DEC. 2# 1967 - PLAINDEALER - SEC. 1. PG. 5 .Ellen is, an unusual girl, for .she teaches a Sunday School class while she attends college, in my experience, not 10% of coeds even attend church! So see how you would try to answer her questions about "Comjjarativa Religions." .... By - George W. Crane, Ph. D.| M.D. CASE E-S43: Ellen B., aged 20, is a coed who teaches Sunday School. "Or. Crane," she began, "what makes the Christian religiondiffer from Buddhism and 'Confucianism? ?; ' 'Don't they also have special ' events like Christmas and Easter? | "I am to write a paper in my tcollege philosophy class on t 'Comparative Religions' so ( could you give me some ideas? | ANALYZE RELIGIONS ! When,Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them," he offered a good yardstick for c analyzing religions. Confucius was a good man and gave the world the Golden Rule, except he stated it ne- • gatively,, For he said "That which you would NOT have others do to you, do NOT to others." ^ And Moses gave us the Ten Commandments in the negative, for Kb told us NOT to kill and NOT to worship idols, etc. \ But Jesus launched a POSITIVE and very extrovertive religion in which he urged us to go into all nations and feed the hungry, heal the sick, teach and preach and visit the widow and orphans as well as those in prison. L He also swept aside petty ritual that still clutters 19 even our modern churches. ; For he told us that to get to heaven, we need to love God and fclso our fellow man. Please notice that he didn* t try to build religion on any special menu that we should eat or omit. / ;• For he stressed the fact that cfeligion depends on our brain and not our stomach. inic "Man does not live by bread alone," Christ stated. And he devastated his contemporary clergymen fay saying, "The Sabbath was made for man; not man, for the Sabbath." The outstanding difference between Christianity and other religions is its stress on the fact that we are children of an affectionate Almighty. God is not depicted as a cruel, vindictive or sadistic judge, but as a loving father. No other religions ever described their Deity as being a loving father who was willing to forgive his erring children innumerable times. In fact, the very birth of Jesus also contrasts with other religions, for the leaders of the latter started out as adults, like Athena who sprang full grown from her father's brow. Jesus begins as a newborn infant, which makes Him appeal to kiddies and mothers. He was not a conquering military Caesar or vicious Nero or despotic Attila. And the Christian emphasis on extrovertive action has spawned most of the world's hospitals, colleges, YMCA, Boy Scouts, Red Cro(3S, Salvation Army and other world philanthropy. Judged merely by their •'fruits", all other religions, combined can't remotely compare with the dynamic effect of Christianity! Even our American business men defer to it via their advertising at Christmas and Easter, starting two months before those events. Christmas is thus God's attempt to show mankind the vast extensiveness of his affection for us earthly children. No other Deity ever has sacrificed to us puny mortals!
