WEb,f AUG., Z\, 1968 - PLAINPEALER - PG. 7 FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 16, 1968) School will open Sept. 4 with new instructors at the high school with the exception of Mr. Willis. The outboard motor boats are gaining in popularity in this locality and early this season headquarters fpr these boats was established in the Mat Weber building on Riverside drive. Ferris and Swineheart are the proprietors of this new business established on the tanks of the Fox River and they carry a full line of the Elto outboard motors. The McHenry band will give a concert at Woodstock this Thursday evening. The band will be directed by Profl Sears. The class of 1927 of the McHenry Community high school held a reunion last Saturday evening. The class c6mprised of about twenty couples chartered the "Gladola" from the Hunter Boat company and enjoyed a trip along the Fox river and Pistakee Bay. Dancing on the boat enroute added to the zest of the party. A sumptuous steak dinner at the Bald Knob hotel was waiting them when they arrived. The members of McHenry chapter, Order of the Eastern Star are invited to attend a picnic given by McHenry Lodge, No* 158, A.F. & A.M. in Roy Harrison's woods Aug. 19. Bring a basket lunch. TWENTY - FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 19 1943) Rural youth members of McHenry county enjoyed a picnic on Sunday Aug. 15 at Sportsmen's park, east of Woodstock. Besides members and their families, 4-H club members and their families and Home Bureau members and their families were also present. Peggy Jenner of Crystal Lake was chosen as the outstanding camper at the annual 4-H camp held at Camp Olivet on Lake Geneva recently. One hundred fourteen girls attended this year. The nine camp directors were Clara Graves Sweeny, the general director; Shirley Neal and Rita Tony an of McHenry, Doris Thomas of Ringwood; Lulu Adams of Harvard; Emma Schneidewind of Woodstock; Leda Clark of Woodstock, Ruth Lace of Algonquin; and Mrs. Charles Uronk of Elgin. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 7, 1958) An annual picnic for residents of Bethany Old People's Home in Chicago was held last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pritz at Emerald Park. About 100 people including nurses and doctors were brought here by the Ravenswood Kiwanis on invitation of the Pritzes who provided boat rides and furnished refreshments for the group. The new Zion Evangelical Lutheran church, located on Route 120, west of McHenry, will be dedicated Aug. 10. Photography h Cjaytord The Recommended Photographer McHenry 385-0170 / Cullom Lake, John Smith, whose father is herdsman at Northern Pump farms, walked off with the grand champion steer award over all three classes - 4-H, F.F.A. and open at the McHenry county fair. A 15 year old Pistakee Highlands youth, Jerry Phillips, was reported in critical condition Tuesday evening after surgery performed earlier in the day. The young man suffered a broken neck and paralysis over a portion of his body as the result of diving into shallow water. Rural residents of McHenry county can now be given an address that will make it possible to find them almost as accurately as city residents. This is made possible by the sale and distribution of the new official McHenry county road map. Robert George Nowak, 18, of Rt. 1, McHenry, was killed Aug. 2 in a car accident on the Spring Grove road. The bigger a man's head gets, the easier it is to fill his shoes.
