,y s-'-7s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony OCT. 20, 1967 - PLAINDEALER - SEC. 1, PG. 5 SAFEGUARO YOUR HEALTH A PUBLIC SERVICE OF THE ILLINOIS STATE MEDICAL SOCIETY Mayor Donald P. Doherty, at left, is shown Thursday morning cutting ribbon which officially marked the grand opening at A1 Mapes, manager of Spurgeo. is new store in the Mc- Henry Market place on Rt. 120, said on Thursday that he was very gratified with the enthusiastic acceptance of the new store by the people of McHenry and surrounding communities. Mr. Mapes added that the company will constantly strive to offer the best in values and service. The local store is the sixtieth in the chain which covers four mid-western states. The Spurgeon company was founded sixty years ago by H.F. Spurgeon in the small Iowa town of Afton, where he ran a typical general store of that era, complete with cracker barrel, peanuts in the shell, buggy whips, etc. Basing his business on the practice of fair play and honest values, the business has grown over the past sixty years to a chain of sixty modern junior department stores. The company maintains two buying^offices in Chicago and New York to bring the newest merchandise to the stores as quickly as it is introduced. P.W. Hayes, president of Spurgeon, and executives from the home office in Chicago were in McHenry on Wednesday for a dinner meeting before the opening of the new store. RESIDENCE CHANGE Leonard Wright, who was sentenced last week to Vandalia, was listed by the court as a resident of 3706 W„ Ann street, McHenry. This is a former address of Wright, who has moved since his arrest. the new Spurgeon store in tho McHenry Market Place. Looking on are A1 Mapes, store manager, and several cashiers. NOISE CAN TRIGGER HEALTH PROBLEMS Did you know the sound of music can damage your ear? Even the -sound of a dripping faucet can bring on a Headache. Studies of noise and its effect on health show that noises ranging from a faint ticking of a clock to three solid hours of listening to rock and roll music can trigger emotional and physical health problems. The noise doesn't necessarily have to be loud. It merely has to be offensive to the listener. For. example: A snoring husband keeps his wife awake most of the night. Lack of sleep makes her rundown and she catches colds easily. You tense up every time your son grits his teeth. Reactions traced to noise listed by a University of Texas medical expert included ulcer flare ups, headache, upset stomach, allergic reaction and nervousness. Loud noises are increasing in our everyday life, the study reported, in proportion to the increase in industrialization and the advent of more and more mechanical home devices. What pediatrician has not heard a mother tell him that a baby was scared of a vacuum cleaner? The pain threshold for noise is about 130 decibels ( a unit used to note degree of loudness), and many modern kitchens are equipped with devices such as garbage disposal, dishwasher, etc., which can produce noise in the 100 decibel range. A loud television set or record player can also reach this level. In another study, two San Francisco ear doctors found the prolonged listening to rock and roll music can lead to ear damage and/or hearing impairment. Is it a hopeless task to deal with noise in a world of jets, factory machinery, and an increasing population? Not at all. But, like charity, noice control begins in the home. The first step is to teach children, by example, a respect for the rights of others. Maybe your daughter can do her homework with a record player blaring, but your son needs quiet to concentrate. Youngsters have to run and yell to release energy, but they can quiet down when Gramma is napping. Everyone in the family should be assured some period of solitude each day as well as noisier times of companionship. If a particular sound is especially annoying to anyone in the family and it can be controlled, exercise the golden rule. LEARNING PROBLEMS Causes and symptoms of learning problems will be the topic of discussion at the joint meeting of the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children and the Association for Childhood Education to be held at the Timbers restaurant in Woodstock on Monday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. The theory of motor-mental correlation will be presented by Willard Footlik, administrative director, and Mrs. Janice ScKnobrich, program director of the Reading Research Foundation of Chicago. The evening will begin at 6:30 with a buffet dinner and the program following at 8 p.m. City Arrests The following arrests were made by McHenry police from Oct. 9 to Oct. 15: Joan V.
