River Terrace drive, McHenry, has as its focal point at Easter time a lovely tree decorated with very special eggs decorated in a variety of ways. The tree itself is a small Thorn Apple, selected because the small prongs are sturdy and give good support to the delicate ornaments. It stands between 4 and 4Yi feet in height, extending in width to about 5 feet. Most of the ornaments are made of chicken eggs, but a few of the choice decorations are from the larger goose eggs. Each is carefully blown out after a hole is pierced in the bottom and top, while a few are cut on the side for scenes. _ There are animals of all sizes and descriptions, includat 1211 W. River Terrace drive, McHenry. This marks the seventeenth year the home has featured these unusual ornaments, which are made with painstaking care. PLAINDEALER PHOTO & Business, Community Service Outlined I Entries Open In r68 McHenry Queen Contest Six-Week Charm Training Program Will Start Soon Entries for the 1968 Miss McHenry contest are being accepted now, and toiay's paper carries a special coupon entry to assist candidates in entering. Plans call for a six-week charm course at no cost, presented as an integral part of the McHenry Chamber of Commerce- sponsored event. Dick Wilhelm. now chairman of the event, says main concern now is to obtain entries for the contest. Candidates may use the entry blank in the piper or they may obtain one at the Chamber of Commerce office or the McHenry State Bank. Frank Low, general chairman for the Marine Festival, will also have blanks at his office on Riverside drive. The new Miss McHenry will reign over Marine Festival activities in July. Deadlines for Miss McHenry entries is April 29, because the charm course instruction will begin that week and continue for six weeks. The contest, co-sponsored with the McHenry VFW and auxiliary, will be held about June 10. One oftheprizes is a trip to the big fair this summer in Texas. Another prize is the right to represent McHenry is the Miss McHenry County contest at the McHenry County Fair. To be eligible for the Miss McHenry contest, candidates must live in the McHenry high school district, furnish parent's written consent on the entry form and provide a photo for news use. FLARE GUN EXPLODES Michael Foran, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Foran of 3313 W. Broad street, sustained a seriously injured hand when a flare gun he found on the beach exploded in his hand Sunday evening. The high school freshman is being treated in McHenry hospital. Police chief Richard Clark said a 12-gauge shot gun shell was carried in the gun, which was intended to have no larger than a 10-gauge shell. Sparks announced this week that the deadline for filing personal property tax schedules has been advanced to May 1. The assessor's office is now open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon to assist the public. Cooperation in meeting this deadline, set ahead one month from last year, is appreciated. Inspections of foiod service establishments, including restaurants, taverns, markets, groceries and similar places of business started last week in the McHenry community. In charge of the inspection is John Raber, who is carrying on the program in cooperation with the city of McHenry. Hie initial inspections in recent days will be followed by a complete coverage of the community. Many follow-up inspections are also anticipated. GOOD FRIDAY STORE HOURS The Chamber of Commerce retail committee recommends that McHenry business firms be closed from noon to 3 p.m. on Good Friday. REELECT DEAN BOARD CHAIRMAN Walter Dean was selected by a unanimous vote of the County Board of Supervisors to serve as chairman for another year. Action was taken Tuesday morning at the regular meeting. By a vote of 13 to 11, the board approved placing the fairgrounds site on the November ballot for voter approval as a site for a new court house. The board ordered the County Treasurer to issue anticipation warrants, one in the amount of $6,000 for Mental Health and the other totalling $15,000 for the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. President John Shay. The Declaration of Purpose of the Green Street Mall, Inc., states: "In the belief that the health of a community depends upon the strength of its business sector, the Green Street Mall, Inc., has been formed to pool and coordinate the talents, skills, energies and resources of local businesses. NOTICE Because of difficulty with the city well equipment at the pumping station on Green street it is necessary to use the auxiliary station near the ci% hall for the next few days. OPEN DISASTER CONTRIBUTION CENTER IN AREA A center to collect donations of non-perisable food and clothing for the homeless and needy victims of the Chicago disaster has been established in McHenry at 1218 N. Green Street. This center sponsored by the Green St. Mall, Inc., will be open daily through Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to receive contributions. The collected items will be taken into Chicago by volunteers. BUNNIES ENTER SPIRIT OF C OF C EASTER PROMOTION McHenry families, in particular the younger members, are looking forward to the 1968 Easter promotion planned by the Gity's Chamber of Commerce. Two large Easter bunnies will be circulating throughout the business areas on Friday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 7 to 9 o'clock and also on Saturday, April 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. They will be distributing candy to children. McHenry churches are planning numerous rites during Holy Week, culminating with special services on Easter Sunday, April 14. ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC On Holy Thursday, there will be low Masses at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., followed by a Concelebrated Mass of Institution and Procession at 8 p.m. There will be adoration until midnight and Friday morning. The Good Friday service consists of scripture service at noon, Stations of the Cross at 1 p.m. scripture service at 2 p.m., solemn liturgy and Communion at 3 p.m. and Stations at 7:33 in the evening. There will be no morning or public devotions on Holy Saturday during the day. The solemn liturgy and blessings will begin at 10:45 p.m. followed by a Concelebrated Mass of Easter at m'dnight. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC The Holy Thursday morning Mass at St. Patrick's Catholic church will be at 7 a.m. and there will be a Concelebrated Mass at 7:30 in the evening. Eucharist adoration will follow from 9 p.m. through the night and until 5 o'clock Friday evening. CM Good Friday, the liturgical service of the Passion and Death of the Lord will take place at 5:30 p.m. concluding about 6:45. Statioas of the Cross will follow at 8 p.m. The Easter vigil service will be at 11 p.m., centering around the Easter candle, which represents Christ. At midnight will be the celebration ofthe Mass of the Easter vigil. Sunday Masses will be at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, 9:45, 11 and 12:15.
