And many of you students take psychology courses at college because you relished the practical nature of this daily psychology column. Then you come back at me, as Molly is doing, because you are disappointed in the stodgy teaching and impractical courses! So test all psychology departments by the yardstick below! By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE F-538: Molly G., aged 19, is a college coed. "Dr. Crane," she protested, "when I was in high school I read your column every day, without fail. "For you made psychology so practical and useful that I decided to major in psychology when I entered college. "But I now have had two years of psychology at our state university, yet it is so dull and impractical that I am changing my major. "What is wrong? "The psychology that people really want is the sort our newspaper offers us every day via your column. "My daddy was a salesman and he devoured your column, too. And mother used it for discussion purposes at PTA and in Sunday School. "But the stuff they offer in college is so impractical that it is almost useless. Why?" APPLIED VS. THEORETICAL Molly's disappointment is shared by thousands of other college students. For they go to the university with great initial enthusiasm for psychology. They expect it to show them how to be popular. And how to carry on gay repartee. They look for aid in winning a mate and conducting a home successfully. Business and professional students also want to know how to sell or conduct advertising campaigns or write salable copy . etc. Alas, about seventy-five percent of the psychology professors are as pedantic and "braintrusterish" as the typical economics teacher. Fpr economics professors usually haven't operated a farm or store or bank or even apopcorn stand successfully, yet they pontificate learnedly about how Socialism surpasses our famous American "free enterprise" system. Ihvlike manner,the75percent of pedantic psychology professors have little grasp of practical needs. They lack "hdrse sense" or gumption. For only about 25 percent at most of psychology professors can make an interesting speech or talk turkey about sales and advertising problems. Many of them can't even rear their own children successfully or avoid divorce! At Ohio State university one of these theoretical psychologists who bitterly critized my daily column in the Citizen- Journal, not only had been divorced by his wife. But he was. so stupid he even listed that fact in his write-up in Who's Who! People with "horse sense" wouldn't flaunt their marital failure in that manner! Another Ohio State psychologists had a son who came to me for help in getting straightened out, because his academic dad was the usual professorial braintruster. And so it goes all over America. If you plan to enter college, with a glowing desire to study psychology, first be sure to analyze the catalogue of courses and see if these are offered: . "Applied Psychology" and "Sales Psychology" and "Advertising Psychology" and "Public Platform Psychology" and "Employment or Personnel Psychology", plus "Child Psychology" and "Marriage Psychology". If they are not listed, don't go to that college for your psychology major! It looks like the days of a good 5-cent candy bar for a dime are about gone, too.
