Scientists say the largest numhir of individual objects the human mind can visualize as a unit isthree. Try it yourself! Hold up three fingers -- think about what you see. Now put up a fourth finger. Do you see four? Or do you see three fingers plus one? Or two plus two? Or one plus two plus one? In this country, we're usedto hearing and thinking in term? of thousands, millions and even billions. But you can't really visualize these figures, although you can get some idea of their size when you relate them- to something with which yo»j are familiar. Let's take some large figures published by the National Safety council, and put them in perspective. •Here's the first one: 1966. That's easy -- lastyear! Here's a harder one: 53,000. That's just about the population of a small city like Janesville, Wis, or Berwyn, 111. It's also the number of people who were killed in automobile accidents last year. While we're on the subject of people, here's another num ber: 1,900,000. That's pretty close to the total population of Philadelphia, Pa. Disabling injuries were sustained by that many people on the roads in 1966. Now line up five cars owned by you and some of your friends. According to the "law of averages", one of them will be damaged in an accident this year, because it happened to about 22 million of the 96,- 100,000 vehicles registered in the U.S. last year. (Incidentally, if all the motor vehicles in this country were lined up bumpe r -to-bumper on a singlelane highway, that line would circle this planet about 17% times. Imagine all of them waiting for one train to pass at a crossing!) How much did all these accidents cost? About ten billion dollars, according to the National Safety council. Big deal, you say? How much is that? Pretty close to the total income of all the families that live in Chicago. Now that you're able to visualize all these big figures, how about taking a look at old number one. You. How haveyour driving habits been lately? RICE TIME .. . Platoon Sergeant James R. Myers, bending, and Specialist 4 Eldon R. Jones distribute rice to Montagnards in their v i l l a g e a l o n g Highway QL-1 near Dong Ba Thin, \ Vietnam. The Dutch cavalry captured the French navy in January of 1795 after entire fleet became frozen in the ice, and the horsemen could safely surround the ships.
