Some 6,600 striking operators, clerks and others are represented by the Communications Workers of America (AFL- CIO) which has rejected "the highest wage offer ever made to these bargaining units". "Also many of the 11,800 Illinois Bell craftsmen, represented by the International Brotherhood of - Electrical Workers (AFL-CIO) are honoring CWA picket lines. The IBEW, too, has rejected a record wage offer for its members." "Employees of the Telephone Commercial Employees union also are honoring the picket lines, and supervisory personnel have been as signed to handle calls in the local business office." It is estimated that 133 Illinois Bell employees are refusing to work in the Woodstock, McHenry, Crystal Lake, Harvard, Marengo, and Union areas. "Customer-dialed local and long distance calls are going through without anyproblems," Illinois Bell Chief Operator Margaret Barton said, "There may be delays on calls requiring an operator -- such as "Information' and person-toperson -- but management people are working hard to fill the gap. Naturally we're giving special attention to emergency calls and to services requiring essential operations, such as fire and police, the military, doctors, and hospitals." Local Manager Stan Jozwiak pointed out that Illinois Bell's service is 100 percent dial and that 99 percent of its 2.9 million customers can dial their oton long distance calls. "The telephone network can function smoothly indefinitely", Jozwiak said. "We do sag- . gest that customers can help themselves get faster service by looking for the number in the telephone book first." WED., APR., 24, 1968- PLAINDEALER - PG. 3 PPlIipi FRIENDLY VISIT . . .
