Fiske introduced Ken Hinckley, soil scientists with the Soil Conservation service of the United States Department of Agriculture and John Quay, executive secretary of the McHenry County Plan commission. All three agencies are cooperating in the mammoth task, soon to be completed, of mapping all the land in McHenry county. Fiske showed how the soil within a certain section of land is interpreted for building foundations, septic systems, flooding potential and agricultural land use. That section is then colored in on a large map designating good, fair or poor for each of the above categories. The maps are then used by individuals, corporations, industry, formers or anyone who is interested. Fiske pointed out that the real value is in the use of these maps by the county's Plan commission. Quay, in his remarks, stated that the results of such a project will be a tremendous asset in outlining future plans in all areas for McHenry county. For example, only that land best suited for agriculture will be used as such; industry can be located in places other than on prime agricultural land but also out of areas not suited for septic systems and foundation structure. REFERENDUM PLANNED This November the citizens of Illinois will vote on a billion dollar referendum for water- related recreation, water and air pollution, flood control, water management and water supply. This amount of a billion dollars meets the needs of the state through 1980 and prepares the way for a flexible long - range program through the year 2020. Chairman Fiske stressed that the money, is badly needed in this area and that a comprehensive plan for putting the money to use has been established. They are preparing for their annual concert to be staged at the high school auditorium which promises to be one of the outstanding musical events of the year. The sheriff came over from Woodstock last week and discovered a still inthe Ben Brown farm between this city and Woodstock. The barn was well equipped with machinery and apparatus and was capable of putting out a large quantity of the forbidden liquor. The farm is now owned by a Mr. Smith of Chicago. Two truck loads of sugar were found at the farm ready for use. The flu seems to have taken a fresh hold in this community and many cases of illness has been reported the last week sometimes with two or three in a family being ill at one time. The members of the D.H.G. club and their wives pleasantly surprised Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Bassett at their home on Main street. A delicious steak dinner was served by the men at 7 o'clock after which an enjoyable evening was spent at cards, music and receiving of election returns over the radio and by telephone. Mr. and Mrs. Mat Steffes and family are moving this week into their new home on Washington street. He took the part of a radio operator in a float made up of the technical training department. Mrs. Zena Bacon received a telegram Saturday night containing the news that her son, Marshall, was seriously injured in action in the North African sea and that reports will be forwarded as received. The telegram was sighed by Ulie, adjutant general of the U.S. Army. The first aid training film of the American Red Cross "Before the Doctor Comes" was shown before a large audience in Spring Grove at the town hall on Monday night. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 3, 1958) Margaret Adams Hafner of Grass Lake and Peter Adams, Sr., of Richmond are twins and they are former Johnsburg residents, celebrated their seventy- eighth birthday anniversary March 22. Both are in fair health and active. The twins were born in Kehrig, Germany, and came here with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Adams, when they were seven months old. The family settled at Johnsburg living in a log cabin. Miss May Noonan, 80, a lifelong resident of this area died March 27. Chris Maley of Chicago, who just celebrated his ninety-first birthday anniversary, spent the weekend with his grandson, Dr. John Goetschel, in McHenry, where a party was held in his honor. Mr. Maley, retired head of the cotton department of Bauer and Black, is well known in this community where he has visited for forty years and now spends his summers.
