McHenry 385-0434 Kiwanis Offers Scholarship The Kiwanis Club of McHenry has established a $400 scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior from McHenry Community High school in order to perpetuate what the Kiwanians feel is one of their main goals, aiding needy children. By requiring the recipient to major in special education or teacher education, this goal will be met more fully than in the past. Also, the Kiwanians feel that by making money aviulable to the student in the second quartile (25%-50%) of his graduating class, they are aiding the student who is worthy but i s often overlooked and in need of assistance. Hie deadline for receiving applications will be May 15. The committee will review applications to be sure the six rules for applying are met. The committee will make their final decisions on character, leadership and future goals as recorded on the application forms and recommended by the senior counselor. The winner andalternate will be announced by a member of the scholarship committee on Honors and Awards Day at the McHenry high school. If the winner uses only part of the scholarship, the remainder will go to the alternate ( in the event the winner drops out of school). The rules for applying are as follows': The applicant: 1. Must be a graduating senior boy or girl of McHenry Community high school. 2. Must be in the upper half but not in the upper quarter of his class. ^"3. Must be accepted to a college or university. (4. Must beplanningonmajoriijjg in special feducation or teacher education (mentally or physically handicapped curriculum). ^ 5. Must not be^tr child of a member of the Kiwanis club of McHenry. 6. Must submit his or her application along with an official transcript, by May 15 tothe Kiwanis club of McHenry. Applications may be obtained from William Perry, senior counselor at the high school, or any Kiwanis member. The Kiwanis club of McHenry has had a scholarship program for many years. Since the rules for awarding the scholarship have not seemed to accomplish the purpose the club had intended, a study was conducted. As a result of this evaluation, the present rules were set up to more fully fulfill the intent of the program.
