COMPUTER CONTAINERIZATION As the economies of the United States and Europe boom, the amount of international trade between the two continents is increasing tremendously. How industry can meet the demands of export and still keep a reasonable profit margin is a prime problem. The availability of transportation to ship products, is becoming more difficult. And finally how companies not now exporting to the lucrative European market can break in and expand their sales. The solution to these problems can be found in the changeover from conventional break-bulk shipping to "Unitization" of cargoes. Unitization is attained by the use of containers, large enclosed boxes, standardized at 8 feet wide, 20 or 40 feet long and 8 feet high, mounted on wheels or flatbed car or truck. These containers are similar to truck trailers. The system whereby containers are packed for transportation and driven to the pier, loaded by special equipment unto containerships and then unloaded is called "Containerization". Today, container shipping lines move more merchandise to foreign ports faster and at lower cost than any other method. Atlantic Container Lines Ltd., a combine of several ^ European steamship lines is qpe of the major fleets using this new shipping procedure. An integral part of ACL's service will be computerized freight administration and container control. To accomplish this they have purchased the Sperry Rand Univac 418-II real-time computer, satellite data communication eqg|i|>ment such as the Univac DCT-20W and Univac 1004 systems. This computer system overcomes all logistical problems. Atlantic Container has 3000 containers strategically located in "heavy" shipping centers throughout the country. With the computer an agent is always, "on linf, having the ability to tell a shipper where and when a container is available instantly. The Univac 418-11 is processing the loading of containershipson a minute by minute basis. Computerization combined-with Containerization will in the future make it possible for industries to achieve increased overseas trade with minimal difficulty. WINS SERVICE AWARD' Donald A. Williams, head of the Soil Conservation Service of the U.S.«Department of Agriculture, received the $10,000 Rockefeller public sefvice award in the field of Administration. As the third head of the Soil Conservation Service since its establishment by Congress in 1935, Williamshas guided the agency's program through its great change from "the dustbowl age" when erosion control was its primary responsibility, to current additional responsibilities for water conservation, flood control and land use planning. With dear friends I herald the birth of the new year, and together we sing, "should auld acquaintance be forgot." Cries of "Happy New Year" fill the air, as I say farewell to the old year that cannot come attain. I recall days of joy and sorrow, frustration and success. I remember things not done that should have been, and accomplishments of which I am extremely proud. Beside the measure of the year's defeats, I total up its victories. The credit side far outweighs the debit, for over all the days I see the shadow of my church. I end my retrospection, and rejoin festivities. With God and His Church at the center of my life, I am fortified for whatever comes in the days ahead. Your church is a source of courage and strength sufficient to every need. Attend your church, and face the future confidently.
