Elm Street McHenry, Illinois 815-385-1580 (Pub. Dec. 13, 15, 20, 1967) From The Farm Adviser's Desk The difference between a user and an abuser of electricity in the home could be the difference between life and death. Defective electrical wiring and misuse of electrical equipment costs - in terms of both the number of homes burned and in lives lost. Nearly one of every six dwelling fires last year was caused hy faulty use of electricity. If you answer any of these questions with a "no", then take corrective measures immediately in the interest of safety. Is the right size fuse (15 amps for lighting circuits) in use? Do you use a new fuse, never substitutes, when one blows? Do you make sure wall sockets have no more than the specified number of appliance plugged in? Is your TV antenna installed where it cannot fall across power lines, and is it equipped with a properly grounded lightning arrestor? Do you periodically check appliance to be sure they are in proper operating condition and repair or replace them at the first sign of trouble? Are extension and appliance cords replaced immediately when insulation shows signs of fraying or cracking? Do you see that cords are not placed under rugs or hooked over nails? Do you use extension cords within safe limits of their capacity? The safe limit for the most commonly- used extension cord is 500 watts. If you must use an extension cord to feed one or more appliances drawing more power than this, use a heavy-duty cord to prevent overheating. CONSERVATION TILLAGE SYSTEMS "Conservation tillage" ~ a new term for some soil tillage systems -- provides a way to control soil and water erosion on your farm. When practicing conservation tillage your objective should be to select a tillage system that allows you to produce good yields and to reduce soil losses from wind and water. In contrast, the objective of minimum tillage is to save time and money hy limiting the number of trips across the field, but still maintain quick germination and maximum yields. Tillage systems that provide a loose, absorbent soil zone between the rows will help control water runoff and soil erosion on rolling land. In the row, adequate -- but not too much -- tillage and compaction provide good soil seed contact for quick germination and a high percent of germination. Tillage systems that help prevent water erosion are: --Plow and plant in one or two operations. --Plow and plant in two operations with some secondary tillage. / --Plow/ and plant in tilled strips on'two operations. --Chemically kill the sod and plant in two operations. --Mulch tillage -- leaving crop residues on or near the surface. ^ Fall plowing with a mouldboard plow is not considered a conservation tillage practice because the practice leaves the .soil exposed to wind erosion on level land and to water erosion on rolling land. A rough soil surface covered with crop residues reduces wind velocity at the soil level and traps moving soil particles. Tillage practices that help prevent wind erosion includes these: --Chop or shred the cornstalks and break up the soil with a disk or chisel plow during the fall. --Delay plowing until spring and use normal minimum - Tillage practices. --Fall plow and seed a cover crop early enough to get a good fall growth. You may seed spring oats, wheat, rye or barley, but spring oats will winterkill. McHenry County is one of sixty-nine Illinois counties offering the Agricultural Conservation program "conservation tillage" practice to demonstrate the system on a limited number of farms.
