( PG. 8, - PLAINDEALER - FR1., APR., 26, 1968 iifi Cii I? Q. What can I do. when I get too much salt in my soup or gravy? A. Counteract it by adding a teaspoonful of sugar and a tea spoonful of vinegar, and then cooking it a little longer. Or, drop in a whole peeled raw potato and let it cook awhile, then remove the potato before serving. In the case of thick soup or gravy, grate the raw potato and let it stay. In fact, grated potato can be used to thicken a soup when necessary. > Q. How can I cope with a kitchen drain that has become stopped up with grease? A. Often you can melt this grease by holding an electric iron, turned to its hottest point against the drainpipe at the trap. Then allow the hot water faucet to run for several minutes. Q. How can I improvise a hair shampoo when I find that Pm out of the real thing? A. Hubby's shaving cream makes a very good lather for the hair. Try it. Q. What can I do about some honey that has become grainy? A. Set the container in a saucepan of hot water, with a couple of sticks of wood under the container to keep the water circulating under it, and let it stand for several hours. Keep the water hot, but not boiling, Memories Mrs. Kathryn Wagner of 1612 Flower street, McHenry, recently submitted a verse, "Snow Carnival" to the Poet's Corner. She now stirs memories with her comments on the old fashion charivari. NOCTURNAL AMUSEMENT By Kathryn Wagner This morning shortly before daylight I was awakened by one of the infernalist noises I ever heard. It was nearby, I soon surmised - this is no bird, nor was it a serenade by a lover in a spirit of gallantry under my window box. It was produced by a charivari - or shivaree to be less arty - paying their respects to a couple of lovers who recently deigned to marry then taken up lodgings ait Hotel Prairie. Upon ^dng out I discovered a party of youths, a majority of whom had a bovine trophy in each hand rattling away with all their might to a tune of "Wanting to Know you Tonite"; the balance were engaged in discoursing music upon an instrument known as a horse fiddle. This primitive musical wonder consists simply of a pine goods box, first upon one corner then upon the other. The noise does not resemble anything in space, on earth or underground but a little of all the outlandish noises combinded. These noices started an impromptu of "The Fox River Blues" by all the dogs, cows, and goats in town which could be heard in every direction; altogether pandemonium was thrown completely into the shade around - the band played on. At dawn of day these highly skilled entertainers evaporated. This gave the dogs, cows goats and people a chance to take a short nap before breakfast - belated. In the course of the proceedings the boys found their way into the room of the couple of whose benefit they were exercizing , DO-RE-MI, but the occupants had taken refuge in another part of Hotel Prairie. (This custom to herald a pair of lovers on the sea of matrimony is still practiced in many parts of the world). Smilly's Auto Topics by George Smith A DOG TALE One of our regulars at Smitty's Sinclair Service drove in with his jallopy, and filling up the rear seat was the biggest dog you ever saw. This fellow is pretty good natured so we kidded him about the pooch. Asked him if it was part pony, and where was the saddle. He grinned, and answered, "When you got nine kids, like I do, and you get'em a dog, you get one big enough so they can all play with it at once." Adv. LICENSE PLATE SERVICE < > and the honey should return to normal. Q. What is a mixture I can prepare for the removal of old paint and varnish from woodwork? A. Apply with a rag a mixture of two parts of spirits of ammonia and one of turpentine. In difficult places, apply with a handbrush. Don't forget the sandpaper when removing paint or varnish. Q. How can I remove some grease spots from wallpaper? A. Apply a paste of fuller's earth and water, allow to remain overnight, then brush lightly off in the morning. Q. How can I remedy the figures which have become undistinguishable on the dials of appliances, such as the radio, TV, oven, or typewriter keys? A. Take a child's crayon, rub it across the dial, rub off the excess, and the numbers will show up clearly. A little white shoe polish can be used in the same manner. Q. How can I avoid tarnish when storing silverware for awhile? A. Rub the silver well with olive oil, then wrap in some old table linen. The silver will not tarnish, but of course it should be washed in hot water before using it again. Q. How can I make a good orange cocktail for breakfast? A. Beat together %ctq> orange juice, one egg yolk, a pinch of salt, and enough honey to sweeten. Chill in'the refrigerator if desired. Q. How can I renovate a dull patent leather bag, or other patent leather article? A. By rubbing thoroughly with milk, then polishing with a dry cloth. 2ND The only wagon 'is" " YS TO SAVE SALE ENDS SAT., APRIL *9 (14 to choose from) (They re Ford's Magic Doorgate Swings owt fik® 3 <iaof of down tike a tailgate, .
