We have felt that this particular class, with its fine schol- (continued on page 14) CHILD STRUCK BY AUTO SUSTAINS SERIOUS INJURIES Connie Sue Kibler, 7-yearold daughter of Mr. and Mra, Larry KiblOr of "134 Valley View drive, Lakemoor, was recovering in McHenry hospital this week from extensive injuries sustained when she was struck by a car near her home Friday evening. Lakemoor police said the little girl darted into the path of a car driven by Susan Ehrhardt of Lakemoor about 7:30 p.m. No ticket was given. Island Lake Business Man Dies Saturday Father Of Two Fatally Injured On Leaving Club Andrew H. Sopko, 48, of Briar, street, Island Lake, became the county's thirteenth fatality of the year when he was struck by a car as he walked across River road, near Snug Harbor Boat club, late Friday evening. He was fatally injured when a south-bound car driven by Conrad C. Green, 17, of 128 Lake Shore, McHenry, hit him as he walked with his daughter, Susan, and the tatter's girl friend. The three had just had dinner at the club at 801 N. River road and were walking across the blacktop to the parking lot when Green's car approached. BRAKES FAIL Green told authorities he was rounding a curve when another . vehicle pulled out in front of him and turned left onto River road, driving toward McHenry. He added that he applied the brakes to avoid a collision with the car but they failed. When the other auto moved on, he noticed Sopko in the road and said he pulled into the other lane, but the pedestrian did likewise and he was unable to avoid hitting him. Green admitted that an inspection bad revealed Vi bis brakes were inadequate. He was ticketed for driving with unsafe equipment and placed under $2,500 bond. Sopko was taken by ambulance to McHenry hospital at 11:45 p.m. and died two hours later. Meyer is in charge of the contest, which will be judged Monday evening, July 31, at the new Legion home at 7 p.m. Judges will consider each contestant on the basis of poise, pertness and personality. It is not a talent contest. A gift will be given to each little girl entering the contest. Previous local and district winners were Nancy Schultz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schultz, in 1965 and Claudia Gray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Gray, in 1966. Chamber Commerce Honors Dads With Gift Certificates The McHenry Chamber of Commerce, in paying tribute to fathers On their special day in June, is offering gift certificates to the lucky dads chosen by chance this Saturday, June 17. First prize is a $25 gift certificate, second, $15 and third, $10. All that is necessary is for a father to register in person with any retail member of the C. of C. No purchase is required. The deadline is 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon, after which winners will be selected. Tickets are now on sale by members. Robert E. Hirsch Named Principal Of Valley View Robert E. Hirsch was named to serve as principal of Valley View school for the 1967-68 year at a meeting of the board of School District 15, held Monday evening. Contracts were approved for five new teachers. Judith Sauer will teach French and English at Junior high school, Margaret Weller and Marion Prince, first grade, and John J. Nilles, sixth grade, at Hilltop and Carolyn Kinnerk, sixth grade at Edgebrook. It was announced that Mrs. Jill Dial had resigned as a teacher in the special educa* tion department at Edgebrotik, The board has considered tftg services of an architecttodraw specifications to remodel the Landmark building for central administration offices. Further plans will be announced as they progress. Approval was given for the Community Action agency to use three rooms at Hilltop school for the Head Start program this summer, with District 15 providing custodial service. Principal Robert Putnam of Hilltop school reported that 420 pupils have enrolled at that school for the summer program. Classes are being conducted by Mrs. Ruth Haasl and Miss Bonnie Campbell. The regularly scheduled school board meeting on June 27 has been cancelled » The contest to choose the 1967 Marine Festival Queen is almost here. , The public is invited to the 8 p.m. contest this Friday night, June 16, at the McHenry VFW, Where sixteen aspirants for the Miss McHenry crown will vie. ^Judges who will determine t|ie winner have been chosen, Frank Low, Marine Festival committee chairman, said today. They are A1 Arazia, representative of Coty Cosmetics, who is from the parent company In Paris; Mr. and Mrs. Dermott frmwoody, chief of the Canadian travel bureau and a representative of Expo 67; and a senior stewardess of Pan- American. The contest is sponsored by the McHenry VFW and auxiliary as a community service project. There is no admission charge to this event. Plans for the Marine Festival Days, climaxed with the parade and drum and bugle competition on July 16, are moving forward in good fashion. The Miss McHenry candidates have been undergoing modeling and. charm instruction fay Mrs. Carol Jepson and Mrs. Sharon Lopez. Co-chairmen are Mrs. Jean Wiles and Mrs. Gen Bradley. Miss McHenry, who will be crowned by Kris Chelini, reigning Miss McHenry, will receive an exciting trip to Canada's Expo 67. She will be guest of the Chamber of Commerce at Expo for five days. Residents Complain C©©peralIon Requested To Malt Unscrupulous Bi less Prac es Milwaukee Man Is Charged With Property Damage A Milwaukee man of 57 went berserk in the Riverside hotel last Monday night and threw a couch and end table through a picture window. He was arrested by McHenry police and charged with criminal damage to property. Steven Gray had been put off the Greyhound bus in McHenry for creating a nuisance, and authorities took him to the hotel to stay for the night. Sometime later the damage occurred. Bulletin An unidentified man about 40 years of age was reported by McHenry firemen to have drowned in the Fox river, near 614 Country Club drive, about 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. He apparently jumped in for a swim and failed to appear above the surface. The man was a Chicagoan visiting in McHenry. Residents said the undertow was extremely fast moving. This was the decision of both city and Chamber representatives who met for the monthly board meeting of the C. of C. last week. Many complaints have been received from persons misled by solicitors on either the product sold or sales procedure. Mayor Donald P. Doherty told members that state legal limitations made licensing impractical, but it was generally agreed that authorization is needed. Residents approached by solicitors are urged to ask for a letter of authorization from the city, and if this is not produced, to refrain from any dealings with the solicitor. Allan Leibsohn explained plans for the sidewalk sale to be held Saturday, July 15, in conjunction with the Marine Festival. DISCUSS PARKING • Mayor Doherty and Council Members Etten and Pitzen also (continued on page 14) Stage Band To Open Season The McHenry stage band will present the first concert of the season in the city park band shell from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 15. Mayor Donald Doherty and Alderman Joseph Etten will be on hand officially to open the summer series of concerts sponsored by the city. . Featured guests on this week's program will be the McHenry Choral club, which will sing "Dreams" and "Mood Indigo". The eighteen-member stage band, directed by Stanley Vycital, will include among their selections, "Kansas City" sung by Dick Piatt, medley from "The Sound of Music", "Swingin' Down the Lane", "Poor Butterfly", "Star Dust", "Michelle", V1 Magic Trumpet", "Yellow Bird", "The Swingin' Shepherd Blues", and "I Can't Stop Lovin' You". 16 to 18 in the McHenry Junior high school. The fair, sponsored by the woman's auxiliary to McHenry hospital, will be open each day noon to 10 p.m. In addition to a one-man showing by Mrs. Barbara Tade, there will be musical entertainment all three days and a young idea fashion show on Saturday evening* In addition to viewing the award winning art pieces which have been selected by a distinguished panel of judges,the llth Annual Country Art Fair, to open Friday in the McHenry Junior high school, willprovide a fair atmosphere in the fine arts field. A Trunk Showing of the finest art in northern Illinois will be displayed not only in the fields of painting and drawing, children's art, sculpture and ceramics, but in music, dancing and puppetry. In addition to a one-man showing by Mrs. Barbara Tade, Crystal Lake, there are many other displays. Mrs. Tade will show paintings in oil, crayon, pen, pencil, stitchery, collages and monoprints. The real fair atmosphere comes from other aspects in the fine arts field all coordinated by Bob Gray, Crystal Lake, in (continued on page 14) City Sets More Rigid Rules For Tots Using Beach Reports have come in that. McHenry's beach on Fox river has been very crowded during the current hot spell and great concern has been expressed regarding the care of the younger children. Some parents have left their tots for long periods, depending on the life guards to watch them. In other cases, older brothers or sisters have taken the small ones to the beach and not watched out for their safety. City officials are deeply concerned about the safety of all persons using the beach and will insist that younger children be accompanied by parents or persons old enough to be responsible for them. Actions of some persons using the beach have made it necessary for police to make stops to maintain proper order. Pat Long Receives Eagle Award At Court Of Honor Pat Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Long of 813 N. Lillian street, McHenry, will receive his Eagle award Saturday evening, June 17, when an outdoor court of honor is held in the wooded area near the Legion grounds. The court of honor and camp fire program will start at 8 o'clock, when the public and friends of scouting are invited to participate. The young man has earned the following merit badges: camping, citizenship in the community, citizenship in the nation, cooking, first aid, lifesaving, nature, personal fitness, safely, soil and water conservation, rowing, canoeing, citizenship in the home, gardening, basketry, home repairs, music, scholarship, railroading and electricity. He also completed other requirements necessary to receive scouting* s highest award. McHenry Girls Seek Dairy Princess Plan to attend the Country Art Fair this weekend. BARBARA DIEDRICH Ten enthusiastic young women-- all with experience on a dairy farm -- sure helping the Mcaenry county Dairy Promotion council with its 1967 promotional activities. In addition, they will be seeking the McHenry County Dairy KAREN JUSTEN Princess crown now worn by Bonnie Davidson, 1966 winner. The candidates have local sponsors in the competition.
