PG. 4, - PLA1NDEALER - DECEMBER 13, 1967 Dennis Jackson In Action For Northeastern Oklahoma ¥ Wrestling Warriors-Roll On As Power Blasts Grayslake 33-9 In Undefeated Season DRIVING FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY The ball carrier shown above is Dennis Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Jackson, who had a big season at Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College. Before a crowd of 15,000 fans, Northeastern defeated Lees- McCrae of North Carolina 35-13 in the National Junior College Championship Shrine Bowl game at Savannah, Georgia on Nov. 25. Northeastern's season record is 9 won - 1 lost, the only loss being to Missouri Southern, 20-19. Dennis set a new school record with 53 pass receptions, gaMng 806 yards and scoring 9 touchdowns. That takes a bit of doin'. Your Plaindealer sports department proudly says CONGRATULATIONS. ____ By Bert Hagemann The Wrestling Warriors of McHenry continued their undefeated march this past Tuesday with a smashing, 33-9 victory over Grayslake on the visitors mats. Once again, it was "wrestling power" in the lower and upper weights which spelled victory No. 4 without defeat for the hustling orange and black. Kurt Easton once again led off with a victory, with a decisive 13-0 decision over his opponent, and Guy Hansen won his match by forfeit. Justen got his first pin of the season at 3:13 to give the Warriors Ave more team points, and then Stan Steiner dropped the first Warrior match of the evening, 4-0, Don Voijht got the Warriors back on the track with a 4-0 decision, and Mike Schlieben followed up with his best match of the year to date, pinning his man at 5:14. Tom F\ichs suffered a tough defeat at 138 by a slim 7-6 margin, and Tom Barnwas downed by a 4-2 margin. Tony Wagner, MiVis Antnnicelli, Jim Laursen, and Moose Mueller finished off with four straight impressive victories to end the evening's scoring. This Friday the Warriors will tackle the always tough Warhawks on the North Chicago canvas. This week's matches with Grant and North Chicago will furnish the orange and black with the toughest competition they have faced yet this year. They'll need all the fan support McHenry can give them as they run into two potent opponents in a row. ^ McHenry Community High School Wrestling Box Score McHenry - 33 Grayslake - 9 Weight 95 103 112 120 127 133 138 145 154 165 180 hwt. This, of course, Increases the number of auto accidents. The Governor of Illinois has advocated a program of "Light Up and Live," and these are definite findings that it is producing the desired results. Accident rates have gone down where this program . is practiced thoroughly. But, you say, "What is Light Up and Live?" 6 This means simply that you should turn on your headlights and drive with them on during TSe~~d®ytime . , your low Beam lights. NOT your parking lights, rt's illegal to drive with your parking lights on. One admonition though . . . it is just as blinding to drive into a set Of bright lights in the daytime as it is in the dark. Warriors, 90 to 50 Dundee Cards Crush 'Tis the season to be jolly and 'twas a jolly group of Plaindealer co-workers who joined together last Friday night at McHenry Country club. Nobody missed the deadline in the knife and fork department. The Bill Moores were absent for the first time in years, but they now belong to the Harvard group. We certainly missed the Dick Sagers this year. Dick was injured recently and is unable to go partying. As we recall, he had a bundle of fun last year at the party. We sat between our better half and "Brenda". They praised the Lord, blessed the host and hostess, passed food and gave us conversation. We were livin*! While Foreman John sat there eating with contentment, Ad Man Ken picked at his food while he tried to think up new changes to give us all more work. It was real fine party. Nothing like good fellowship, good food and holiday spirits. By Earl Walsh Hi Lora: That's what we have always said. The Plaindealer should send its sports editor on more trips. Like maybe outside of McHenry county. Since the days of "Mose' ' we have tried to convince the powers that be that this sport page should have direct reports from baseball training camps. The Chicago Tribune does! So we keep on dreaming. Yep. We need a cane. May need a wheel chair before our dream comes true. Come to think about it, we are busy watching that grandson grow. He might not want us to leave. Have a nice Christmas, Lora. And may the sun shine on both sides of the fence every day you are in Florida. From one of the Smith- Hughes girls of Ringwood, now Lora Sprouse, comes this welcome note: "It is just impossible to keep trac k of everybody when (you) I have lived in four little towns. But this year congratulations to grandpa and grandma. I read your column but please go on another trip - the reports are so interesting. If you come to Florida stop in - or better yet Washington. Sincerely, Lora A. Sprouse. Need a cane?" N. Athletes Away S. Greencastle, Ind. (Spl.) -- Former McHenry High School basketball player Tom Evans scored 8 points for DePauw University's freshman team Tuesday, Dec. 5. The McHenry guard hit 3 field goals and two for two free throws in the 94-87 loss to Wabash College's freshmen in Crawfordsville, Ind. It was the opening game for DePauw. Evans is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Evans, Jr., 3716 Waukegan, McHenry. c£SL3®"b Cl'ARDIAN . . . By Bert Hagemann Any resemblance between basketball and what the Warriors played last Friday night at Dundee was purely coincidental. The orange and black were unmercifully buried by a hustling, inspired Dundee quintet. The Cards completely dominated every phase of a basketball game there is to dominate as they turned their blistering fast break offense loose to amass 90 points before the debacle ended. The Warriors seemed listless, spiritless, and lethargic as big Bob Schumacher cleared the boards at both ends of the court and set up the race horse offense for MacKsnzie and Peel to run. The Cards virtually exploded in an unheard ctf 34 point spurt in the third quarter to run McHenry completely out of the gym. It was one of those nights when a whole team goes flat, and this is precisely what happened to McHenry. The Warriors never did get many good shots, and they rspeatedly were forced into errors by a nagging Card defense which allowed no respite. The die of the game was cast in the first quarter as the hapless Warriors managed only one field goal in the entire period. Quarter number two saw the Warriors go four more minutes before they counted their second field goal of the half, and at half time the 37-18 score showed McHenry with a grand total of five field goals in sixteen minutes of action. However, worse was yet to come. In the third quarter, coach John Paul let his charges run wild for 34 tallies to completely bury the inept McHenry five. Regulars played into the fourth quarter before he began clearing his bench, and by this time, McHenry fans were hoping the game would end Li a hurry. A good question to ask is what went wrong? This reporter sees it as a combination of factors. First of all, the Warriors were outhustled 'or the first timo this year. Secondly, the Warriors experienced an evening against a hot team, a.id lastly, the whole Warrior squad wont pancake flat at the same time. up and it Tho sole Add these factors spells defeat in capr consolation of the evening was another sophomore victory. Pride will have a lot to dci with seeing if McHenry can bounce back from this disaster this week on the home wood against the Warhawks, See you there. Coach Bud Grover was pleased with his team's showing against the powerful Green Wave. The following evening St. Edwards held a strong Dundee team to 42 points while posting an eight point win over the North Suburban co-leader. Marian's lack of height is expected to keep the Hurricanes from being a contender in the strong Suburban Catholic League, which contains such perennial powerhouses as Notre Dame Of Niles and Joliet Catholic. Coach Grover is hopeful that the lack of height will be somewhat overcome by desire and hard work. McHenry boys on the Marian varsity include seniors John Anderson, Rich Meyers and Tom Bolger and juniors Gene Hester and Gary Schaefer. Algonquin has sent Tom Brankey and Tony Gumma. Mike Sullivan is from Wonder Lake and Woodstock boys include John and Mark Gallagher, Jim Fogarty and Chuck Leucht. The Marian sophomores defeated St. Edwards 49-34. You can see the other car better with its lights on, espec ially where it's coming at you at an angle or in certain weather conditions when the car blends into the background. At this time of the year the weather is frequently dull and gray. Lights also help with light colored cars. So, on the weekends or major holidays, when you're on the highways during the daytime, turn on your lights so the other fellow can see you. It may save your life. "Light Up and Live!"
