His many friends and neighbors surprised Will Harris at his home west ofthiscfty on Saturday evening, the event being planned in honor of his birthday anniversary. About seventy people filled the pleasant large farm house to capacity and spent a most enjoyable evening in dancing. Music was furnished by Mr. Ebert of Dundee with his concertina. M.A. Conway and daughters entertained several friends at their home in honor of the former's son, Robert Conway, of Notre Dame, who was home for the weekend. Miss Adele Ann Pufahl", daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Pufahl; and Mr. Ferris A. Ry near son were united in marriage Feb. 11. The ceremony took place at St. Patrick's rectory with Rev. Fr. William O'Rourke officiating. Mrs. Charles M. • Goodell, the local health seal sale chairmen for McHenry, is responsible for the very fine sale in McHenry this year. This work of the local chairman must be donie during the holiday season the busiest time of the year. It is a real community service which she had given without compensation. TWENTY - FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 18, 1943) Eugene James Justen of McHenry is now enrolled as an aviation cadet in the Army Air Forces Pre-Flight school for pilots at Maxwell Field, Ala. Mrs. Elmer Jensen and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Chritensen, left Friday evening for California where they will visit their husband and son, Elmer Jensen, who is serving with the Navy there. Mr. and Mrs. Nick Nett celebrated their silver wedding anniversary at their home on Riverside drive, the wedding date was Feb. 11. A new 4-H club project has been made available for McHenry county members this year to recognize the activities of youth toward the war effect. The name of this new plan is Victory Service Project. Mr. and 'Mrs. Frank Blake have moved from their farm near Lily Lake to the home of the late Mrs. McCarthy on Elm street which theypurchasedrecently. According to Mr. Reihansperger orders have come through to have a booth some place in towh for the sale of war stamps. The Red Cross will be assigned for the sale of these stamps just as soon as possible. This coming week will be the beginning of the course conducted by Miss' Justen in canteen work. The twenty-hour nutrition course has been completed by the canteen workers and now they are ready for the canteen work. After doing his best throughout the winter to keep our slippery streets safe for the rest, W.C. "Peggy" Felt? fell on the ice and suffered an injury to his leg. - TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 6, 1958) Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vycital and Miss Frances Vycital attended the Wisconsin Retailers Hardware convention held in Milwaukee this week. The Robert Tennent family has moved from the Jung house on South Green street to the place on Route 120 west of the city recently vacated by the Magnus Nelson family. Miss Mary Ann Miller of Johnsburg became the bride of Howard Knox of McHenry in a pretty wedding service at St.< John the Baptist church, Jan. 25. Miss Dorothea Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Miller, has been named the homemaker of tomorrow in McHenry. She received the highest score in a written examination on homemaking knowledge and attitudes taken by graduating girls in the local high school. Commissions in the nations armed services will be awarded Feb. 15 to eighty-three University of Illinois students who have completed work in the reserve officers' training corps, among them Ralph W. Bennett of Riverside drive, McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brefeld, Jr., of Fort Worth, Texas?announce the birth of their first child, a son, Paul George, born Jan. 23. Mrs. Brefeld is the former Joanne Stilling. Peter C. Lieser died unexpectedly Feb. 3 at his McCullom Lake home. Harry Scholtz of 101 East Second street, McHenry has retired after thirty-two years as a mail carrier, the last quarter century with headquarter* at the Irving Park Station^ A party anddance in his honor was held for employees of the station at which time he was presented with a complete fishing outfit, a gift of money and other remembrances from business friends. Minor Crashes Investigated Minor accidents have kept McHenry police busy in recent days. Henry W. Lauber of 2822 W. Lincoln road, McHenry, was driving west on Waukegan road and made a left turn into a driveway in front of Dorothy K. Witt of Woodstock, who was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision. As Mykell E. Freund of 1511 N. Park street, McHenry, stopped at the Green and Pearl street intersection before entering, her car and another driven by Julia V. Koon of 4321 E. Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake, collided as the second auto started. A three-car crash involved vehicles driven by Fanniedell Parker of ,Woodstock, Matthew S. Wojnick of Broadview, 111., and Victor Smith of 3235 N. Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake. Police said the Parker car was east-bound on Elm street and stopped for the red light. The second car, following to close, was unable to stop, striking the first auto, and .the third, also following too close, struck,the second. Howard S. Voeltz 3802 W. Waukegan road, McHenry, was driving west on Rt. 120 when his car slid off the road into a ditch. In another accident, Frank ' B. Sontowski, Jr., of 1208 Sunset road,'McHenry, was traveling south in the old Legion parking lot, ready to turn from behind parked cars. A car driven by Michael A. Westphal of Rt. 1, Spring Grove, was westbound and neither was able t6 stop to avoid the collision because of icy road conditions. Harold F. Meyer of 5114 W. Waukega n road, McHenry, was backing out of & driveway on Waukegan road and failed to see the west-boufld vehicle driven by Eugenia H. Ehlenof3608 W. Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake. The cars collided. Lawrence J. Huck of 3411 W. Washington street, McHenry stopped for the light at Front and Elm streets, .was struck by another car driven by James W. Ambrose of Crystal Lake, which was following closely and v is unable to stop in time to avoid the collision. -KATHERINE WEISS , Funeral services were conducted from a Chicago funeral home Tuesday afternoon for Ka-. therine -H. Weiss, 59, of Spring Grove, who died Feb. 16 in Victory Memorial hospital, Waukegan. Burial was in Concordia cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Clarence, and her mother residing in Germany. The body was taken to the Hamsher chapel in Fox Lake before removal to Chicago.
