is .growing fast. The approval by •a majority of those voting for »the college was impressive in •McHenry. Now, let's remember Sour right to vote on Saturday. % We are going to take off for pother: parts over the coming ^holiday weekend and may be sending a column from Detroit. vOur daughter, Patricia, is making all the plans for mom and Ifiad and hasn't forgotten that the White Sox will be in Detroit lo meet the Tigers during cur visit. Thai's what we call' planning. .7 We predict that the White Sox will try to work out a trade involving Pete Ward before the tr adiqg deadline. He isn't going to move Buford off third nor does it lode like Tommy Mc- •Craw is going to be crowded off first. From all reports, 'Pete doesn't cover left field Jwith the greatest of ease. So let's watch. : The only good prediction we ever made was that the Orioles would have trouble rebounding ' MILLER. I HE AIRE I PHONE 358-0032 MAY 26 - JUNE 1 so I HEAR By Earl Walsh after their World Series romp, but nobody paid any attention to us. Benefit Races At Bald Oh Boy! Right at this point we tuned in the Sox - Twins game and heard that Pete Ward had hit a home run, then made a perfect throw to home plate to nail a runner. Now tb think up a new prediction! We often wonder who is home minding the store while all these people are marching. A couple of years ago we came out of the County Building in Chicago to see a* group of marching demonstrators. One fellow watching the goings - on said, "Take those television cameras away and they'd all go home." Marching had a different meaning in our day. When a kid got out of line, one of his parents would command, "You march right up to your room and stay there ~ no supper." And they used to wind up a graphaphone and put on a marching tune as we entered school at the end of recess. We lined up and marched. George Johnson came in the other day to "Congratulate you on the success of your Cubs." Our who? Looking over the baseball rosters makes us wonder where all the Irish ball players are. They can't all be on the police force. We used to see the names McGraw, Hogan, Collins, Murphy, Cochrane, Hartnett and Walsh. Now look: Drabowsky, Etchebarren, Epstein, Gonzalez, Hershberger, Aspromorrte, Pizarro, Mazeroski, and so on down the list. Sounds like a Notre Dame football team. Then we have those musical names like Conigliaro andBoccabella. May the sun shine on Memorial Day, but may it hide behind a cloud for a few minutes to remind us of the real meaning of this day set^aside. On June 4th the Johnsburg Rescue Squad Benefit Regatta will be held at Bald Knob Resort, 522 Bald Knob Road, McHenry. The speedboat race will consist of four classes of stock outboard hydroplanes, four classes of astock outboard utilities, and several classes of outboard pleasure craft. The race course, set (Hi the west side of Pistakee Lake, will be the scene of thrills and spills all afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. Some of the boats are capable of speeds over 70 M.P.H. About 100 entries are expected with drivers from all! over the Midwest attending, including Illinois High-Point Champions Brian Berger of Park Ridge (amateur) and Ken Lund of Chicago (professional). By Ozzie Osborn The golf team had its most successful season for the past 10 years with all win, 2 loss, and 1 tie. The team beat Barrington 165 to 169 last Monday and the following day beat district winner Elgin Larkin 160- 163. Against Barrington Frank Cuda shot a 36, one over par, and Tom Evans shot a 39. Against Larkin, Tim Martin and Mark Domoto each had 39>s to pace the victory, and Robert Mauch had a 40. This year's team showed tremendous balance with five boys contributing to the victorious season. Encouraging note for Mr. Cuda's team is that Frank Cuda, Mark Domoto, Tim Martin, and Bob Mauch will be back next year. Senior Tom Evans will be missed. With these four boys, plus a 10 win 3 loss record for the sophomores, the team should again provide a very successful year in 1968. Then, Dot Beckenb^ Ugh tells me the phone calls began coming in from allparts, inquiring about whether the final day of TEAM PLAY would be played. After some deliberation, it Was decided to call it off. Now the way it stands, each individual foursome is to play their final 9 holes at their convenience, just so it is played before June 6th, which happens to be FLAG DAY. There is nothing arranged for next Tuesday on account of it being Decoration Day. The fallowing week, Tuesday June 6th, FLAG DAY will be played and this will be the qualifying round for MATCH PLAY which starts Tuesday, June 13th. LOU CONSAGO Lake Region YMCA Brave» Plan Spring The McHenry Sportsmen's Club will stage their popular "THREE for a BUCK" Chicken Shoot Sunday May 28th, right on the heels of their successful Mother's Day Shoot. In following the club's established rule, good shooters, f&ir shooters and lucky shooters will all get their share of the meat by competing in either event. For the dead-eye dicks who prefer to shoot the works, there is the straight ten bird event, the high gun taking the three chickens. Six five-woman squads of mothers, shooting as guests of the club, carried home eighteen fat young chickens at the Mother's Day shoot, averaging out six fryers for each ten contestants. They all went home happy. _ Shooting will start at 11 a,m. and continue until dark. Sons who are inthe first through Little League In Tribute To Paulie Overton tfiy Bill Bolger It isn't easy to write a column this week. We are saddened by the death of nine year old Paulie Overton in a tragic accident last Thursday. Paulie was one of our Little Leaguers and we felt a special fondness for him. It was my good fortune to know Paulie well and just to meet him whether it be at the Little League field, in the school corridor or wherever we chanced to meet, his shy little smile and "hello Mr. Bolger" always made my day a little brighter. Paulie possessed those boyhood ideals which makes us so proud of our youth. That he was taken from us before he could put those ideals into actions is a loss for all who would have known him. But we can learn from those ideals -and we, too, may someday find that mystic land of wondrous deeds. To the Overton family we offer our prayers and sympathy. May you find some comfort in knowing that the people in this community are as one in expressing their sorrow. third grades are eligible topar? ticipate. Stock Races At Wilmot Now On Friday Nights The modified stock cars ran to a highly satisfied but thin crowd at the Wilmot oval on its season opener Friday night May 19th. Less than 700 fans braved the cold and windy night to witness (me of the closest feature races run so far this season. Billy Goeden of St. Michaels, Wis., is credited with East time of 17:17, a new track record. Duane Harris of Lake Villa, Dl. battled Don Schuppel of Kewaskum, Wis. for the feature win with Jim Bozeman of Waukegan finishing third and John Reimer of Caledonia, Wis. coming in fourth. After experiencing car trouble during the qualifying runs, Ron Bergsma of Richmond, Dl. left the track for home, made some hurry up repairs to the car, returned to the 4rack in time to make the semi, finishing in the number one spot. Jim Smith of Patenjim Auto Racing stated that regardless of his disappointment in the very light opening night attendance, he full well realizes that it will take a few weeks of Friday night modified racing to get the fans used to the switch from Saturday nights to Friday nights.
