PG. 4, SEC. 1 - PLAiNDEALER - JULY 6, 1967 1 Now, Soccer! Player-Coach Leo Hartog of 4105 E. Wonder Lake Drive advises that a demonstration soccer game was played last Thursday night at Crystal Lake. There are about 40 members from Crystal Lake and 20 from Wonder Lake who have been, playing soccer the past three or four weeks, usually playing on Thursday nights at Harrison School. These players range in age from 17 to 40 years and are anxious to form a County League. Interested? Call Leo Hartog, 653-7176. It does look like soccer is coming along strong in this country. Newspaper reports would indicate that fans are wilder than hockey fans. Referees need a coat of armor. SAFE BOATINGThis is "Safe Boating Week" and special emphasis is being placed on "Care, common sense and courtesy." Boating is a great sport in our area. We hope it is never spoiled by a few. Never saw anything like the way those long lost Cub fans have come out of hiding. The excitement must be enough to make Mr. Wrigley swallow his gum. Sports writers have even quit referring to Durocher as "Lippy." No matter what they call him, Leo has spread some magic over Wrigley Field. When necessity calls for four subs in the lineup at one time and you still win, somebody up there must love you. We are pulling for those Cubs every day. Still hope to see them meet our Sox in the World Series. McMenry Sportsman** Club Porky Pig will be the guest of honor at the McHenry Sportsmen's Club Ham & Bacon Prize Shoot, Sunday July 9th. Every time a little disability keeps us from work for a couple of days, we stop envying men who have retired. It' s later than you think when you see an All-Star baseball team that forgets Willie Mays. It is always amusing to watch a third base coach give signals to batters and base runners. Wonder how often they have to change those signals? Next time we see Chuck Hiller, we are going to ask him about that phase of the game. SPORTS Johnsburg Tigers Win Six .lining Came From Genoa, Pfoy Two Games Next Sunday Sitting in O'Hare Airport the other night, watching all the girls go by, we wondere<f if there isn't a terrible surplus of clothing material in stock piles. . The Johnsburg Tigers defeated Genoa in a rain-shortened, six-inning game by a score of 4-1. Genoa started the scoring with a single run in the second inning. However, Johnsburg bounced back for three runs in their half of the fourth. Jim Meyers led with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Mike De Wolfe then executed a perfect squeeze bunt. It not only scored the runner, but Mike beat it out for a hit. Russ Cox then blasted a triple to left-center field, scoring De- Wolfe. Russ crossed the plate a second later, as Dave Himple- RAIN PREVENTS RACE COMPLETION AT SPEED CENTER Rain, which has lately been as consistent as a point leading driver at many area tracks, came to the Lake Geneva Speed Center both early and late Saturday night and prevented the running of the feature races. Just as the line up for the Total Feature was being announced, sprinkles started that soon turned into a downpour. Rain had fallen earlier but stopped and the time trails and all heat races were run off before the rain started again. In the heats, George Fisher got his first Speed Center victory of the season as Russ Sorensen of Racine kept a cool head and won the second heat while Jim Sullivan and Pete Trapinio were each trying to shake the number one position away from him. Their efforts only netted them a spin out that gave second and third to Pop Kline and Lauren Lawrence. Sarenson then had mechanical trouble and Denny McKay took the lead and the win. Tom Anderson led throughout the third heat with Claude Potter, Bill Bohn and Rodger Otto finishing very close behind. Duane Harris had been up to third in this one and Don Scource, running the wide grove, made a great effort going into each turn to move up and get the lead. At the end he was fifth. The fourth heat was won by Sullivan with Source in second and Otto in for third. All the heats were close and the last two were the "stand up and see the finish", type. Joe Sansone and Jim Deitmeyer won the late model stock car heats. Bill Bohn had fast time in the modifieds and Rick Schuyler had late model honors. The attendance was 2000 in spite of the weather circumstances that had threatened all afternoon. Special events for the month of July will be a ladies Powder Puff Derby on Thursday July 13 and a special Friday night race that will be the Jim Lawrence Memorial Race. This will be on July 21. That week will be racing cm Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Speed Center. Bill Kline of Burlington took the lead at the start followed % Dean Krauze of Clinton and Tom Anderson of Antioch. On the sixth lap Anderson, who took second cm the fourth lap, went around Kline and into the lead. On the 10th lap, Harris was fourth with Schuppel second and Kline between them. On the next lap Harris took second and the chase started in earnest after Anderson. Schuppel overtook him and passed for the lead on the 19th lap with Harris going wide and also following dropping Anderson back to third. Jim Sullivan, who had started , 12th, was now up to fourth and he too got by Anderson on the next lap. On the 25th lap, with only six laps to go, Harris worked his way around the outside and around Schuppel and was never threatened again. Schuppel finished second, then it was Sullivan, „ Johnny Reimer, Anderson, Rodger Otto, Ron Bergsma, Claude Potter, Bill Bohn, and John Keing in the first ten. Bill Bohn of Kenosha had set fast time but had trouble with his car in the feature. He had been up to 8th at one point after starting 18th. Modified stock car heats were won by Chuck Henne of Lake Geneva who also came back and took the win in the semi-feature. Bergsma, Schuppel and Reimer won the other heats. In the late model division, Harvey Dunbar of Delevan, Bob Roper of Chicago and Don Daniels of Paddock Lake were the winners.
