CULLOM LAKE NEWS EVE LEVESQUE 885-4141 MAN RESCUED • FROM BROWNING IN McCULLOM LAKE The combined efforts of Mrs. Hay (Elizabeth) Fisher, the McHenry police and fire, departments succeeded in saving Harold Schaeffer's life last Thursday as he plunged into the icy waters of the lake while ice fishing. Details of the story appeared in Wednesday's issue of the Plaindealer. Mrs. Fisher became alarmed as she watched Harold and a companion on the dangerous ice which was breaking up rapidly because of thawing conditions. His companion left in safety and Harold continued his winter sport until the ice refused to hold him and he fell through, about an hour after walking out on the ice. The dance will be held at the Sponjia Camp with Len Jensen, Jr., as chairman. His committee met last week and the tickets will be available .in the near future. The affair promises to be an exciting one with refreshments games and prizes scheduled and the services of an excellent band has been obtained. HALF POUND HOLDS 80 POUNDS AT BAY A howling sight in the Earl Nelson living room the other P.M. as Ken's new Siamese kitten - about eight ounces of fluff held Hansie, the family dog, at bay. Hansie is lot of canine and weighs in the area qf 80pounds, but he was no match for the irate feline, who never lost composure during the encounter. The Nelsons were fearful that the big canine would injure the smaller pet, but that came to an end as Hansie investigated the little mite and was met with a spit and a flash of sharp claws. He retreated to a corner and cowered for about an hour and a half. In the meantime, Elma and Don howled with glee. CELEBRATE GRANDDAUGHTER'S FIRST BIRTHDAY It was full house at the Earl Murray home as the married children came home with their spouses to celebrate Lorene Murray's first birthday, March 17. Implementing an amendment to the Federal Revenue and Salary Act of 1967 aimed at deceptive solicitations, the regulations published in the Register require the following notice on each solicitation: "This is a solicitation for the order of goods and/or services and not a bill, invoice, or state- , merit of account due. You are under no obligation to make any payments on account of this offer unless you accept this offer." The regulations also require that the warning be printed in type no smaller than 12-point in size and that in no case shall it be less conspicuous than the boldest type used to print other words on the solicitations. The Department's General Counsel, Timothy J. May, expects the amendment to "dryup" a scheme which has defrauded thousands of mail patrons each year. One of the largest groups victimized by these solicitations are the businesses and other organizations listed in the classified sections, or Yellow Pages, of telephone directories. SOLICITATIONS IN MAIL MUST BEAR WARNING A performance type award was issued by the Post Office department this week to Eugene P. Schaefer, an employee of the McHenry post office, it was announced by Postmaster LeRoy Smith. Mr. Schaefer earned this award by performing the most important functions of his job in a manner which substantially exceeds normal require merits and otherwise qualifies as a good employee. Standards established by the department rate Mr. Schaefer's route as being a 75% hour per week route and Gene accomplishes this much work very week in 55 hours or less. The citation further states that his performance represents a high degree of effectiveness in that seldom is a complaint filed as to the service he renders. Post office employees receive raises in salary every year for the first seven years and then every three years for fifteen years.
