HOLIDAY 1-IILLS NEWS INEZ YOUNG 885-487* Top Latin Pupil Among 41 At Conference Mourn Death Of Local Resident" TTie sincere sympathy of the resident of Holiday Hills is extended to Bernhard Schwanke and his children; Helga, Axel, Bruinhilda and Lizzie and grandchildren, on the death of their beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Gertrud Schwanke. She died on Thursday, June 22, in Cook County hospital where she had undergone open heart surgery two weeks before. Funeral services and interment were in McHenry on Saturday, June 24. During her stay in the hospital she required a great deal of blood and the' family now needs to replace thirty-four (34) pints. If you can donate blood, please contact either Axel Schwanke of Mc Henry or me and I will see to it that arrangements are made. WOMAN'S CLUB The Holiday Hills Woman's Club WILL meet during the months of July and August. At their last regular monthly meeting, the women voted not to disband for the summer as they did last year. A luau is being considered as possible entertainment for one of the meetings. A committe is investigating the possibility of obtaining playground equipment for the beach area. Mary Mahon still has some of that good candy, how about giving her a call? The games and entertainment for the last meeting were under the direction of Ear line Mettelka and Mary Mahon and hostesses for the evening were Jo Janik and Connie Catanzaro. LYNDA'S GRADUATION Over seventy friends, neighbors and relatives gathered at the Abbink home on Sunday, June 11, to celebrate Lynda's graduation from McHenry high school. Enjoying the fun, food, games and singing were Grandma Berens, Grandma Fisher and Grandma and Grandpa Abbink, the Les Berens, Ray Berens, McSweeneys, Porazins, Vivian Thomas, Liz Abbink, the Bernie Abbinks, the Dowhins, Walters, Harpers, Jendes, Breedes, Heises, Teubers, Wiles, Debbie and Kathy Constance and the Youngs. Last week, the Abbinks had out of town. house guests for the week. Bill's sister, Rosemary, and her husband, Jim Constance, and their children, Jimmy, Kathy, Debbie and Betty, were vacationing from their home in Norfork, Va. SWIMMING LESSONS Swimming lessons will be concluded at the Lake beach tomorrow, with the awards and certificates being presented by the instructor, Pepper Bieschke. A list of certificates earned will appear in this column in two weeks. BELATED GREETINGS Belated birthday greetings to Dean Heise on June 20 and to Debbie Catanzaro on the twentyfourth. Sorry that there was no column last week. On the day that the column was to be written I received the unhappy news that my Dad was hospitalized and will be for some time to come. If you have news for the column, please call either in the morning or evening because many of my afternoons will be spent traveling to Hinsdale to visit him. WONDER LffiE EVELYN RASKE PHONE 65S-4962 HOLD DONKEY BASEBALL GAME FRIDAY NIGHT There will be a donkey baseball game tomorrow night at Christ the King church baseball field. The managers and coaches of the Wonder Lake Boys' baseball versus the Wonder Lake Firemen and Kiwanians. All proceeds go the the boys' baseball league. ELECT OFFICERS At the June 15 meeting the nominations and elections of officers was held with the following members being installed at the August meeting: For president Alice Rossberg was elected, Vice President Betty Paulin, Second Vice President Jackie Ulman, Treasurer Diane Ski dm ore, Scretary Louise Sineni, Chaplain Harriet Bennett, Historian Marian Tobin and Sargeant of Arms Lois Hack. During the business meeting, a donation was made to the Girl Scouts. The Gold Star Mother will be at the Gold Star luncheon at the convention in Chicago. There will be no meeting in July except for the special one to discuss the plans for the installation. BOY SCOUTS TROOP 145 Fourteen boys attended Camp Lowden near Oregon for one week. Mark Ehredt, Raymond Wenk, Mark Kaefer, Rick Berndt, Glen Hampton, Richard Calkins, Richard Bland, Jeff R obi son, Jerry Robison, David Betts, Ed Betts, Ray Low, Luke Ackerman andEd Weisenberger under the leadership of Ward Ehredt who spent the full week with the boys as counselor, worked on merit badges during the week. Ray Lau, Richard Bland, Glen Hampton and Ward Ehredt were called out for the Order of the Arrow Thursday night with the ceremony taking place on Friday evening. Activities such as rifle range obstacle course, five-mile hike, etc., were just some of the things the boys were involved in. The water front and canoeing were cancelled because of high'water. Also on hand to give Ward Ehredt a hand was John Doherty and Bob Betts. KIWANIltoS NEWS Walter Dean, Chairman of McHenry County Board of Supervisors, addressed the WLKC on litterbugging and air water pollution. Mr. Dean gave a summary of his efforts as McHenry township supervisor in removing non-operable cars from the roads and from private yards. He said he was very successful on private contact with the individuals in notifying them of the recent McHenry County ordinance against unlicensed cars. In most cases the owner cooperated in having them removed rather than be given a citation by the zoning office. Considerable discussion was had (Hi the air pollution and odors in the Ringwood area. Besides Walter Dean we had an interclub visit from the Sycamore Club with Kiwanians Charles Jones, Joe Bussons, Dick Barton and Roger Jacobson. They gave the WLK a standing invitation to visit the Sycamore Club any Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at the Kendale Ranch. SICK LIST Get well soon to: Cindy Keith who has been in McHenry Hospital for the past three weeks and to Donald and Kenneth Schroeder, who both were terribly ill this past week. Sixty-nine top Latin pupils from forty-one Illinois communities are attending the University of Illinois High School Latin conference June 25-July 1 at Urbana. To be considered, a pupil must have completed at least two years of high school Latin, and be recommended by his Latin teachers. The conference is conducted by the U. of I. department of the classics, Urbana, and Division of University Extension. K is designed to present aspects of the civilizations of Greece and Rome not usually covered in high school. Each day's schedule includes two lectures and two discussion groups. Topics include Roman history and art; Sallust, Cicero, Catallus, and Horace; nuismatics; the teaching of Latin; Greek mythology and religion; the Greek world; and an introduction to the ancient Greek language. Pupils will have access to the U. of I. Classics Library and to the Classical Museum. Susan Robertson of 3715 W. Lee street, a student of McHenry high school, was chosen to attend. Be fPise Shop In McHenry State Takes Action On Many Driver Licenses The office of Secretary of State Paul Powell has announced the revocation of the driver licenses of Ronald W. Boone of Crystal Lake and Maurice J. Brasile of Woodstock for driving while intoxicated and Lawrence J. Hostalek of Wonder Lake and Russell EJSchuringa of Crystal Lake for three violations. Suspensions were ordered for Peter M. DeMore of Spring Grove, Jon G. DeVine of Cary, Curtis L. Freund and Anna Luther of Woodstock, Richard W. Glenn and Jeanine M. Maynard of Crystal Lake and William W. McCarroll of 3506 W. Biscayne McHenry, all for three violations; also Lisa A. Havel of 5413 N. Circle drive, Pistakee Highlands, for driving while license or permit has been revoked or suspended. Secretary of State Powell has announced the Driver's License division of his office has rescinded the suspension of the license of John P. Harper, R. R. 1, Cary. This action was taken following review of record which disclosed that Harper' s record does not presently show three or more offenses committed within a twelve month period. The office also has rescinded the revocation of the license of James W. Dudley, 1515 Madison street, Woodstock. This action was taken following receipt of information from the Circuit court of Woodstock that a previous report of a guilty finding on a charge of driving while intoxicated was in error and that the case was not prosecuted. The office has rescinded the suspension of the license of George E. Booker, 8717 Shady Lane avenue, Wonder Lake. This action was taken following review of record which disclosed that duplicate reports for a single conviction were received from the Circuit court of Woodstock for the offense of collision involving damage to vehicles only, failure to stop, exchange information and make report.
