Bond Issue Approval To Provide Middle School ; Tte bond tissue to be voted upott tWs Saturday, Dec. 16, will provide $2.0 million to the Grade School , district 15 if it is pa^se^. This money will be used to/ build a new middle gchocd* / The taiddle school was decided iqkhi for manor reasons. First of all, the growth of population of the district has caused the present school buildings of the district to be filled to capacity. New students next year will cause overcrowding.. Second, the shared time program in co-operation with St. Patrick's will be expanded, and St. Mary's has indicated a strong interest in the program. Third, to get as much new classroom space as possible for the taxpayer's money, the school board considered building a new school rather than remodel a present school. The middle school, in housing grades 5 through 8, will alleviate these problems for about five years if growth predictions prove true. By giving a 900 student capacity when complete, the school will take some of the pressure off of the elementary schools and the junior high school. The new classrooms will provide halfday homes for the shared time student s.also. OTHER POSSIBILITIES The school board, before deciding on the middle school, considered several other possibilities. Among them were: 1, Remodel the Junior high school and expand it to 900 capacity over its present 600. This would not alleviate the school system's problems for more than two years, andwOuld still leave the elementary classrooms in an overly crowded condition with no end in sight. 2. Build a new elementary school. This would have helped the situation by eliminating crowding in the elementary schools, but would have done nothing for the problems of shared time and of overcrowding in the junior high school. The $2.0 million will provide a plain school, a functional building, that will serve more than adequately the need of the students it houses. School prices have risen so in the past few years that, according to the architects Frazier, Raftery, Orr, and Fairbank from Geneva/ Ill., a plain furictional building with no unnecessary extras will cost about $17 per square foot. This is an increase of $4 pet- square foot over the past three years. PHASE I The complete structure will not be built at once, but will be built in two phases. Phase I will provide for classrooms for grades 7 and 8 and core facilities (library, cafeteria, gymnasium, etc.) for all four grades. Phase n includes the completion of the structure with the addition of classrooms for grades 5 and 6. Phase II will be completed when the bonding power of the district makes the funds available, but the money for this phase of the building is provided for in the bond issue of Dec. 16. The building will be ready* hopefully, by September of 1969, if the referendum for District 15 is passed on Saturday. DRIVING FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY by Paul Powell Secretary of Staff Extensive efforts have been undertaken to minimize accident frequency and severity thru altering the driving environment. Safer highways are being built every year. Safer vehicles are being built with padded dashes, toggle switches, mandatory seat belts. But the end result of safety must come from the driver himself. The driver must think safety every driving minute. Drivers training starts the driver out on the right foot Instructors try to instill proper "'driving attitudes in the mind of the driver. As of January 1, 1969, the minimum age to qualify will be 18 except for those 16 and 17 year olds who pass accredited drivers' education. STUDENT DRWtR J Hut what of t h e o l d e r d r i v e r who received his driver's license before drivers education was even t h o u g h t o f ? He i s just as prone to make poor decisions as anyone. How are we to reach him? r With the advent of frequent testing of drivers, many poor drivers could be restricted or even retrained. But this is in the future. To prevent that accident today, every driver must reassess his own driving, for his safety and that of his loved ones. Drive defensively! It's up to each driver to learn how and to practice defensive driving at all times. For safety sake, re-educate yourself now! Our Health By J. M. Amberson, M.D. CANCER AND HEREDITY Recent studies at the University of Nebraska and the University of Michigan strongly indicate that some families have greater proneness for cancer than the national average. After Ave years of study, researchers from the schools presented the following picture of the "cancerprone family" to physicians attending a recant American I Medical A s s oclatton^ convention. -D r . A. m.b e r s o n' • At least two Q u t Q f close relatives of the famllj currently have cancer. • Cancer develops among members of the family earlier in life than the national average. • Cancer can be found in all living generations of the family. • Members of the family "often show apathy, fatalism, and resignation toward the cancer problem." If further research proves the existence of cancer proneness in families, it will- help immeasurably to alert doctors to the possibility of cancer so it can be detected early enough to effect a cure. In the long run, the discovery of the cause of cahcer pronensss may greatly aid researchers in the discovery of the cause of cancer Itself. WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE STILL "YOUNG" AT 70 WHILE OTHERS ARE "OLD" AT 35? , The aging process is not fully understood by medical men, and in all likelihood, spme of ! the thoughts we now hold will change in the future. Obviously, from the moment an infant is conceived, the aging process begins, and its life span will depend on how rapidly these a n a t o m i c c h a n g e s w i l l t a k e place. There are so many factors affecting longevity, both mental and physical, that it is almost impossible to ~list them. You may inherit certain types of organs and body structure 'assuring' you a long life -- but at the same time stress (and tension) may predispose you to early mental collapse. An imbalanced diet, either too much or too little of certain substances, may hasten the aging process. Chronic diseases in youth affect later life. But there are so many variables that it is almost meaningless to attempt an answei\__A, frail body, not wrackedoy y o u t h f u l s e r i o u s i 1 l i v e s s or ^buse may well ocftlaSt a strong plagued^ by childhood disease^ ^r^rrilstreated in adult life. WHAT DISEASE IS IT THAT HAS THE INITIALS URI? It is not a single disease but the initials for upper respiratory infections, a wide range of disorders including everything from a minor cold to pneumonia ... in effect, any infectious disease attacking the upper respiratory tract. Many cases of URI can be selftreated. It is absurd to think that you will see your physician every time you have a cold or minor sore throat. For these uncomplicated illnesses, bed rest, liquids, and aspirin are all that is needed. If throat soreness is present, a relatively new oral solution called Chloraseptic has. been found effective for temporary relief of pain of i r r i t a t e d p h a r y n g e a l t i s s u e within seconds after spraying or gargling. When the symptoms are not minor, however, i.e., when fever is present or the symptoms seem to linger on for more than a few days, you should see your physician. ma . am • ~ m For Christmas ELGIN Watches Alscra large selection of Diamonds, and line Jewelry.
