County Bkddub Pays TriBwis To Clarence Sparks Hie meeting of McHenry county chapter, Illinois Audubon society, on Feb. 10 opened with solemnity while it paid tribute to an esteemed member, Clarence Sparks of Woodstock, killed in an automobile accident a few days before. President Maurice Watson of Crystal Lake read one of the many poems Mr. Sparks himself had written, "A Conservation Prayer", appropriate because it expressed the ideals and also the dangers which had made him strive valiantly through many years to preserve natural beauty in a world which seems to be losing its sense of values. President Watson appointed a committee of three, Mrs. William Carroll of Woodstock, chairman, James Pearson of Ringwood and Mrs. Kenneth Fiske of Woodstock, to formulate plans for a suitable memorial. Making arrangements for the club's first excursion of the year, scheduled for Saturday, March 9, are Mrs. George Skinkle and Miss Bertha Anderson of Crystal Lake and Miss Alice Smith of Woodstock. Members will travel by bus to Milwaukee to repeat the tour of Mitchell Park conservatories and the Milwaukee zoo aviary which they so much enjoyed last year. At the February meeting, which was in the McHenry County Farm Bureau building at Woodstock, Miss Alice Clark reminded members that bird nesting records must reach her by the end of the month for reporting to the state IAS. Mrs. Peacock evoked exclamations of surprise when she told of a bald eagle having been recently discovered and positively identified in the Wonder Lake area. Mrs. George Baker of Belvidere had brought a copy of Purple Martin News for the display of conservation material arranged by past president Darlene Fiske. President Watson thent the meeting over to Jim son, past vice-president and program chairman, for introduction of the speaker whom he had secured for the evening. Norbert Ziemer of Union, director of the Outdoor Education Center in Veteran Acres, Crystal Lake. Enthusiastically, Ziemer scanned the progress in organized outdoor education in Illinois since its tentative beginning thirteen years ago until now, when thousands of -children, teachers, parents and townspeople participate here, as well as in other states such as Wisconsin where the program is widely promoted. In Crystal Lake during 1967, the Center's firstyear, 2,000 children from kindergarten through junior high school were involved. The director read a letter from the high school biology department also, indicating that pupils have notably benefited from an outdoor study background. Ziemer then showed a motion picture, "Just Beyond the Chalk Board", which has been filmed in part on the Lorado Taft campus of Northern Illinois university. It gave the audience a resounding affirmative answer to the question , "Are outdoor education experiences worth the time and effort they require?" It indicated that a rapidly growing number of teachers say outdoor study is uniquely valuable in developing basic skills of observation, individual thought, inquiry, discovery, identification, memory, research proa *nAV.;:£ *• <V * A " " Northern Pump Company Farms, McHenry, was the exhibitor of the first-place summer yearling female in strong Register of Merit Hereford competition at the recent Southwestern Exposition and Stock Show in Fort Worth, Texas. USE "PAL" FOR 'AIRLIFTING OF OVERSEAS PARCELS Parcels for airlifting to U.S. servicemen overseas should be marked "PAL" to help speed delivery, Postmaster General Lawrence F. O'Brien said this Parcels up to 30 pounds in weight and 60 inches in length and girth combined may be sent to U.S. servicemen anywhere in the world for $1 each, plus the domestic parcel post charges. The parcels receive airlift handling all the way. In instructions to post offices covering the new service, the Post office department has suggested that the simple designs tion of "PAL" (parcels for air lift) be used as a standard i dentification mark. Mailers ar encouraged to write or print "PAL" on the outside, cover of the parcels. This provides instant recog nition of the parcels as mai entitled to airlift to service men overseas and minimize any possibility that the par eels might be handled errone ously as regular surface do mestic parcel post. • STORE HOURS Phone 385-3200 USE THE CLASSIFIEDS n r AM N PM AM 10 PM THRU FRIDAY, SAT THURS.
