(Publish Dec. 8, 13, 15, 1967) FORTY YEARS A&O (Taken from the files of Dec. 8, 1927) A fire which had made considerable headway before it was discovered, broke out in the ice house owned by C. Unti early Sunday morning. Hie house is located in the rear of the McHenry ice cream factory. The prompt work on the part of the firemen got the blaze under control and prevented it from spreading to other buildings. This was the first occasion necessitating the use of the, new fire truck. One of the big events of the winter calendar of the community high %chool took place Wednesday evening at which time the Junior class play entitled, "You and, P' was given at the high school auditorium. This was a three act comedy written by Philip Barry, who was a student at Harvard and the play had had a successful run in New York. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 1942) Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Knights Templar lodge rooms in Chicago for Dr. John Phillip Gibbs, 80, a member of the staff of St. Elizabeth's hospital and until last year a practicing physician in Chicago for 37 years. Dr. Gibbs had been making his home of late with his daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Houck, of Spring Grove. Word was recevied this week of the marriage on Nov. 28 in St. Jerome's church, Chicago, of Miss Jayne Kent and Mr. Hubert G. Liptrt of Chicago. Friends here received word Dec. 9 of the death of Mr. Makofski who died suddenly at his home in Chicago. He had been a summer resident ofMc- Cullom Lake for many years and expected to retire soon and make his permanent home here. An outstanding event in the history of McHenry Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, was the annual installation of officers, Dec. 5, when Mrs. Johanna Thompson, associate grand conductress of the Eastern Star of Illinois, acted as the instal- . ling marshal of McHenry chapter for the evening. About 160 members and invited guests were present to enjoy the evening and witness the installation of Mrs. Valeska Hoppe as worthy matron, George H. Johnson as worthy patron, and the corps of officers for the ensuing year. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson and Miss Maude Granger were guests in the Harry Alexander home in Hebron Sunday when the latter celebrated their silver wedding annlver- , sary. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 27, 1957) Since the arrival in McHenry about 1952 of a branch of Science Rf search Associates, the work of this organization which is more or less unique in a community of our size, has been of great interest, to the general public. The local branch at 104 Pearl street is known as the scoring and statistical services center of SRA which is one of the leading educational test publishers in the country. On a year around basis they employ between thirty and forty people and at present while at work on special programs sixty are employed daily. The grand opening of Brady and Kenney Mercury in -Lakemoor is announced for Dec. 5. The new owners are Edmund Brady and Gordon Kinney. McHenry lost one of its best known businessmen in death l^st Friday, Nov. 22, with the passing of Joseph Koenig, a baker on Green street for thirteen years. Two hundred fifty members of the clergy, Knights of Columbus and their guests gathered for dinner and a program honoring the golden jubilee year of the McHenry Council at the McHenry Country club following the pontifical high Mass at St. Mary's church. Mrs. Edward Jelinek has been confined to the McHenry hospital since Friday evening when she suffered injuries in an accident which occurred on Rt, 120 east of McHenry, near the Moose lodge. State Auditor To Speak Here Michael J. Howlett, state Auditor of Public Accounts, will be the guest speaker at the annual Christmas dinner and installation of officers of McHenry county Chapter, Independent Accountants Association of Illinois. The dinner will be Tuesday evening, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. in Coleman's restaurant, on Rt. 14, between Crystal Lake and Woodstock. Dorothy Mathews, chapter secretary, said Howlett would discuss "Economy in Government." , "Auditor Howlett is highly regarded in the accounting profession for all work he has done to strengthen accountability in government," said Miss Mathews. "He has inspired new legislation extending mandatory accounting requirements to all local government bodies which didn't have it already." MACDONALD FORD IN FOX LAKE - * y ... -- .
