The influx of automotive traffic, by state fair visitors and exhibitors, will create its usual amount of hazards. Keep this in mind as you culminate plans to attend the great agricultural exposition. Additional State, City, County and Auxiliary safety patrolmen will be on duty to aid and direct you. Well planned traffic control devices will be in effect for the convenience of the majority. Strict enforcement is imperative. So, follow the signs and orders and you will get there quicker, better and without trouble. Don't be the "fool who fouls up" by making wrong turns, ignoring traffic officers and parking*^ in prohibited areas. Leave a little earlier in the morning to allow time for a inorf careful and safer trip. If you plan to stay very late and have a long way to go, don't attempt to drive back that night. Reserve ahead if you plan to stay overnight with friends or at a hostelry. This year, be the "judges' choice" for careful and safe driving. A blue ribbon at the fair isn't promised, but a happier, safer time is guaranteed! Public Cooperates With First Use Of Tornado Alert John J. Shay, director of McHenry Civil Defense, announced that he was very satisfied with the cooperation exhibited , by the public on Saturday, June 10, when for the first time it was necessary to use the sirentoalertthepublic to an approaching tornado. He received a report of a tornado noted over Wonder Lake, heading in an easterly direction. Fire chief Ed Justenwas standing by at Station one and immediately set off the signal, which is a three-to-five minute steady blast. Shoppers in business districts sought shelter in the stores, with most business -people offering assistance. Mr. Shay said that one problem still exists and should be brought to tthe attention of the public. When a similar situation occurs, the public' must not phone the police or fire department except to report an emergency. All personnel answering these phones are being instructed to not give out any weather information in an effort to reduce the number of plume calls for this information. There is no all clear signal and for that reason people must stay tuned to their radios for the broadcast of this information. Tho UnhmnHy Man With the job nearly done, the mower clogged. Rather than turn the mower off, this impatient teenager reached ihto the discharge chute--and risked losing his fingers;*£. if not his whole hand. Mowing with rotary machines Si can be safe and pleasurable if the operator turns off his impulses and turns on hio common sense, according to the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute. A prime rule is never to tinker with or refuel a running engine. As important is the need to keep the lawn free of the sticks, stones and debris that the whirling blade can hurl at bullet-like speeds, with injury to the operator or someone close by. Pulling the mower toward you or mowing up and down a hill instead of sideways are other ways to court disaster. In every situation, caution is - the key. 1. If you buy a mower, make. ' sure you read the booklet and know all the controls. 2. Don't leave the motor running if you step away. 3. Watch your clothing- Loose clothing or the use of sneakers is an invitation to injury. Mowers are a great invention for saving time and effort and .. assuring you of a beautiful lawn. But, consider that with every, mower comes a built-in warning:, "HANDLE WITH CARE".
