.Gouty % . • -1 Presents Bri gummer^ is approaching and with it approaches the higher possibilities of children receiving bites from rabid animals of stepping on a rusty tetanusinfected nail or catching one of severaL other preventable illnesses. But Spring is a time of expectation and happy planning too. One of the bright spots in McHenry county's health picture is the new Biologies Distribution center in the pharmacy of McHenry hospital. This center will distribute disease preventing drugs to any physician who requests them, and the expectations of the pharmacists and hospital administrator are that the center will serve the entire county. This summer will be the first full summer that the center is operating. Acting on a request from the division of Preventative Medicine of the Department of Public Health for the State of Illinois the hospital opened the center in August of . 1967 and currently stocks all of the more than twenty-three major vaccines and anti-toxin serums available through the state's Department of Health. RABIES VACCINE Harry J. Phelan, pharmacist in charge of the distribution center, stressed in a recent interview that the center stocks the rabies vaccine. The vaccine has a short expiration date so few private doctors or pharmacies will stock it. Anthony Corcoran, administrator of the McHenry hospital, emphasizes that county residents returning to the United States from international travel are required to have a small pox vaccination within three years of the date of re-entry to the U.S. in order to be admitted. He noted that physicians may obtain this vaccine from the distribution center in the hospital. Mr. Corcoran emphasized that the center will cooperate with any county group or organization who plan a com.-n;inity immunization program. He noted that the group should contact the center prior to its program to arrange for necessary materials. The imm inizations are provided by the state for those people whom the doctor decides need the immunizations but cannot afford to pay for them. The doctor may charge for his services and facilities but not for the vaccine or serums he has received from the Department of Health. The rapid availability of immunizations should encourage the physicians to administer a complete immunization program for every person under his care, with particular notice to students during their pre-school physicals this fall. COMMUNITY SERVICE The Biologies Distribution WATER-WELLS PUMPS O RED JACKET center is provided by the hospital as a community service to keep the immunization level of the community high, thus avoiding epidemics. The hospital of the community donates the facilities and refrigeration, plus the salary of the pharmacist during the time he must spend keeping written records, checking expiration dates each month and placing new orders. "The commonly used biologic is the tetanus toxoid. We use twenty bottles a month (200 injections) in the hospital's emergency room alone," Mr. Phelan noted. Mr. Phelan explained tl&t normal operating procedures call for the doctors to use their stock and then to replenish it with biologies from the center at the doctor's convenience. He added that special arrangements can be made in an emergency. The distribution center may be reached through the hospital's main telephone. The pharmacy is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. GOOD NEWS The existence of an active biologies center in McHenry county comes as good news to both residents and doctors alike, since this means faster care of suspected cases of comm ini cable diseases and more rapid prevention of their spread. Discovery of an active biologics distribution center came as good news also to Ward Duel, MPH, new administrator of McHenry County Department of Health. The department is located at 209 Benton street, Woodstock. Mr. Duel explained that the maintenance of the biologies center is normally the function of the county's health department and is usually kept in the department's offices. Mr. Duel is grateful to find the hospital is providing this public service and will use the hospital centef as the main *focus for distribution for the county to avoid duplication of services. Mr. Duel stressed that McHenry county adults need to be re-immunized for tetanus and smallpox if they have not had a booster in the required time limits. He also noted that many pre-school children do not have the complete immunization against polio and are susceptible "Parents should make sure their children have this protection," he said. * "A big need now is immun$» zations against measles, siirae not every parent has taken aa* vantage of the new vaccine that was made available in 1967," he added. An interesting side note is that when a high number of people have been immunized against a communicable disease the likelihood of those susceptible catching the disease is greatly reduced. If there is no rabies among animals then people of the area are relatively safe from this disease. "McHenry county had positive results on one fox and three skunks from tests in 1967", Mr. Duel warned. "He noted that most cases of rabies are received from wild animals like squirrels or skunks. Referring to smallpox, measles and polio, Mr. Duel stated that when a comm unity has less than 80 percent of its population protected against any one communicable disease, the community should promote inoculation programs.. As summer vacations are planned, the family should also plan to obtain the needed immunizations, especially now that they are more readily available through their physicians and the McHenry Biologies Distribution center in McHenry hospital which stands ready to meet his demands. County's Army Of 500 Aid '68 Cancer Crusade citizens were armed with the knowledge we have now -- and made use of the information available to them - we would save one out of every two victims," said May. "One of the biggest problems is to convince those who smoke how serious is the hacm they do their total health - heart, lungs, circulatory system, as well as to greatly increase the probability of cancer." May said he's often asked if a person who has been a heavy smoker stops improves his chances of avoiding cancer. Research shows the body had amazing recuperative powers and the damage is comparatively light if a person will stop smoking, he noted. Mrs. Kaye Crowell, area executive director, took part in the kickoff and called volunteers "dedicated, people who give more than they take -- each gives more than he can ever receive and does so willingly. The comfort you give others is a great reward," she added. John Orso, Crystal Lake, Northern Illinois Gas company executive, will head the industrial drive this year. Last year he raised only $1,530 through industries - $750 from only seven of the county's 212 in- • dustries! Orso is determined to produce more from a segment vitally affected by loss of time and executive leadership -the industrial complex of the county. The Cancer Crusade headed by Arnold May, right, is under way now through April 30. Dine with us on Amid reminders that their job is a distinctive opportunity to help others, McHenry county's army of 500 volunteers in the 1968 Cancer Crusade begin marching this week. Seventeen captains representing each of the county's seventeen townships is organizing volunteers to call on every home. Their goal is clear and two-fold! 1. Distribute information on the seven danger signals of cancer and tell people how to spot them. 2. Seek funds for the Cancer Crusade to carry on the work of the American Cancer society and the local unit in dozens of areas. In the border area, money goes for research (35%), public education (19%), personal services (18%), fund-raising(10%\ tim WEtSm administration (8%) and professional education (10%). "In the country, our chapter carries on extensive programs through out service committee, our memorials committee, our public education committee to take informational material to schools and groups, and our public relations committee to reach more people through news media, displays, and other areas," Arnold May, County Crusade chairman, said this Week. At the kickoff meeting, volunteers saw a film reminding them they serve as a major link between the research information and the potential cancer victim. By delivering the informational material, volunteers help close the gap. "We save one cancer vieout of three today.
