PG. 4, - PLAINDEALER - Jan 3, 1968 Warriors Drop A Couple Of 1 -Point Squeakers In Tourney By Bert Hagemann It was heartbreak week this past week as coach Ken Ludwig watched his charges go down to a pair of consecutive defeats in the Batavia Holiday Tournament. The Warriors dropped a 67-66 decision to the Thornton Fractional Meteors, and then followed up with a heartbreaking 70-69 loss to the Vikings of Geneva. On Tuesday night before a good McHenry following, the Warriors tangled with a mediocre Thornton ball club., -1 The first half saw a stone cold Warrior ball club try and stay within striking range of a burly, hot shooting opponent. The Warriors committed numerous turnovers the first half as" the , air tight officiating repeatedly detected the McHenry players violating the traveling and lane regulations. Although the orange and black played a horrendous two quarters, they found themselves in arrears by only eight points as they took the floor for the third quarter. It was h?re that McHenry finally turned a hot hand and crept to within one point of their opponents by the end of the quarter. Led by the scoring of Fairchild, Martin, and Hurckes, the Warriors fought through the last stanza even up with the Meteors until the final 30 seconds of the game. With the Warriors in possession of the ball and the score tied, time out was called and a play set up. With 15 seconds remaining, the Warriors got the lay-up only to have a foul called against the Meteors while Don Reinboldt was %shooting. The resulting two free throws were missed, Thornton roared down the court and their shooter was fouled with five seconds remaining. He made one of the charity tosses and that was the ball game. However, McHenry still had a game to go in the consolation bracket, and they jour jst _ lose by one point again. The Scrappy „ Wfurriors rebounded well, cui down their floor mistakes to a minimum, and did everything but win. Once again it was a see-saw battle, although McHenry led through almost the whole game. Again it came down to the final seconds of the game, but this time McHenry held a slim one point lead. With 15 seconds remaining, the McHenry guard had the ball stolen and the VikingS cashed in the field goal as time was running out. The Warrior desperation shot at the buzzer failed and once again it was 'defeat, only it with a capital D. The orange and black lers showed signs of jelling in this tournament and it's a shame that their efforts were rewarded with two squeaker defeats. Warrior fans must realize that when you are playing three juniors and a sophomore regularly, mistakes are going to ^appen because of inexperience. If the fans can remain patient perhaps they will soon be re- , , victory. It's Broncos at McHenry this FriThornton - 67 day night, see your there. The well balanced Broncos are led by guard Brian Clay, who is a real hustle** and a ball handler. His running mates include two husky forwards, Murdock and Showers, along with swing man John English. This Barrington ball club is not the powerhouse of past years, but they have managed to stay in the thick of the fight for the North Suburban cfown so far this year. ^ McHenry showed signs of coming to life in the holiday tournament and maybe now are ready to make a run of victories materialize. The last two.games they played were good efforts, and if spirits can be maintained, perhaps the Broncos will be in for a surprise. The first game starts at 6:45 and pits two very, fine sophomore ball clubs against each other. If possible, try and get there to get a glimpse of the Warriors of the, future. sufficient to cree, to-wit: satisfy said De- NOTICE v Public Notice? is hereby given that on December 13th, A.D. 1967, a Supplemental certificate was filed in the Office of the County Clerk of McHenry County, Illinois* setting forth the names and post <- office addresses of all of the persons owning, conducting and transacting the business known as CHAS. Yep. All the way to Chicago. ^ It happened this way. With our daughter home for the holidays, she and Mom planned the trip to see Camelot. Our tickets were for Thursday matinee. Roads were slippery that morning and weather reports were not too good. Father vetoed driving to the loop, but approved the short drive to Crystal Lake to hop a train. As it turned out, we could have been half way to Chicago while • we hunted for a sik>t to park our car., That is a problem for planners to consider. Nothing very exciting happened on the way to the Northwestern station in Chicago. Regular commuters read a little, slept a little and rejoiced when somebody left so they could stretch their legs. Some riders who hadn't taken the train for some time looked out tho windows. Four women got sitatedtoplay^ cards, but never got to tiiegame. Too much to talk about. This is the first time McHenry has competed in this tournament, which takes the place of the annual holiday Tournament that McHenry usually enters. The field of schools is extremely strong, and the orange and black matmeh will face some very tough competition. Schools in the field are the host school, Barrington, Fort Atkinson, John Marshall, Muskego, Waukesha, and Racine Park, last years Wisconsin state championship squad. Northern lllini Bowmen News Orville Gosse of Wonder Lake was elected President of Northern lllini Bowmen for the coming year of 1968. His Vice President will be Mickey Heffernan of Lake Villa. The big job of Secretory which includes writing of the monthly club bulletin went to Marilyn Gustafson of Island Lake. Reelected to their present offices were Tresurer Betty Houser of McHenry and Classification Director, Joan Copley of Wonder Lake. Elections and a short meeting were followed by a buffet featuring venison cooked by excellent chef,° Edna Paddock. The venison, of course, was provided by NIB bowhunters. Very appropriate table decorations were provided by Marilyn Gustafson who was in charge of the buffet. Installation of officers will be at the Northern lllini Bowman Annual Banquet and Dance at the American Legion Hall on January 20th. and Warrior grapplers will have to put forth the supreme effort to score well against such top notch competition. The first session starts at 11:00, the Semi- Finals take place at 1:30, and the consolation and finals will be held in the evening at 7:30. This means that to go to the finals, a wrestler wputd have to go through three matches in one day. This is quite a feat in itself, so , if you wantto witness some terrific high! school wrestling, get up to (Hie or all the sessions.
