Green McHenry 385-4500 REMEMBER BY THE OLD TIMER £ From Mrs. Floyd Booker, Sonora, Kentucky: I don't suppose you would call me an Old Timer, but I am a grandmother several times. I remember so many things about my childhood that it's hard to choose what stands out the most in my mind. I attended the one-room a large coal stove in the middle of tthhee room. Water was carried from a spring a mile away. We had spelling bees and arithmetic matches on Friday afternoons. I remember my father's country store. Everything came in bulk form and had to be weighed for sale. Customers brought in eggs, chickens, wool, sorghum, all kinds of roots, walnuts and furs to sell or trade for groceries. The kerosene barrel was a necessity as everyone used kerosene for their lamps. I can remember going to my grandmother's at Thanksgiving and Christmas on a sled when snow was too deep to travel by automobile. Water was carried from a cave in buckets, for drinking and for cooking. It was the coldest -- and best -- water I,,, have ever tasted.
