Indian Guide Program Of YMCA Will Be Outlined The Lake Region YMCA announces that special arrangements have been made to acquaint boys who are in the first ^ and second grade, and their dads, with the YMCA Indian Gujdes program. Presentation df . information about the activity is scheduled for evening j meetings in various schools in the service area, beginning on Monday evening, Sept. 25, and concluding on Thursday, Sept. 28. Boys in these schools will, receive some information and an invitation to take home before the date of the meeting. The purpose of the Indian Guides program is to foster the companionship of fathers and sons. The success of the program is the ingredient of joint participation by both fathers and sons. Activities are arranged to set goals that boys can attain and that dads can share. The program aims to have sons and dads understand each other and enjoy activities that they can experience together. American Indian culture is used as the structure for the program, and it captivates the imagination of every child. Fathers and sons are organized into groups of not less than five pairs, not more than nine pairs, called tribes. Tribes meet monthly on a rotating basis in the "teepees" of the little braves and big braves. A typical meeting begins at at 7:15 pan. and consists of opening ritual, wampum collection, tallykeeper's report, a chance to earn feathers, a short business meeting, little brave's report, Indian story, game or song, projects, refreshments, and a closing ceremony. Since little braves need a good night's rest, the meeting is usually over by 8:30 p.m. FEATHER AWARDS Achievement is recognized with the awards of feathers, which are worn in the headbands of the big and little braves. Fathers and sons merit the colorful feathers by learning and earning together. Sons' experience a sense of achievement, increasing mental and moral development and the elimination of self-consciousness while they work, as a team, each benefiting from their companionship and combined knowledge. During the year several special events, such as weekend campouts, father and son banquet, kite flying contests, fish derbys, and chiefs workshops are conducted to bring many of the tribes together. Another regular feature is the newsletter, called Smoke Signals, which is sent to every member and contains news of tribes, games, songs, stories, projects for tribal meetings, and special events announcements. The Lake Region YMCA presently has eleven tribes meeting regularly and hopes to find the interest to organize additional tribes and to fill vacancies in those existing ones where youngsters have outgrown the program. PROGRAM VARIETY The meetings planned will begin promptly at 7:15 p.m. and be finished at 8:15 p.m. Representatives of the " Y" and of the Indian Guide Longhouse, along with as many little braves and big braves as possible will be there to present details of the program and show examples of the variety of activities and projects included.
