How can I protect my brass doorknobs, escutcheon plates, and other such ornamental hardware from corrosion and pitting? A. By periodically rubbing a thin layer of paste wax. Clean thoroughly with metal polish or scouring powder first, then rub on the wax, and buff vigorously when dry. Renew once or twice a year to insure continuing protection. Q. Is there something I can improvise in my. cook&*y when someone in my household is not supposed to eat butter? A. Try using juice from a fresh lemon, instead of butter. Fresh lemon juice squeezed oh fish, chicken or baked potato is truly delicious. Q. How can I remedy a scorched pan? A. Before attempting to wash it, soak overnight in slightly diluted household bleach. Your cleaning will then be comparatively easy. Q. What can I do about fingernail polish that has been spilled on waxed wood floor or tile? A. Best to let it solidify before doing anything. When the polish is barely solid and pliable, it can be peeled right off. Smears usually result when attempts are made to wipe up the polish before it has dried, or by using a solvent on completely hardened polish. Q. How can I drill a hole in glass? A. Use a regular steel drill, and keep the point of contact saturated with camphorated oil or turpentine or mineral spirits. Don't exert too much pressure-- let the drill do the work! Q. There are some white patches on my asphalt tile floor where alcohol was spilled. How can I remove these? A. By rubbing a little baby oil or olive oil into them. Q. How can I remove the lime deposits that have collected around my faucets? A. By rubbing with a clean cloth sprinkled with a few drops of vinegar. This treatment is also good for removing water spots from stainless steel sinks. Many other such tips are included in my new household manual. Q. What can I do about rust marks on my stainless steel sink? A. You can eliminate these very easily by rubbing with lighter fluid. After the rust disappears, go over the sink with your kitchen cleanser, and it will be as bright and shining as when new. , Q., How can I increase the efficiency of my carpet sweeper? A. By dampening the brushes of the sweeper slightly just before using it, they will do a much better job of picking up lint, dust, and the like. Q. How can I, when hand sewing with double thread, prevent the thread from tangling? A. You can go a long way towards preventing such tangling if you' 11 knot the ends separately instead of together. Q. How can I, when buying dark corduroy, test its colorfastness? A. By rubbing over its surface with a white handkerchief. Q. How can I remove some burnt spots on granite? A. By covering the spots with a teaspoonful of baking soda mixed to a paste with a little water, then heating it. Never scrape it with a knife. Q. What is a good way to clean or wash clear-plastic water glasses? A. Wash them in cream of tartar dissolved in hot water. Soak for a few minutes, then rinse, and dry. WOMEN VOTER LEAGUE URGES GOVERNOR TO ACT ON POLLUTION SINGERS . . . Vietnamese singers perform for U. S. Naval Mobile Construction force in Bon Sinh Province. The singers travel South Vietnam encouraging their people to fight communism. Mrs. Pearl Miyashiro, president of the Woodstock-McHenry League of Women Voters, announced that the following letter has been sent to Gov. Otto Kerner from the League of Women Voters of Illinois: "Dear Governer Kerner: " The League of Women Voters of Illinois urges you to . request that the Secretary of the »Interior convene a Federal Enforcement conference on the problems of Lake Michigan pollution to include the states of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan. It seems inconsistent to us to consider lake pollution problems only in the present context of Illinois and Indiana when the waters of our Illinois area are contaminated by discharges from both Wisconsin and Indiana and each state is affected by discharges from its neighbors. Ip addition to indystrial and domestic pollution from individual states, we are confronted by increased eutrophication due to the alewife problem, hardly the responsibility of any one state. WHICH WAY DID IT GO? More exact measurements of the rate at which water travels in Illinois streams will be possible as the result of dye-tracer studies conducted this summer, William C. Ackermann, chief of the Illinois State Water Survey, reports. Time - of - travel measurements have become increasingly important in the study and control of water quality in streams, Ackermann said. Tracer studies conducted by the survey make use of a harmless red dye which is measured by its fluorescence and is usually not detectable to the eye. Carefully measured doses of the dye are placed in a stream, and the arrived of the dye is recorded at selected locations downstream. '••••••••••••••••••* Musin' & Meanderin (Continued from page 1) has escaped the experience of being told at some time that "There's nothing in the paper." In the case of large metropolitan dailies, they can only answer that the world situations have taken on a quiet note temporarily. Where weeklies or semiweeklies are the target, our answer is this: "Did you bother to notify the paper about something you felt had sufficient importance to appear in print?" Have you wondered why the , other fellow's name is mentioned more frequently than yours? Maybe it's because he took the time and trouble to jot down a few notes that made an interesting story either about himself or one of his organizations. The next time you feel you would like to read something more interesting in the paper, remember that you -- the reader-- and your activities make the most interesting reading at all!
