Achievement meeting recently at the Farm Bureau building in Woodstock. The meeting was call'ed to order by last year's president, Carol Curran. Ken Wright gave a welcome to the guests and a special welcome went to Dave Smith, the new assistant extension adviser for agriculture. Terry Knutson gave a project talk on "Dog Care" and Jeanne and Rogfer Wright gave a demonstration on, "Making Brownies". Cheryl Knutson read an interesting article entitled, "What is a Girl?" and Tom Broman read one on, "What is a Boy?" Mrs. L.D. Knutson, assistant leader, made a few comments on the club work from the previous ytear. A candle light ceremony was presented by some of the members. Awards were then given out by leaders, Mr. and Mrs. Wright. Prize money was awarded to the three highest fair-ticket sellers. They were , Roger Wright, first; Carol Curran, second; and Mark Horenberger, third. First year members receiving certificates and pins were Randy Adamson, Tom and Andrea Broman, Cheryl Knutson, Mark Horenberger, Debby and Margie Wardell and Lyle Wright. Third year pins were awarded to Larry and Terry Knutson. Honor certificates were then handed out. Carol Curran received a county and a state project outstanding certificate. Jeanne Wright received a county project outstanding certificate for clothing and Ken Wright received a county project outstanding certificate for small engines. Jeanne Wright also received a pin for the dress review. Comments were made by Dave Smith and his father. The meeting was then adjourned and refreshments were enjoyed by everyone. The club met locally at the 'home of Tom and Andrea Broman. The meeting was called to order by President Jeff Brody. New members are Fern Brody, Jean and Bob Dooley, Greg and Maria Veraschagin and Henry and Steve Vorhees. Each officer gave a report on the class he attended at the county officers' training school. This year a Christmas party is being planned by the leaders. It was suggested that the members take on a project for Christmas this year instead of just bringing money for some charity. We decided to obtain a tree and make ornaments and toys to decorate it. The toys will be given to the children in the children's ward in the hospital, in which we plan to place the tree. The committee appointed for seeing to details are the president, Tom and Andrea Broman, Terry Knutson, Roger and Jeanne Wright. Our leader, Mrs. Wright, made some comments on our achievement programs, handed out calendars, and explained the activity of the Hazard Hunt. Each meeting one of our leaders will explain a different activity, some of which will be participated in by the entire club. The next meeting will be our Christmas party, Dec. 15/ at the home of the Knutsons. The meeting was adjourned and recreation was provided by the recreation chairman, Cheryl Knutson. Refreshments were served by the Bromans. Jeanne Wright, Club reporter. Some, as a matter of fact, cruise the highways rather deliberately and slowly in a search for safety, and in an effort to rescue stranded motorists. The Gear lords, for example, a teenage car club in California, could more aptly be named "Knights of the Good Turn," because its young members prowl the roads doing good deeds. In once such instance, a hugband braved the night to get medicine for his sick wife. On the way, his car broke down and he could not repair it. Members of the Gearlords came to the rescue and, while they couldn't fix the car, they did push it nine blocks to a garage. o Then they helped the man find an all-night drugstore. The relieved husband, medicine in hand, offered the youths some money, which they refused. Instead, they gave him a card, and said: "If you want to show your appreciation, tell your local police chief we helped you, and tell your friends not all teenagers are bad." t The card, bearing a picture of an armored knight, said: "You have been assisted by the Gearlords Car club, Altadena." According to California police, there are about 250 such clubs in the southern part of the state, with a total membership of about 4,000 teen-age boys. Each one is interested in improving the image of the teenage driver -- and constructively achieving that goal. Police say these young men "are a wonderful bunch of kids" who promote the idea of safe driving, assist other motorists in trouble, and organize such social activities as dances, DECEMBER 13, 1967 - PLAINDEALER - PG. 5 beach parties and car rallies. To which "Driver's Seat" can only add: "Let there be more clubs of this kind, stocked with the same kind of young men, bringing chivalry and the standards of King Arthur's court to the hazards of today's toads."
