Hughes brings a basket of cones to Mrs. Terry A. Anderson both of the "Coners" club of the Women's auxiliary of Memorial Hospital for McHenry county. The cones will be used for small trees; will be cut into "cone zinnies" and will have even some of the pieces used as small skiis for pine and nut figures, all to be sold on Holiday Hospitality Day Wednesday, Oct. 2. Evelyn Hughes is a dedicated supplier of Princess Pine cones, ground moss and walks the shores of a friend's Wisconsin resort lake picking up all manner of things which become important items for some of Mrs. Charles Wright's miniatures and Mrs. Irwin Burger's wreaths. All of Mrs. Hughes' friends sympathize with her efforts and come home from vacation with their cars willed with bags of cones, etc. Any of the auxiliary workers will agree that ifs certainly not safe to be the friend of a "Coner". s T)he C linic Heed Lola's wise criticism, for many thoughtless mothers saddle their children with names that make the youngsters actually neurotic! And don't try bizarre spellings or fancy sounding syllables! Instead, select - names that inspire the children tp emulate those who bore such rtitunes in ancient times. f<By - George W. Crane, Ph. 1).,.M.D. CASE G-549: Lola G., aged 28 - Is a school teacher. "Dr. Crane," she protest- 4«fl, "I wish you'd warn young Jj mothers to use better psycholf-. ogy when they name their sons! "For example, I had a boy in the second grade whose doting mamma christened him 'Lena'. ^Imagine the ridicule andtea- *3$fag he receives from his classrtesl "W-' "Why don't mothers look aiteard and thus give their sons - strong, masculine names?" FOOLISH MAMMA Lola's point should wake up /"'many foolish mammas. | For many boys, slender and $*not very athletic, already have "a tough job trying to make their -pals respect them, without being hampered by a sissy name. Yet I have known men who /•were christened "Evelyn" and Phyllis". -Z' In past years, uneducated mofliers at our Cook County hospital here in Chicago would become enamoured of fancy metr^ ttcal terms and thus ignorantly C'name their babies accordingly. • One such mother thus want- **ed to name her twin daughters ^•Syphilis" and "Gonorrhea", because those words sounded mysterious and exotic! /J,- Another one heard the atpending physician use the word "Meconium", which refers to ^ ihe fecal matter discharged by the newborn baby,, and thus wished to name her infant daughter, "Meconium". ,<*" Such medical names probably 4 pouldn't cause too much har- £ assment since many people • ^ wouldn't know what they meant, anyway. . But to saddle a boy with such / monickers as "Lena" or"Eve- | lyn" or "Phyllis" is sheer «j cruelty. Such boys then may try to acquire rough and tough nicknames, quch as "Spike" or "Butch" or even "Fatso". Sometimes they become unduly fat, just due to their frustration. In 1967, some of our hospitals reported that the most popular names for girl babies were "Lisa" and "Michelle" with "Michael" being the favorite for boys. Many mothers thus go overboard for fancy sounding names instead of picking those that may inspire youngsters to live up to the high attainments of great men of the past. The Biblical names of Philip, Andrew, Peter, Thomas, James, and John, Matthew, David, Daniel, Mark andLuke are both inspiring and masculine. So are Franklin, Anthony, Calviit William, George, Arthur, Alfred, etc. Mothers, please don't saddle your children with "lightweight" names and those that you merely spell in bizarre fashion, just to be different! Many of you parents are more juvenile than your babies in the ignorant way you try to christen your infants! Consider these girls' names and their meanings: Abigail - Joy Agatha - Kind Alice - Truth Amy - Beloved Celeste - heavenly . Clara - Bright Cora - Maiden Deborah - Bee Diana - Goddess Flora - Flowers Florence - Prosperity Hilary - Merry Iris - Rainbow Judith - Praised Martha - Lady Nadine - Hope Naomi - Sweetness Regina - Queen Stella - A star Sophia - Wisdom (Always write to Dr. Crane in care of this newspaper, enclosing a self address stamped envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.)
