V F W AUXILIARY NEWS By Gerry Breede The ladles auxiliary to VFW post 4500 held its combined meeting and Christmas party on Monday, Dec. 11, in the VFW hall. A ttetai pot-luck buffet dinner was enjoyed by members and their guests, in Holiday environment. Guests for the evening were introduced and among them were Frances Pickett, president of the American Legion auxiliary, Phyl Harper and Leone Kathan, coleaders of the Holiday Hills Girl Scout Troop 478; Nancy Harper and Kim Kathan, Girl Scouts of Troop 478. On behalf of the Girl Scout troop the girls presented gifts and cards to Hospital chairman Mary Kuemmel, who in turn, will take these items to the patients at Downey Veterans hospital for their Christmas enjoyment. A short meeting was then held, at which there were few reports made due to the late hour the meetiqg was called to • toder.'v.- ' •• v- Follwing the meeting, all members and guests present enjoyed game s which were planned by Vi Schuble and Marge Moreth. The kitchen chairman for the evening's festivities was ViAbbink, who had as her helpers, Inez Young, Renee Jende, Marge Moreth and Vi Schuble. Karen Matt of 1217 Northeast drive, McHenry, was east - bound in<the driving lane of the parking lot at the rear of 1012 N. Green street when°a unidentified south-bound driver failed to see her car and skidded into it. There was considerable damage to the Matt auto. When Mary Ann Sharp of 1508 N. Court street, McHenry, came to a quick stop on Elm street, another auto driven by Roy Hi lided, causing damage to both. As James T. Groth of 4817 W. Willow lane, McHenry, was driving east in his traffic lane, he approached 'the intersection at West Shore drive and was blinded by the sun. The driver slowed down as he cleared the intersection and applied the brakes when he saw a figure on the shoulder of the road. The pedestrian was Mary L. Kotryck of 1918 N. Park lane, McHenry, who was knocked to the ground. She was taken to McHenry hospital, where no visible injury was found. Harold Alda and Bonnie Alda of Island Lake were treated and released from McHenry hospital following an accident The Knights of Columbus, McHenry Council No. 1288, will be showing the film, "The Parhursdi evening, Dec. 28, at 8U:155p ^.mr . at the K. of C. hall, 1304 N. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 22, 1927) Memories of her childhood home were brought back more vividly to the mind of Mrs. ^ Ella M. Wheeler this week when she received a Christmas wreath of pine branches which came to her with the fresh, sweet odor of the pine woods direct from Aroostook County, Maine. Having for its object the reforestation of Illinois, R.B. Miller, chief forester, department of conservation is preparing to launch a movement for the planting of fifty million trees in the state. The campaign will start with quota of one million trees being set for 1928. For 1929 this will be increased to ten million trees. For 1930 the mark of twenty-five million trees will be set. With the arrival of the first settlers to Illinois this territory was fortytwo per cent forest. At present there remains about one fifth the original forest. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 24, 1942) The passing of a 58 year resident of the Johnsburg community, Mrs. Mathias Jungen, has saddened her host of friends this Christmas season. Mm# Jungen, 82, passed away Jtfrher home Dec. 19 after a long illness. James Doherty, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Doherty, who reside south of this city, was home cm a furlough from the army air base at Topeka, Kan. The employees of the Ringwood Chemical plant and their wives and the employees of the Ewald Chemical company of Chicago were entertained at a seven o'clock dinner and Christmas party at the Talk of the Town in Chicago Friday evening. | TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 12, 1957) Friends of Michael J.Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brown of McHenry, were pleased to find a very well written story entitled "The Golden Age of Man" which appeared in the Sunday issue ofthe Chicago Tribune's Voice of Youth column. Gary Vogt received a trophy in recognition of being named by teammates as the outstanding football player for the MCHS Warriors in the season just ended. The presentation was made during the annual Kiwanis football banquet. Joy Fairchild of Bull Valley road suffered a concussion in a fall in the shower room of the local high school after a gym class and is confined to the Woodstock hospital. The entire Chicago area took a personal interest in the birth of triplets to an Antioch couple this past week.
