PG. 6, SEC, 1 - PLAIN DEALER - DEC. 20, 1967 Durirg the first quarter of the SStarrior-North Chicago Warhawk game here Friday night it looked like Coach Ludwig had found a combination that would click. • They had some good plays that worked just dandy up to the point where the game was 10- 10. It was in the second quarter that it became apparent that . some of our boys were losing the fine edge shown at the start. The visitors had some lanky boys who could stretch and the rebounding soon told the story. And the Hawks had some outshooting that spoiled our defensive plans. Some Warriors came off the bench in the last half to put a little dash in the game, but found a coiqjle of visiting reserves quite capable of holding the pace. At this point, it looks like McHenry fans are going to have to remain loyal to their team and hope for better days. We have neither the size nor enough outstanding talent to go too far. Things may look up soon. As for us -- they are our team, win or lose, as long as they give their best. We know the bogrs are doing just that. Take a look at that box score of the Friday game. North Chicago scored only one point from the free throw line. There wasn't too much whistle tootin'. For years the cry has been for the White Sox to get a power hitter. Now that they traded Tammy Agee for Tommy Davis a lot of fans think they gave too much. Davis has been a .300 hitter all the way. That in itself should be a novelty in Conriskey Park. Anyhow, there are enough One claim the men can make- Since the style makers came out with the turtle neck shirts, the men can claim they are wearing them higher than miniskirts. No danger of us wearing the turtle neck. Too many chins. But, we'll betcha our undershirts are longer than some minis we have seen on TV. Director of Conservation William T. Lodge said the inclement weather that hindered crop harvesting has also hindered the harvesting of cock pheasant. Game research has proved that many of the remaining pheasants will not survive through the winter months and the sound basic principles of game management is the utilization of these surplus cock pheasants. Pheasant hunters have bad little success so far and it is hoped that, since about 70 per cent of the corn has been harvested in the1 pheasant range, hun(prs will be more successful. SPORTS Warha*is Hintmr Warri@rs 63-33 The Sox have Berry and Snyder for center field so lef s not worry. We wouldn't be surprised to see Snyder in center and Berry, with his strong right arm, in right field. When we told Tom Wiles and Gene Morenz that we^h&d a trade pending -- Colovito for Killebrew -- they were sure Bimbo's slipped something in our salad dressing. Gabriel, blow your horn! Roman Gabriel quarterbacked the Los Angeles Rams to a rousing victory over the Baltimore Colts Sunday and must rate with the great ones off his record this year. That "Fearsome Foursome" in the middle of the Ram line didn't give Johnny Unitas a chance to show his passing skill. - By Bert Hagemann TOe North Chicago juggernaught rolled on unchecked this past Friday as the Warhawks overpowered a game, but mismatched McHenry squad, 63- \ 33. The Warriors bounced back well from a previous beating the week before, but the superior North Chicago fire power was too much for McHenry to handle. The fire power as usual contained fierce rebounding, air tight defense and superb marksmanship. It became evident after the ball game that once again McHenry had run into a relaxed, hot handed ball club. Jim Coles, War hawk guard, pumped in 14 points, mainly on 25 foot jumpers, to kill the orange and black 2-3 zone defense. Coles had not been a consistent high scorer all year, but alas, against McHenry, he turned in a fine performance. The Warrior zone and slow( down offense kept the Warriors nipping at the Warhawk heels for the first ten minutes of the game, and even the 26-16 edge at half didn't seem too much to overcome. However, big Dave McElroy turned in a red hot 3rd quarter as he dumped in five buckets to break the Warhawks into a big lead which they would never relinquish. The Warhawks shot 48% from the field against the Warrior 37% figure in a game which the officials called quite loosely. In a game such as this with its resulting roughness under the boards, you have to have muscle, and the superior height advantage unjoyed by the Hawks paid off handsomely in close. 'McHenry will take a short holiday rest now, and then go into the Christinas tournament at Batavia. The Warriors have drawn Thornton Fractional North and will play the 8:30 game on the 26th of December. This reporter feels a victory is forthcoming in this tournament, hope you're there to see it. Coach Grover's Hurricanes made a pretty good game of it for three quarters before the size and speed of the visitors took its toll. The well drilled Cook County Team controlled the boards and forced the much smaller Marian team to hurry shots. Marian continued to get balanced scoring with Mike Sullivan, John Anderson, Rich Meyers, Gene Hester and Tom Brankey all being in double figures. Coach Hans Roka's sophomores rolled to their third straight impressive win. Grayslake will be at Marian for a non-conference game Friday evening. Wrestlers 28-21 This past Tuesday the wrestling Warriors went doggedly down to their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Grant Bulldogs. The Warriors, wrestling without Jim Laursen and with Mike Antonicelli over his weight class, were edged in a hard fought battle, 21-28. The evening started off with two straight losses, with Easton losing by a whopping 17-1 margin, and Hansen getting pinned in the first round. Justen got the Warriors into the scoring column with a lopsided 11-0 decision, but Steiner followed with a loss, getting pinned at 4:25. Voight and Schlieben get the Warriors back into the fray with back to back victories, but the Bulldogs increased their lead as Olsen pinned Baur of McHenry at 2:55. Wahl managed a draw at 145 and Wagner pinned his man near the end of his match to once again bring the Warrior score into striking distance. However, because of weight problems, Coach Hutchinson was forced to forfeit at 165 and this seal-, ed the Warrior defeat. Antonicelli won a squeaker, 1-0, and Moose Mueller pinned his man in a quick minute and a half, but the damage had already 1 done and the orange and blac went down to their first defeat of the year. Hie boys scrapped and hustled, but loses down in the lighter weights put them too far in arrears to catch up.
