Section On®--Pago Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, February 10# 1966* 0 I HEAR... Ry: Earl Wj^A It was a happy crowd of jMCHS' basketball fans leaving the home gym last .Friday night after the Warriors beat the Zion-Benton five 82-75. Victories have been as scarce as hen's teeth this season so the loyal crowd could be excused for a little extra jubilation. Coach Anderson and his boys gave it all they had and kept jpfng strong alT the way. We thought Rich Soda played one of the best games of his high school career, not only because he scored a lot of points. He followed that ball like a hawk all night Zion had three big men who made it look at the outset that the Warriors were in for a hard time under the boards. And it looked like McHenry's man-to-man defense was lacking. As it turned out, the Zion defense fell apart. At one point Soda drove straight down the middle for a basket and could have taken a truck through with him. When Tom Evans .went to the bench early in - the game our hopes sagged. However, the boys who came" off the bench did a pleasing job. Reinboldt was hampered with early fouls, but gave it a hard try as usual. Pat Camasta, always eager to give his best, handled the ball just dandy. Phil Schimke went strong and was obviously tired when it came time for a rest. He has a soft shot and should improve each game. Paul Kilday wasrat his best in the late stages, feeding the ball. to his mates with good passes. Lossman did not see much action, but was right in the game; Cars tens was the boy who got hot on shots in the last period to put it away. He couldn't miss. Yep. The Warriors played basketball in this game and deserved to win. This is a team lacking the experience of many opponents, but there is nothing missing in 'their willingness to work. Next comes a trip to tubertyville on Friday night of this week. The season is getting shorter. Remaining games are: Feb. 18 -- Dundee here Feb. 25 -- McHenry at Barrington Then comes the whirl of tournaments. If you want to shake the hand that shook the hand of Pat O'Brien, see Mary Etten. "Mary The Mick"1 says she suddenly went speechless when she met Pat last week at the Drury Lane theater, where Pat and his wife, Eloise, are starring. The Ettens were celebrating their 36th (Oh, it can't be!) wedding anniversary so their "kids" took them to the play. Mary didn't want to wash her hand after shaking the hand of Pat O'Brien. Some go for the Beatles, some for the O'Briens! GOOD WEEKE ND FOR WARRIOR TEAMS SODA, SCHIMKE. CARSTENS LEAD WARRIORS 10 IMPRESSIVE 82-75 VICTORY OVER ZION BENTON SPOUTS* Warrior Cheerleaders Phil Schimke played one of his finer games against Zion. He, Rich Soda, and Kit Carstens, led the team to its second conference win. Coach Glen Anderson told me last Friday that he and his team were going to give me something to write about this week. And sure enough they did -- our Warriors upset Zion by scoring an impressive 82 points against 75 for the losers. The McHenry quintet hit well from the field throughout the game but even more important, they got their share of rebounds and held the turnovers to a minimum .This victory, their second in conference play, sets the mood for our club as they travel to Libertyville this Friday. It will take a lot of doing, yet one of the Warrior victories was against first place North Chicago, so here's hoping that Mc-' Henry can score a victory against the second place • Libertyville squad. Zion Gets Early Lead Z i o n l e d t h e W a r r i o r s through most of the first half. Craig Hiatt and Dave Petreman led Zion to a 20 - 15 first quarter lead. The Warriors were playing well during this time but didn't really j611. The scoring for our club was divided among Kilday, Evans Schimke, Carstens, and Reinboldt. Schimke, Soda Start Scoring McHenry outscored Zion by a point in the second stanza. Phil Schimke, Warrior center came alive with 8 big poipts during the period. Rich Soda also began hitting and contributed 6; If Keith Rowan hadn't been playing during this period, Zion would have fallen far behind. Rowan dropped in 13 to keep Zion ahead. The half ended with Zion leading 43 - 39. Warriors Explode ' Hungry for a victory, the Warriors all but ran Zion off the court in the third stanza. McHenry hit the nets for 22 points while Zion had to settle for 12., This gave McHenry a 61 - 55 lead going into the last period. Big gun for McHenry in the third period was Rich Soda. Rich sank half of McHenry's points. With three field goals and five charity tosses Rich made 11 points. Carstens Gets Hot Zion was again outscored by McHenry in the final period. Kit Carstens caught the fancy of the fans as he single handidly kept our team in front. Kit sank six field goals from 10 - 15 feet in quick succession and seemed to break the Zion spirit. Zion didn't cover Kit and he hurt them. When they finally started to cover him the damage was done and McHenry was on their way to a long desired win. ^ The Warriors travel to Libertyville this Friday. The next home game is Feb. 25 "against Dundee. WRESTLERS CAPTURE IHIRD PLACE IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT, PERRINO AND LAURSEN CHAMPS Had a card from Henry Bennett, who is now in Juno., Florida, and is a Plaindealer reader. Henry caught our note about no cards from the sunny south so he sent one with a snappy looking chick feeding the performing porpoises. Says Henry "The weather here is nice and warm as you can see by this girl." The old rascal! Saw Coach Glen Anderson at the grade school basketball tournament Tuesday ijight looking over future prospects for his varsity squad. Jerry Fain wa there, too. He gets 'em first. Long ago we told of reading a story of how the English brough the sparrdws to this country. In recenf years they sent us the Beatles. Now they have sent the Animals. Again we say those English are always doing something for us. PICKUPS < Happiness is like potato salad. Share it with other^> and you have a picnic. It is more important to know where you are going, than to see how fast you can get there. He who receives a benefit should never forget it. He who bestows should never remember it. Do not wish to be anything but what you are and try to be that perfectly. Thou hast given so much to us Lord give one thing more, a grateful heart. North Chicago, the pre-tournament favorite >von by a big margin. Libertyville placed second and the Warriors placed' a close third. Warriors Have Two Champs McHenry had two conference champions. Carl Ferrino beat Evans of North Chicago tor the 133 lb. title. The match was close - a 3-3 tie-and ferrino won on a referee's decision. Carl is a junior and a bright spot for the future. Jim Laursen, a muscular sophomore, won the 165 championship with a win on default. Jim also makes the Warrior's Wrestling squad a bright spot in our future athletic program. Second Place McHenry had one second place - this going to Senior Dave Weikel. Dave lost the 154 lb. title to North of Crystal Lake. Coach Hutchinson stated that Dave wa sa pleasant surprise in the tournament and that he thought Weikel did a fine job. c Third Place Jim Zvonar took a third place. Wrestling at 112 IDs.,1 Jim beat Villabobus of Zion 8-3 for third place position. Jim is one of the three seniors on the squad that McHenry will surely miss next year. Ken Schuerr, junior 185 lbs., took fourth. He lost a decision to Pohlman of Barrington. Heavyweight Tom Dougherty also took third place. Tom is a junior and as he improves should be tough next year. Tom squeeked out a 2 - 0 decision over Brahe of Libertyville. Fourth Place Terry Morrison, McHenry 95 lbs., took fourth place in the tournament. Morrison lost a 3-1 decision to Choy of North Chicago. Sam Lamont took fourth place. Lamont lost to Jacobs of Barrington by a 6-1 score. Mike Sobacki was another fourth place finisher for the Warriors . Mike took fourth place at the 138 lb. division after losing to McCarthy of Dundee. The Warriors made a good showing. All but three of the team members will be back next year. With more experience under their belts, they should be an exciting squad to watch in action. They will be selected by President Earl Paddock on Thurs. night. Selection will be based on scores compiled at the shoot-off held at an indoor range during the last 2 weeks. They will compete against the Windy City Bowmen at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13th. Last Sunday Vice President Lyle Trumble and wife Irene hosted the club to a wonderful day of pheasant shooting at Shagbark Hunt Club, in Alden, III. The archers proved to be quite good at getting the bird on the wing, with Earl Paddock getting the day's best shot and Joe Giliberto taking home a nice Mallard. In all, 10 archers went home with birds, and 11 of the archers went home with memories of a day of perfect hunting, with good weather, good companionship and good sport. Les Adams and Joe Raven braved the below zero weather Jan. 30th and attended Fox Valley's Alaskan Trail Shoot. Congratulations to Les for capturing the 1st place Trophy. Win 18th n lew, Defeat Wayside 45-44 With the Irish going after their 18th victory it looked bad after the first ftiinute of play as they fell behind 8 -2. Even though they played like champions they were losing at the end of the first quarter 19 - 11. This is the first time all year that the team was behind the first quarter. Coming out with that never say die spirit^ in the second quarter and not standing for the taste of defeat, they battled to within striking distance. At the end of the first half they trailed 26 -24. In the third quarter the Irish really roared back. They made the first two baskets of the period and ended the stanza with a 3T - 32 lead. Having the lead in the final quarter they played hard not to be defeated by a strong Wayside five. With the score changing hands seven times in the last quarter the Irish found themselves at a one point deficit with fifteen seconds to go. During this period there were three jump balls. On the last jump, Elliot tipped the ball to Ringelstetter and he scored the final basket. Wayside did not have time to get the ball over mid-court and the Irish won their 18th consecutive game 45- 44.' The season looks good for St. Pat's with only three conference games IeTf and in first place by two full games. ST. Blades Suffer ~-;: Firsf Loss 5-4 c:: The McHenry Blades' streak: of 9 straight games without an ^ loss was halted Sunday night' with a 5-4 loss to the Aurora... Aces. After Gianotti's score, the Aces netted their first score to make • it a 3-1 game. McHenry's ' Blades increased their lead to 4-1 when Frank Lobaza scored - unassisted. The final period was disaster for the undefeated Blades. " Playing with only 11 of their,,,, •'.sual 17 players, McHenry -» looked and played like a tired, weary squad.
