#G.'i2, - PlAlNbEALER- DECEMsIr 27, 1967 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARSf AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 29, 1S27) Mrs. Helena Heimer and son, Leo, Mr.,and Mrs. Joseph Hoffman and son, John, were guests at an "Old Fashioned Christmas Party" given by Colonel R.R. McCol-mick oftheWheaton Post, American Legion, at the hotel Sherman in Chicago. Three thousand American Region men were present. Turnbull's Elburn Collegians defeated McHenry 33 to 31 last Friday evening in one - of the best and fastest games ever played in McHenry. A party of young friends surprised Marvin Meyers on Wednesday afternoon, the event being his eleventh birthday. Those present were Buddie Baur, Freddie Meyer, Freddie Jerak, Willis Schreiner, Kenneth Marshall, Ralph Bouril, Gerald Meyers, and Marvin Meyers. The members of the senior class sponsored a Christmas party which was given at the community high school. The party was attended by nearly 150 students with their friends and instructors, who spent a jolly evening at games and dancing. Music was furnished by the Gold Coast orchestra. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 31 1942) Mrs. Mary Miller, 90 years old, died in her home at Spring Grove, Dec. 28, after an illness . of only a few days. The number of persons killed in Illinois highway accidents during October this year was exactly one half that for October 1941. The figures are 109 this year, 218 last year. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vales became the proud grandparents of their first grandchild when a baby was born Dec. 27 to Mr. and Mrs. William Vales of Cicero. The 8% lb. girl will be named Louise Marie. Emil Simon, Jr., formerly of> Park street, who has been in C.P.T. training since November was given his silver wings Dec. 9 at the Minnesota training school. Veteran ten pin topplers of the country enjoyed their annual get-together at the Gold Coast Recreation in Chicago recently when the roundup of the Quarter Century bowlers presented many prominent figures in the bowling game. Ted Hartman, former McHenry resident, carried off the laurels of being the oldest active bowler in the United States and received congratulations for his eighty-third birthday. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 19, 1957) A most serious fire occurred about 7:30 Friday morning when the beautiful large home of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Garland on Brandenberg road about five miles northeast of McHenry burned to the ground. McHenry fire fighters were called to assist when the Fox Lake department, in whose district the home was located, found the flames out of control. Mrs. Mabel Powers fell on a slippery walk as she left St. Patrick's church Sunday morning and suffered a broken arm. Miss Jean Weingard of Lakemoor became the bride of Mr. David Jacobson of Island Lake on Dec. 14. McHenry is represented in the current record enrollment at Marquette university in Milwaukee by thirteen local students. The high school gymnasium took on a beautiful holiday appearance as the Future Business Leaders of America sponsored their annual Christmas dance. The theme of this year's undertaking was "Snow Flake Flurry" a title submitted by Andre Larsen and Mary Lou Watkins. Craig Howard is the name selected by Mr. and Mrs. Lester Smith for their new son, born at Memorial hospital Dec. 12. Women The Moose McHenry Chapter 1348, Women of the Moose, gathered for their annual Christmas dinner beginning at 6:30, D^c. 19. A lovely chicken dinner Was served by Social Service^Chairman, Nancy Strossner arid her committee. ' At 8 p.m. the regular meeting was called to order by Senior Regent Marcella Strossner. After the fourfold, Junior Graduate Regent Gloria Flannigan presented Senior Regent Marcella Strossner with a special Christmas gift in behalf of the chapter. Guides Dolores Maxson and Doris Schabow escorted Howard Rauhut, steward, and Ed Molitor, custodian, for the presentation of their Christmas gifts. Special award was received by Marie Perschke but Olga Zeeman was not present to get the attendance award. Dessert and coffee were served after the meeting. Games were played, with Gayl Marchard, Helen Nielsen, Marge Nolan, Dolores Maxson, Diane Burgdorf, Muriel Gilmore, Marcella Strossner, Florence Tussey, Carol Perschke and Gene Dember the recipients of gifts.
