r 1#' - ••••^sspp" "'•• <m "V/ "V PG. 4, SEC. 2 - PLAINDEALER - DEC. 20, 1967 Children's Home Needs TTie Woodstock Children's home is scheduling open house for Saturday, Dec. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. and Thursday, Dec. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in order that friends and any groups that may desire to visit the home and meet its boys and girls may do so. Contributions toward the county drive goal now total $8,646.36. As Christmas draws near, the home is operating at full capacity. Twenty-four boys and girls live in the main building at 840 Seminary avenue. Teenagers' Harrison House nearby has sixteen occupants. Fourteen children of varying age, brothers and sisters from five families, are growing up togetheran the Kishwaukee unit located on the western border of the city. Tliese boys and girls, along with their houseparents, are getting more excited and busier every day with the*ir plans for observance of the Christmas season. Untiring efforts are being made by these houseparents not only at this season, but through every day and every week that the boys and girls in the several dwellings may experience the joyful atmosphere, the pleasant circumstances and the tender relationships that every child has a right and expectation of finding in any good home. t To achieve their goal is costly. It requires a large number of workers: houseparents to supervise and guide the children, launderers, cooks, building caretakers, secretaries for record keeping and dispatching large mailings, etc. Such expenses are enbrmous, yet it is encouraging that each day's mail is bringing contributions from many new fiends, as well as from many who have been continuing contributors through the years. All contributions, large or small, are important and deeply appreciated. Your dollars will help tremendously. Service To Buyers There was a time when Christmas shopping meant searching for toys and trinkets. Today it means shopping for anything. While toys and novelties have become year-around sellers, work-a-day goods and services represent a growing part of ias consumption. *)The sales director of one department store has this to say modern Christmas shopping: "It is a phenomenon of longed, prosperity. The American child is supplied with toys throughout the year. Adults no longer postpone the purchase of luxury items until holidays. " When the consumer is not pressed to buy the basic goods for living, he makes little distinction between necessities and luxuries. Consequently, the demand for every type of product and service moves up at Christmastime. "It is a free and unpredictable market, wide-open to any seller with imagination. It is an advertiser's market, where competition is exercised through information media." Hie retail executive observed that increase in consumer wealth always stimulates competition and the need for advertising in greater quantity and quality. The truth of this statement is apparent to anyone who has attempted to buy gifts for a person who already has "everything". The job of choosing gifts may become more difficult than paying for them. Any type of good or service may be considered. Under such conditions, advertising which aids in gift selection is a valuable service to buyers and competitive insurance for the retailer. A MERRY CHRISTMAS? "Dear Editor: "Another year is passing. Christmas is ashorttimeaway. I have been trying to figure oat what has happened during 1967 to make it a merry Christmas but sadly I say I cannot. "We have developed into a nation of planners. When we compplain about certain conditions we now have appointed planners who plan for improvements that tarings more spending of the tax money which causes higher prices - taxes and demands for higher wages. Our deepest source of power and perfection has been left miserably undeveloped. Prayer, the basic expression of the spirit, must be activly practiced in out" private lives. For if the power of prayer is again released and used in the lives of common men and women, then, and only then, can our hope for a better world be answered. He advocated defensive driving and suggested there would be more safety on the highways if every driver realized that ouwr drivers may not be so considerate.
