News About Our Servicemen ;al Corner s* GOP CORN ROAST Dundee township Republicans, supporting Illinois' title as the country's leading corn producer, will sponsor a corn roast in East Dundee oil Saturday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The corn roast, which has become a popular annual event, will be held in the picnic grove adjacent to Santa's village at Illinois Routes 72 and 25. The day has been described as a day of family fun, with special admission rates for the amusement park and free corn provided by Rep. John B. "Jack'1' Hill, West Dundee and Senator Dennis Collins of De- Kalb. The picnic is expected to attract large numbers of enthusiastic Republicans in this election year, 1968. Scheduled to attend are Senator Everett M. Dirksen, fresh from his convention duties in Miami; Rep. Hill, Senator Collins and other elected officials. Rep. Hill said, "I hope McHenry County Republicans of the 32nd and 33rd districts will join us on the seventeenth to give our senior Senator of Illinois a rousing welcome. Ulterior Communications Electrician Fireman Apprentice John E. Cusack, USN, 20, s$n of Mr. and Mrs* Thomas E. Cusack of 3005 N. Oakwood' drive, McHenry, is serving aboard the U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer USS Waddell, As a member of the crew, he recently departed for operations with the Seventh Fleiet in the Western Pacific. During the operations, the Waddell will serve as flagship for Commander Destroyer Division 32. The Waddell is a new guided missile destroyer, equipped with the latest; weapons system, ft will help to provide support to US and Allied shore units in Vietnam. Seaman Apprentice Daniel W. Zavesky, USN, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dangler of 3115 Greenleaf drive, in Wonder Lake, has returned to Mayport, Fla, aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Shangrila following an eight and onehalf month deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. As a crew member, he welcomed several dignitaries during the time including Secretary of the Navy Paul R. Ignatius and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. The huge mobile airfield also made several television appearances as newsmen the world over came aboard Shangri-la to watch and record at-sea operations. While in the Mediterranean, Shangri-la was operating with the U.S. Sixth Fleet ami during the month of June, the carrier participated in the Sixth Fleet0 s 20th anniversary celebration. Marine Gunnery Sergeant Glenn G. Waltrip, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen G. Waltrip, of Mylith Park, McHenry, and husband of the former Miss Ethel Troutman, Lexington, Ky., is . serving with the Fifth Communication Battalion of the Force Logistic Command (FLC) in '> South Vietnam. * As a member of the battalion, he helps maintain and install every type of communications equipment from a field radio to a complicated telephone system. The FLC is the biggest support and support outfit in Marine corps history. The command provides logistic support to more than 80,000 Marines plus other U.S. and Allied forces in the I Corps area of South Vietnam. Warrant Officer Candidate Gordon H. Anderson, Jr., 19, whose father lives at 7506 Cypress drive, Wonder Lake, completed a helicopter pilot course recently at the Army Primary Helicopter school, Ft. Wolters, Texas. During the 16 week course he was trained to fly Army helicopters and learned to use them in tactical maneuvers. He next will undergo advanced flight training at the Army Aviation school, Ft. Upon completion of advanced training he may be appointed a warrant officer. Marine Sergeant Robert A. Foss, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold T. Foss at 128 S. Sheridan road, McHenry, is serving with the First Marine division in South Vietnam. As a member of the division he helps capture or destroy enemy forces. During large and small scale operations he is supported by tanks, artillery amphibian tractors and engineers. \ His unit is also engaged in a civic action prograny designed to assist the Vietnamese people in completing ^elf-help projects, such as the building of wells, culverts, small bridges and schools* Equipment and materials are made available through the Marine Corps Reserve Civic Action fund. Radioman Third Class Kenneth J. Montrose, USN, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Montrose of 2508 S. Kenilworth avenue, McHenry, has just completed a six-month deployment in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of North Vietnam aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga. As a crew member, he helped to provide air support to UJS. and Allied grotmd forces ashore in South Vietnam. He also helped to provide the necessary support to the squadron of Air Wing 19 so that they could fly combat missions against the enemy.
