The measure (H.R. 11679), similar to one introduced in the last session of the Congress, will have a full-dress hearing on Aug. 16 and 17 before a House Judiciary sub- . committee on which this member serves as the ranking Republican. Changing our national holidays to convenient Mondays is intended to provide our citizens with six three-day holiday weekends. These six new holidays and their present counterparts are as follows: 0) Presidents' Day (third Monday in February), instead of Washington's Birthday (Feb. 22nd). (2) Memorial Day (last Monday in May), instead of May 30. (3) Independence Day (first Monday in July), instead of July 4. (4) Labor Day (first Monday in SeptemberV-no change. (5) Veterans' Day (last Monday in October), instead of Nov. U. (6) Thanksgiving Day (fourth Monday in November), instead of fourth Thursday in November. Much of the sentimental and historic interest in retaining our present schedule of holidays vanishes when it is noted that (a) George Washington actually was born (Hi Feb. 11th (the Gregorian calendar, adopted some years later, advanced the date to Feb. 22); (b) Memorial Day has been celebrated on April 25, 26 and June 9 (as well as May 30); (c) the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 2; and the parchment copy was signed by fifty of the fifly-six signers Mrs. William Adams of Aus- »tin, Minn.* were here to attend the funeral .of Joseph J. Miller last Saturday. Gas water heaters sense. Because modern gas water heaters--with their greater recovery capacity--are designed to keep up with your growing family needs. (A mighty comforting thought if you're last in line for a hot bath!) Because gas water heaters give you peace of mind. They're solidly built and backed by long-term guarantees. For more reasons why gas water heaters make sense, call or visit our nearest store or office, or see your plumber-dealer. Because gas water heaters are so economical to operate. (Keep your family in towels with the money you save!) on July 19. Also, there are valid and logical reasons for designating appropriate Mondays for observance of the other holidays. But the overwhelming support for uniform Monday holidays is to enable families to enjoy six three-day vacations throughout the year, with all the educational, cultural and recreational values that will result. In a recent survey conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 85 percent of those who responded were in favor of this change. Only 14 percent were opposed, with- 1 percent expressing no opinion. In the poll recently completed of 12th district residents (Lake and McHenry counties and Barrington and Hanover township, in Cook county), the vote was better than two-to-one in favor of observing Memorial Day and Independence Day on Mondays. Other recent polls have confirmed this favorable support for the change. The most frequently voiced objection to uniform Monday holidays is that many more traffic deaths would occur on such long weekends. However, statistics of the National Safety council. reveal that the danger rate on single mid-week holidays is substantially higher than on any single day of a threeday holiday weekend. Management officials look to better production and less absenteeism if the Monday holiday plan is adopted. Most employees favor the prospect of three-day vacations with their families. Those engaged in resort and travel businesses are so excited about increased business prospects that they are quite exuberant in their support of the measure. Canada has observed the Queen* s birthday for many years on the Monday nearest May 24. Thanksgiving Day in Canada is also celebrated on the second Monday in October. The Canadians are enthusiastic in their support of the arrangement. England, New Zealand and some other countries have adopted the uniform Monday holiday plan with corresponding approval. Those who appear to be most worried aboutthepending legislation are the calendar manufacturers. They want to receive News About Our Servicemen Geoffrey F. Walkington, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn F.
