McHenry Community High school will be represented by Annette Margaret Haines in the northwest division competition of the Penny Flame Home Economics Awards program, sponsored annually by Northern Illinois Gas company. She will meet with olher contestants from the area on March 16 in Crystal Lake. As a high school freshman. Miss Haines is entered on the senior level of the program and • seeks college scholarship awards of $1,000 or $300. Junior level contestants compete for monetary awards of $200 and $100. At the division contest, two seniors and one junior will be selected to advance to the final round in the program scheduled for March 30 in Aurora. Annette is being sponsored by her home economics teacher, Mrs. Ethel Hornby. She is 14 and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Haines, 825 N. Front street, McHenry. Annette enjoys all phases of homemaking and is looking forward to majoring in home economics in college. TEN YEARS AGO CTaken from the files of March 6, 1958) Catherine Beattie, supervisor at the local telephone office and Elaine Gustafson, June Viverito and Barbara Link, all operators, had a busy day recently when they handled three emergencies in seven minutes. Within that short space of time they had summoned help for three persons in need of emergency aid as the result of a fall, a heart attack and accidentally swallowing poison. All three stories had happy endings. A burglar entered the Community Auto supply on Rt. 120 and took about thirty dollars in bills and change. A contract, was awarded to Hampshire Electric company of Dixon, 111., to install traffic signal lights at the corner of Riverside Drive and Elm street. Several months of illness ended the suffering of Mrs. John J. Sullivan, March 1. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Norbert Yegge, at the age of 89.
