You bring your own food and a mat and mosquito ne^ 1 ,• boarded the Takala for an eightday cruise. * • \ i "The villages along the Kinabatangan river are poor. The soil is shallow and the people's diet is bad. The natives wash, cook and urinate in the muddy river water. Tuberculosis is widespread. "Further up the rivertimber camps come into sight. Timber is Sabah's biggest industry. Logs are floated down the river to port, then exported to Japan.; "A worker can earn good wages in a timber camp, ai much as $500 a month, but the work is highly dangerous. Little safety equipment is used. "I stayed at a timber camp for a few days, arriving on pay day. The workers were cheering on cocks with foot-long spurs, the cockfight being the main form of entertainment upriver. SHARE HOUSING "An even poorer region of Borneo is in the state of Sarawak. Whole communities live in a huge shared house, called alonghouse. The children often suffer from worms. Many of the men, who carry pouches containing homegrown tobacco, have lung cancer. "Hie natives burn the growth off hills and plant rice. This depletes the soil for sevenyears and necessitates moving to a new location. "But changes are taking place all over Borneo. Peace Corps volunteers are helping in government resettlement schemes where natives are taught to plant wet rice. Two or three crops can be grown each year in the same spot. "The natives are also beginning to supplement their meager incomes from rubber with a few cash crops like pepper and oil palm. "Schools, hospitals and access roads are reaching more and more people. "I taught in Sandakan, a coastal city of 30,000 people, fts papulation is about 90 per air makes sense. Because it filters out allergenic pollen and dust. CHINESE ENVIED "The Chinese have aroused envy and resentment all over Southeast Asia by their wealth and exclusiveness. In Malaysia, laws discriminate against them in certain professions and in landholdings. „ "The Chinese cling to their own language, associations and schools. I taught in a Chinesemedium high school. About half the faculty were Taiwanese, several of whom had been educated in the United States. "The first day of school I looked at the Oriental faces of Miss Clark, at right, is shown with one of her students at school. my classes and thought, 'They all look alike. I'll never be able to tell them apart.' Hie students later confided they could only identify Europeans, , as all .white persons are called, bjy hair color. "Strict Chinese discipline is a boon to the teacher. Students rise and bow to him before and after class. Evoking a response to a question is far more difficult than maintaining silence. "When the students finally found their voices, they asked, 'How many Chinese are there in Chicago?* 'Why do you call a coward yellow?* SCHOOL SYSTEM "The school system follows the British pattern, layingheavy emphasis on periodic examinations. Cramming begins at the start of the senior year. Seniors forsake basketball for latenight sessions with the books. ' "After final exams, the senior class has a trip to the nation's capital, Kuala Lumpur, a gift of local merchants. For many, it is the first time they have left their home town. "It is rewarding to work in a country where you are constantly made to feel wanted and appreciated. Malaysians are gracious hosts, sharing their social life with Peace Corps volunteers. "Fun might be eating a rice and curried chicken lunch with your hands on a palm-fringed beach while somone strummed a guitar. Or a ten-course dinner of such Chinese delicacies as bird's nest soup and shark's fins, washed down with brandy and polite toasts. Or a noisy game of mah-jong, a Chinese gambling favorite. . "Before flying home byway of Asia, the Middle East and Europe, all the Sabah volunteers gathered for a conference to evaluate our jobs and prepare us to re-enter the United States, presumably a traumatic experience. "All of us agreed we would do it all over again. And quite a few extended their contract for a year."
