FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 8, 1927) Kent and Company, local realtors, have volunteered their services in taking a census of the City of McHenry. They report having received numerous inquiries from people who are looking for locations for factories, as to the number of men over fifty years of age, over, twenty-one and over sixteen. Also as to the number of women in various groups. All these items are taken into consideration when a business is seeking a location. j Mrs. Alice Bradley passed away in her home in Ringwood, Dec. 5. The annual fair and bazaar which was recently put on by the members of St. John's parish in Johnsburg is reported to have netted the church the sum of $1,938.75. On Friday, Dec. 9, one of the new Ford cars will be on display at the Polly Prim Pavilion. The Knox Motor Sales, local Ford dealers, are putting on this event. "In the service of the queen" a feature photoplay with many scenes filmed at Pistakee Bay and Johnsburg is announced as a special attraction at the Empire theatre, Dec. 19. About 400 people attendedthe boxing matches Wednesday evening at the Polly Prim Pavilion. The matches were put on under the supervision of Joe Goffey, Chicago fight promoter, and under the auspices of the McHenry Rifle club. Christmas Savings club checks are being distributed this week by both of the McHenry banks, amounting to almost $20,000. He opening basketball game of the community high school was staged at Huntley last Friday night with the first team losing and the second team winning. The first team squad played a good game but were defeated with a score of 18 to 10. Joe Barbian made eight of the ten points. TWENTY - FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 10, 1942) Many of the old time residents in McHenry will hear with regret of the unexpected death Dec. 8 in a Chicago hospital of-Joseph Schoewer. He was 56 years old. Mr. Schoewer was a well known figure in McHenry civic life for many years before moving to Chicago about eighteen years ago. He was a partner in the tavern known as Brown & Schoewer, which was located on the site of the present Wattles Drug store in West McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. George Koester and baby have moved from the lower flat in the B.J. Brefeld place on Waukegan street, to DesPlaines. Pfc. Richard Frett has been transferred from Denver, Colo., to Modesto, Calif. The young people's athletic club enjoyed "Tournament night" last week upon completion of their first nine weeks period. Both men and women's ping pong tournaments with Helen Knox and Frank Johnson walking away with the prizes. A rfuxjed shuffleboard tournament/ resulted in Mary Knox and "Bob Newkirk being crowned champions. The American Red Cross has asked that all of the schools in McHenry County organize themselves as members of the American Junior Red Cross. Mrs. Joanne Rulien has been chosen chairman of the McHenry Junior Red Cross. Due to gas rationing and the fact that many of its members reside in the ^community surrounding McHenry, the Choral club will not continue rehearsals during at least the present season. TEN YEARjS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 27, 1957) Richard Smith of Pistakee Highlands agriculture instructor in the local high school has joined the Woodstock National Guard unit as a second lieutenant in the infantry. He replaces George A. Darrell of Wauconda who has completed his service in the Guard. Test borings were started Nov. 21 to determine sub-soil conditions under the property at the southwest corner of Pearl and Court streets which will be the future site of a dial telephone building. The exploratory work was done bytheGow Testing Laboratories. These test borings which took several days to complete, will help the engineering staff in planning structural details of the dial building. The house presently on the property has been purchased by Leonard Thennes and is to be moved to another location in McHenry. About 150 leading Republicans of the- county gathered at the Legion home Tuesday night to honor Mrs. C. Wayland Brooks, widow of the senator, on her first visit to McHenry county since becoming national committeewoman from Illinois. The Buckhholz boys, who have many friends in the Pistakee Lake region, continue their sailing now that they are in the UJ5. Navy. Etheredge, president pf McHenry County college, announced that it is not necessary for students to re-submit partial student support authorization if they have attended an out-of-district junior college the first semester of the 1967-68 school year. The. coverage will automatically be extended to cover the second semester since there will be no classes offered in junior college district 528 at present. Those who did not attend the first semester will need to obtain an application from the college office at 6200 Northwest highway (I.I.T. Bldg.) or by mail, P.O. Box 415, Crystal Lake, for the second semester. Fast Tree Redwood trees are fast growers. JOHNSCHARF SURPRISED AT ' BIRTHDAY PARTY Ruth and Harold Zapel of Wonder Lake gave a real surprise birthday party in honor of John ScharPs birthday (which was Monday, Dec. 11), in their, home on Saturday evening. After some real zany as well as nice gifts, all enjoyed a%ew game followed by a delicious midnight supper. A good time was had by the Zapels, Peg and John Scharf; Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Walsch of Mundelein; Mr. and Mrs. B. Schwantes of Woodstock; Wally Scharf of Bensenville; and Miss Mrytle Kleinschmidt. Aren't birthdays like that fun, John???? CARD CLUB ON SATURDAY The Card club met in the Walt Low home on Saturday night for a pot-luck supper to get in the Christmas spirit, followed by card playing. Walt Wilcox and Dorothy Benoy were high scorers for the evening with Glen Benoy and Althea Walkington for low. : CHRISTMAS VACATION The Ringwood school will be closed for the Christmas vacation from the twenty - second thru the first of January, 1968.
