PG.4, - PLAINDEAIER - WED., FEB. 7, 1968 Grade Schoolers Scramble For Ball i St. John's and St. Pat's players seem to be taking heed to the welcome sign in the background as they appear to be shaking hands during the action in which St. Pat's capture first (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) place in the tournament by beating "St. John's 39-31. In the first game, McHenry Junior high took third place by winning over St. Mary's. - SO I HE The suspense is too much. We have been waiting and waiting to hear from a certain magazine as to whether we won a Cadillac or $5,000. They told us we were one of three inour cdmmQnity whose number had been drawn. At least 15 other people have told us they received the same notice. Now we are confused! We congratulate "Hezzie" Miller and his grade school basketball team for winning the American Legion annual tournament three years a-runnin*. "Hezzie", with a big lift from Larry Huck, has done a great job of coaching those boys. Men who give so much of their time and talents to help the boys in our community deserve the gratitude of all. By Earl Walsh Mary Freupd and had one heckuva good time. The speaker of the evening was a good one, mixing in some humorous little gems in his talk. At our table were Joe and Mary Etten. Mary is one of our true blue White Sox fans and member of "Friends of Irish Freedom", which makes her our pal. Fred and "Tinky" Meyer were at the other end of the table having much fun. Governor "Biff" and Esther Meyer toured out from Chicago to join our crowd. K was a great night for "Biff". He keeps track of people in the old home town, knows most everybody and gets acquainted fast with those whom he doesn't know. Jim Doran, who has been an old fox himself in coaching ranks, tells us "Hezzie" took him by surprise by throwing a man to man defense at his team. We attended the McHenry hospital annual dinner meeting at the McHenry Country club Saturday night with George and Northern III in i Bowmen News Northern Mini Bowmen have taken to indoor shooting during the cold winter months. Hunting seasons are over leaving only varmit shooting or difficult shooting at the outdoor range due to heavy clothing and frozen bales. Every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. the archers gather at the indoor range in Crystal Lake, upstairs at 67 N. Williams street (Daves Sport Shop). Winners of the first competitive club shoot were: Lee Kiltz shooting with sight; Orv Gosse barebow; Marilyn Gustafson barebow; Gary Campbell in the junior division. Several archers wives have •' taken 15) the bow and are being coached during the practice sessions on noncompetitive Wednesday evenings. All interested archers are invited to watch and/or participate. The next shoot for medals will be Feb. 7. Father Baumhofer was there to lead the prayer and spread cheer amongst the crowd. Heard he and A1 Blake celebratedtheir birthdays the past week, but haven't been able to run down their ages. At least we know they are old enough to vote. By plunking down his $1 entry fee, a shooter can bag three chickens by making the highest score in a five-man squad; or, if he depends upon luck as much as skill, he may compete in the Double White Bird Shoot, in which the lucky nimrod gets a; chicken for each white bird he knocks down, plus a chicken for making' the high score. Or he may sign up for the Hi-Lo-White Bird Shoot and get a chicken for making the lowest tally; or a chicken for the highest count, plus one for the white bird. In a white bird shoot a white target is released from the trap at unknown intervals. The trap operators cannot see the shooters, and so are unaware of their identity. This precludes any chance of favoritism or connivance. Regular targets are black and yellow. If a white target is missed, another is thrown until the requisite number are shot down. Friday night the Warrior shad to take their conference turn at being beaten bythe red hot Warhawks of North Chicago. The big red from the lakefront dominated all phases of the game, as evidenced by game statistics which gave them a 2-1 edge in rebounding, few floor mistakes, and twice as many shots as McHenry had. Herein lies most of the story concerning this game. McHenry would get a shot, then North Chicago would get the ball. North Chicago would take a shot, and if they missed, the ball would be put up again and again until it went^in. The tough Warhawks are fclearly the class team of the North Suburban, mainly due to great team speed and rebounding skill which is matched nowhere else in the league. This game was almost a carbon copy of the first encounter between the two ball clubs, with Walls, McElroy and Blanchard sweeping the boards, and Coles, Rowell and Eiserman providing the back court heroics. McHenry opened the game in a zone defense, but the Warhawks punctured it so effectively that the Warriors were forced into a 39-16 defecit and Warrior fans could sit back and hope that the final outcome would not be too horrible. Now much more can really be said of this game, as McHenry was simply outmanned, outgunned, and outpowered, in every phase of the basketball game. So the rollercoaster season continues for coach Ken Ludwig and his charges, this week being one of those weeks when the roller coaster hit dead bottom. Perhaps next week against Barrington the coaster can reach apeak, lefs hope so. Box Score McHenry - 39 Fairchild FG FT PF T Pts 2 2 3 6 last year's celebration. Watchers, are welcome, too. The visitors shot .565 from the field and .700 from the free throw line to coast to their 17th straight win. Kevin Las, Joliet's 6 foot 10 inch center, led the scoring with 21 points, John Anderson had 16 for Marian. Joliet Catholic was the third state ranked team to defeat Marian and most observers felt that the Joliet team is stronger than either Notre DameofNiles or East Aurora. The Will County team appears to have more depth than the other two and would seem to be sharper on defense. St. Patrick Five Legion Grade School Basketball Tournament MCHS Wrestlers St. Patrick's proved to be the class of the field in taking the Grade School American Legion Basketball Tournament for the third straight year. They have now gained permanent possession of the coveted traveling trophy and join St. Mary's as the only school ever to retire one. In both the finals and the semi- finals Coach "Hezzie" Miller's proteges proved which team excels in our area. In the championship game, they built . ujj a commanding lead the first ^t}iree quarters and then staved off a fine but inadequate rally by St. John's to win 41-31. Against St. Mary's in the semis, the Irish roared to a dominating lead at the half, 22-11. They then maintained their position with continued fine outshooting to romp home .39-25. St. John's fashioned another exciting victory, like its first rounder, in the semis by nipping McHenry Junior high 31- 29. The Runners-up probably showed off, their best talents in this contest when they blew out to a 22-13 lead in the third quarter. McHenry Junior high came on Saturday to play its most sparkling ball to blast St. Mary's 40-25 to take the third place trophy. The American Legion Champions, the Irish of St. Patrick's will now head into the Diocesan Tournament at Elgin next Sunday as the prime favorite', along with St. Patrick's of St. Charles, to take that title. The members of Coach "Hezzie" Miller's championship squad are: Mark Hoffmann, Ron Miller, Carey Fenner, Mike Ruemelin, Mike Rogers, Mike McCormick, Greg Bartos, Joe Carey, Glen Jenkins, Tom O'Brien, Jeff Thelen, Larry Huck, Toitt Mil- ! ler and Tim Gertz. Among those discoveries, for example, is the fact recently brought to light that a condition similar to schizophrenia; . .the mental disease of the so-called splitpersonality. . .can be brought about in a normal person bythe administering of a new drug.
