But when he gets out into private practice, he will find that colored pills and especially hypodermic shots are what impress the patients. In fact, the current penicillin shots are the hocus-pocus of the modern medical officu! Read this case with double care! For I >am not exaggerating. By - George W. Crane, Ph., D., M.D. CASE D-576: MaxT., aged22, is a medical student. "Dr. Crane, " he inquired thoughtfully, "how did the ancient physicians retain the confidence of their patients? "For they didn't have any knowledge of germs nor did they possess our modern antibiotics and other miracle drugs. '•Nor could they perform aseptic surgery. ' Yet they seem to have flourished and to have enjoyed great respect, n^t only among laymen but even among royalty," PSYCHIATRIC MEDICINE Those ancient physicians were basically versatile psychiatrists! They used all sorts of weird concoctions, such as snake rattles, spider webs, and even dried dung of alligators. There's just no stopping you. Front St., McHenry, 385-0882 And those drugs produced miraculous cures., I'or if usually isn't the medicine, even in modern times, but the belief in the doctor that does the job! " To be specific, 50 percent of the .20.09'J,000 medical patients which we physicians see each week in our offices have no diagnosable physical ailments whatsoever! 0 And among the 50 percent who do 'iave some organic troub'e, most of them will get well, even in spite of their doctors! As long as the patient reposes unlimited faith in his physician and the latter uses some tangible "fetish" on which the patient can fasten his belief, then 85 percent of the patients will recover, regardless of whether they get shots of penicillin or merely colored water. "Dr. Crane," you may protest in amazement, "aren't you afraid that such statements will eliminate most of the medical patients?" No, indeed, for the average American is so chicken about his health that most of our television programs are financed in large part by various brands of aspirin and other tonics! Since I am both a physician as W'ill as former professor of "Sales and Advertising Psychology," I am forced to admire the superb advertising techniques of patent m?dicine vendors. And I don't resent them the way most medics do, for I also realize that the drugs we official members of the American Medical association em ploy are largely^ to allay the patient's fears and build up his confidence. We do have a few drugs that actually render a vital service. They include digitalis, morphine, insulin and antibiotics. But even the antibiotics have b?come the hocus-pocus of the modern scientific medic; For examole, you laymen by the millions rush to the doctor's office at the first sign of flu. And what do you demand? A shot of penicillin! Yet penicillin does NOT affect the virus of flu! So that shot is chiefly to justify oar office fee and allay your mind! You'd generally get well just as fast if the physician injected normal saline water, if you just belie\cd it was penicillin! These are terse but shocking facts that 1 am revealing, because m.-tr\\ cities are being hounded for more and bigger hospitals. Actually, half the patients nowadays in American hospitals should be a"home, instead of occupying $50-a-day beds, often at taxpayer's expense!
