Plan 60th Anniversary The Drivers Seat Is there anything simpler in driving a car than keeping it on the road? A total of 14,700 people found out in i jl962 that it isn't as simple as they thought. They were killed when their cars ran off the road. J. Stannard Baker, director of research at the Traffic institute of Northwestern university, estimates that as many as 5 per cent of all motor vehicle fatalities result from suicidal or homicidal acts. Aside from these causes, though, there are others such as high speed inattention and drowsiness, and drinking. Also high on the list of causes for running-off-the-road accidents is darkness. Invisible signs and indistinct road edges are the consequences of darkness. A majority of the runningoff- the-road accidents happen on rural highways, mostly at night. It's financially impossible to trim the millions of miles of rural highways in the United States in lights. But, it's not impossible to mark road edges with reflective stripes, especially helpful at night on winding roads. Many states have found that reflective materials, including reflective highway signs, reduce accidents. A study by the Michigan Highway Department found that reflective delineators on two rural routes reduced the OCTo 18, 1967- PLA1NDEALER- SEC. 1, PG. 5 night accident rate as much as 39 per cent.
