(PLAINDEALER PHOTO) .y\ SPORTS SO I HE E. We are sincerely interested in local athletes who have left the shores of the Fox for higher education. Of course, we are interested in all young people, but our job on Ye Olde Plaindealer is to put-together a sports page so there in lies our special interest in athletes. Many schools have us mi their mailing list. It would be nice to have others do the same. Our "ATHLETES AWAY" feature is one that tells us where our young people are located and how the ball is bouncing for them. We want to hear about both MCHS and Marian Central athletes. As usual, the first Christinas card sent to our house was from Loren Thomas. He never forgets. For some of you younger readers, Loren was a pint size football player for Mc- Henry back in the days of Coach Reed. When there was action in the middle ofc the line, "Tommy" was there. By Earl Walsh There seems to be more criticism of our great country these days than constructive ideas for solutions. Television gives too much time to the wrong people. Now we learn that civil disobedience is being organized, ft could wily happen in the UJS.A. They should try that in Russia, ft would be off to Siberia for the organizers. JV. Athletes W. Away S. The years go by. John Cor so is a senior at Ripon College, Wisconsin where he recently received his varsity football letter. John had a fine record at Ripon where Coach John Storzer turns out winners. The pace just got too fast for us the past week and we had to miss some fun events. There was Joe Frett's annual pilgrimage to Belvidere for the "Pitch and Hit" banquet, the basketball game here Friday night, and the party at the Mc- Henry Library on Sunday. We hear from Bill Bolger, President of McHenry Library, that our long time friend, Mrs. Goodell, was able to visit the enlarged library for the first time. We think she should be known as "Miss McHenry Library". She was the spirit and moving force that guided our library through the lean years. Our Warriors gave a good account of themselves last Friday night, but lacked the size to cope with the Tigers. Bert Hagemann says the Warriors may be in better shape against Dundee this week as far as size goes. Chicago Bear fans are up in the clouds this week after viewing Gale Sayers gallop through the California smog last Sunday. Nobody can run through mud like Sayers. Northern Mini Bowmen Newt Northern Illini Bowmen indoor archery season will begin this Wednesday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m. over the sport shop in Crystal Lake, 67 N. Williams St. All are urged to attend to establish their handicap for the later assignment of teams. The 20 yard PA A round will be shot. First Northern Illini Bowman to bag a deer in Illinois is Lee Kiltz of Woodstock. Lee's 55 pound bow sent an arrow through the spine, dropping a spiked buck in McHenry county. Deer bow season is again open in Wisconsin and an NIB Club hunt was planned at Necedah on Dec. 2. Crystal Lake Tigers Triumph 62-55 Over Hustling Warrior Five By Bert Hagemann The Crystal Lake Tigers, behind at 27 point performance fay Harry Shields, handed the Warriors their first loss in North Suburban Conference play this past Friday. The Warriors, playing before a packed house, could not cope with the tenaci- ' ous defense and hot shooting of the lanky Tiger pivotman. Shields poured in 15 points in the first quarter as he led his mates to a 27 point spurt in the first quarter. From there on the Warriors played the hustling Tigers even, but it was to no avail as McHenry couldn't put together a hot streak of their own to match the Crystal Lake point output. Coach Ken Ludwig commented that not only was Shields' performance an exceptional one, but he was particularly impressed with the clinging, hustling man to man defense thrown up by the Tigers. The shorter Warriors were outrebounded once more, 30-28, and the 61% shooting precentage by Crystal Lake in the first half was just too much to overcome. Added to this hot floor marksmanship and board power was a 16 for 17 performance at the charity line by the Tigers. When all these factors are added up, it's a wonder the Warriors stayed as close as they did. The orange and black actually led by a point mid way through the fourth quarter simply through determination and hustle. However, McHenry couldn't keep the momentum as both teams played a cautious, ball control game during the whole second half. The Warriors did get some good shots late in the game, but missed two easy lay-ups while the Tigers were making two similar shots. This clutch shooting by the Tigers was what spelled defeat, and Warrior fouls late in the game only gave the Tigers more opportunity to pad their lead. Hopefully this Warrior hustle, and determination mil pay off soon in a victory. This Friday at Dundee could be the night, see you there. One recent night at McHenry high school, the girls belonging to G.A.A. were cordially invited to attend the annual Daddy-Date Nite with their fathers. All couples arrived at 7:30 and were ready to have a great time. The evening began with a rollicking game of volley ball. It was a pleasure to watch the dads showing off their tremendous sport's ability. After all were exhausted, refreshments were served, and entertainment was provided by some swinging square-dancers.
