Hie time has came to see what's cookta*. The weeks seem to fly. Looking bade over the week, we think of the band concert and the pleasure of seeing so many people enjoying the music and park. If band concerts are old fashioned, so are hundreds of people who enjoy them. A few more old fashioned ways would suit us. And the singing of Irish songs didn't do a thing biit please us. a player being injured, then see him out on the field in all his glory the next Saturday. In baseball, they put 'em on the disabled list. We heard a good one. ft John Boehm of Kane Ave. was doing some painting a week ago Sunday and dashed down to Ruck's Hardware about noon when paint was running low. Being a nice guy, he took a few kids in the car for the ride. Somehow in the mmro of locking front and rear (Jours, John and his friends were locked in the store, ft took a bit of phoning before they got out. If you want to get locked in a store, John, pick a grocery store and stay for lunch. Amazing seems to be the word for those hard hitting Cubs. How their pitching staff is holding up we'll never know. One las to feel proud of Ken Holtzman going inio military service without bellyaching, but must wonder how high Manager Durocher would have his team rath Holtzman er some ether starter available. Our dear friends (Cii> fans) have told us! The old days have gone and left us. In looking over the Johnsburg Tiger lineup we note only one Freun&^At one time they had six or seven Freund boys in there. M Over Johnsburg ; The Johnsburg Tigers saw their record fall to 2-2 for the season, as they lost to Elgin Frontier Lanes, 7-0. The Tigers managed only one hit, a bunt single by Kit Carstens. Altogether, it was a rough night for Johnsburg, as the Elgin pitcher was very sharp. Kit Carstens started for the Tigers and was tagged with the loss. He was plagued by lack of control which led to his, downfall in the 3rd inning. Jin/ Meyers came on and pitched excellent in relief for the remainder of the game. Johnsburg will play at Geitoa tiiis Sunday, and at home on July 4 against Crystal Lake. Game time for both of these contests will be 1:30. The Tigers appreciate all assistance rers In Postal Ri Explorer Post 37, sponsored by St. Peter's Catholic church, Rockford, won the Council trophy in the Postal Rifle Mitch, it was announced byReinholdG. Miller, Scout Executive. The match is sponsored by the Rational Rifle Association and the Boy Scouts of America, and Explorer Scouts all over the nation take part. Teams ale comprised of four members, and all firing is done at 50 feet, shooting 10 shots in each of three positions, prone, kneeling, and standing. TJie rifle team of Post 37, under Charles Reed, Advisor, was second in Region Seven with a score of 1,012. This was only Trophy g was ninth place in the enl$e nation. • \ - J :-'0; Other units participating included two teams from ftfet 145, sponsored by thb Kiwanis Club in Wonder Lake, andha team from Post 125, sponsored by St. John's piurch in BtHvldere, \• Jim Brehman^ of Post 125, was the wira»er\ of a Region Seven trophy, wijth a score of 170. • \ , x;. Hie Postal Rifle Match is-an annual events ahd\,trophies are given for those shooting the highest scores on a national basis, winners on a regional level, and high scores for each council. A • Now comes the Fourth trf July. We have probably mentioned before that the 4th always seemed like the high spot of the summer when we^erekids. Cap guns and firecrackers in thpse days. Accidents and burns tod. „ But, somehow, we always felt ttat summer was going down hill after the big holiday and school opening loomed like a monster, ft meant the time was coming what we had to put on our shoes. Friends continue to ask us if barbers charge us full price for a haircut. One group plans a congressional investigation. With Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bolger* s daughter, Kathy, winning the coveted honor of Governor at Girls State, the thought came out that confusion may result with two "Guvs" in the Bolger family. Just heard that our old Mend, Pastor Lofaitz, has left this earth. We sat beside him at bantfn# tables and always enjoyed his humor. The last time we talked to him was when he phoned to give us a couple of jokes that we could use. So long, old friend, and may there be good fishing 19 there. A number of cheerleaders from McHenry High School returned June 16 from^a week of work and study at the 14th Annual Summer Cheerleading School at Illinois State University. Shown in attendance at the school (from left to right) are Marjie Ruth, Jeannie De- Vries, Diana Evans (top), Paula Parker (bottom), Barb Kober and Lois Hansen, captain. While in competition there, they earned three firsts and an honorable mention. The traditional summer clinics are offered by ISU, at the request of high school officials, in an effort to improve sportsmanship at athletic events as well as to provide the latest instruction in cheerleading techniques. Dr. Eugene Hill, ISU professor of physical education and clinic director, reports that a capacity group of 700 students were registered in advance for each of the three oneweek sessions (June 11-16, June 18-23, and June 25-30). L.R. Herkimer of Dallas, Texas, who provides the instructional staff for the clinics through the National Cheerleaders Association, personally directed some of the classes during the first week. Daily classes and mass demonstrations were held in Horton Field House or in the University High School gymnasium, and a recreational program included opportunities for swimming and a special clinic dinner and program during the week. They bad carnivals, but a merry-go-round was the thriller. Cotton candy was a real treat. Now comes the big American Legion carnival and crowds will throng to see the various forms of amusemeiA. Personally, we liked the bongo games before they were on the gamb- Ui@ list, ft was oik game where you could sit down. . Our White Sox are 5% games to front in the American League race, but contort land a player m the All-Star squad. We doort faHJw if those Sax are all good or bad. Win 5-2 Bsl Crystal Ba - by Ken Laurence - At the beginning of the Baseball season it wasn't quite Imcv7n whether or not the Shamrocks were going to have a team or not. But, imfigr manager Rich Soda, we dug tip ennugji toll players who wanted to play, or would play till the team got enough players, to field a teem. The first few games were played with players who hadn't played tell in up to 8 years and some who never played baseball in their lives. With these players the Shamrocks lost its first three games. But one bright note, they were all close games. They were losses to Johnsburg 4-0, Elgin Noon Hours 6-2, and to Crystal Lake 6-5. But last Sunday with more ball players who didn't know 19 to that time there was a team, we beat the Elgin Crystal Ball by a score of 5-2. Pitching was the story of the gune Sunday, as veteran httrler Ren Mauer teamed ig> with Jack A&ms and scattered 6 hits during the game. Elgin pitcher Walt Yandell went all the way for the losers. He pitched himself a good game, allowing the Shamrocks only 6 hits, but his teammates didn't bade him up, giving up many runs on errors. Next Sunday the Shamrocks play DeKalb, the new entry in the league, who are as of now undefeated. The game is here in McHenry where tve are now playing our home games on the high school varsity diamond. This is located behind the football field, across from the Jr. High school.
