J - PLAIN DEALER - AUGUST 10, 1967 Meet The Governor! *ft lt 1 fTT!^5~ Miss Kathleen Bolger of McHenry is shown at right visiting with Governor Otto Kerner while American Legion Auxiliary Department President Mrs. Louis Unfer looks on. Miss Bolger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bolger of 906 N. Allen avenue, met the two guest speakers when she attended the annual Legion auxiliary convention in the Conrad Hilton hotel, Chicago, recently. Kathy is the 1967 Illini Girls State Governor, elected to that post when she represented the local auxiliary at Jacksonville, 111.,, earlier this summer. Elect Lock To High Vet Post At the Department of Illinois thirteenth annual convention of the Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A., held in Ottawa Aug. 3 through the 6, Harry C. Lock of 5119 West Maple Hill drive was elected to the office of junior vicecommander of the Department of Illinois. Prior to the Ottawa convention, Mr. Lock had held several offices in both the locaf McHenry Barracks, No. 1315, and in the Ninth district of the World War I veterans organization, culminating by serving as commander of the Ninth district during 1966 and 1967. The Ottawa convention elected Harold Marritt of Spring- ' field as commander for 1967- ; 1968, and Sherman S. Carr of Murphysbaro as senior vicecommander of this veterans' organization. Mr. Lock was enthusiastically supported in this, his first attempt to occupy an office at the state level, primarily because of his strong backing of a Congressional measure (H.R. 1993) that would enable veterans of World War I to receive the same veterans' pensions as awarded to the Spanish War veterans nearly seventy years ago; and also Us support of a real estate tax relief for all persons over 65 years of age. TIRED INTRUDERS Intruders who apparently were seeking a place to sleep caused damage to the home of Mrs. Walter J. Martensen of Chicago and Lilymoor, who reported the incident to sheriffs police Sunday. Deputies found a hole in the living room ceiling of the summer residence and a note which read, "Sorry for the mess," adding that they needed a place to sleep. Investigation revealed that the transom window above a porch had been entered and the intruders went into an attic, from where they fell through the ceiling. Hie investigation continues. Fair Straw Poll Shows GOP Leaders For Public Office If those who voted in the straw poll at the Republican booth at this year's McHenry County Fair elected officials, Nixon would be our next President. Percy was choosen for the vice-presidency, while Ogilvie beat all coiners for Governor. Over 1,000 votes were cast over the four-day period. Of these, the vast majority were onct of those who will be able to vote next year. Nixon led the pack for President with 31 percent of the ballots cast. Percy was second with 24 percent, while Romney got 16 percent and Reagan 14 percent. The rest of the ballots named various other, candidates, but none received more than these four. For Vice-President, Percy topped all of the others with 21 percent of the vote. Romney was second with 16 percent, and both Reagan and Nixon got 13 percent. Dirk sen, Brooke and Lindsay received from 11 percent to 6 percent apiece. Perhaps the most significant result of the political preference poll was that one of the two most mentioned Republican candidates for Governor outpolled the other by almost four to one. President of the Cook County board, Richard Ogilvie, received 26 percent of the ballots, while his supposedly "chief' opponent, John Henry Altorfer, had only 7 percent. Percy came in second for Governor with 21 percent, while the present Democrat incumbent received only 16 percent. William Scott received 14 percent. While the results are by not necessarily a true reflection of the feelings of McHenry coun- ' ty citizens, the sample includes about 3 percent of those who can be expected to vote in the general election next year. No names were printed on the ballots to limit the voters' choices. McHenry Ladies Collect Items For Vietnam Veterans Two McHenry ladies are determined to have their home city represented in efforts to make the next holiday season happier for servicemen in Vietnam. Mrs. Thomas DeCarlo of 3102 W. Victoria and Mrs. George Brda of 3106 Crescent drive, both in the Country Club subdivision, have undertaken a program of collecting items that would be welcomed by GPs away from home. Spurred on by a radio station announcement that trucks would be sent out to pick up gift items collected in sufficient quantity, the two women are asking support of those who wish to be a part of this worthwhile program. They hope to let service personnel know that their contribution is appreciated by the many folks at home. Such items as stationary, canned goods, hard candy, gum, tooth paste and brushes, etc., will be welcomed and may be left at the or Mrs. Brda before Aug. 26. Also, boxes mil be set 15) in the business districts. The radio station has arranged to have gifts packaged and sent to Vietnam in time for the holiday. Alex Clark of 2506 W. River- Side drive, McHenry, who was walking along the road shortly after 4 o'clock in the afternoon. In a special census in 1956, the figure increased to 2,748. In 1960 there was a growth to 3,336.
