This will be the second year the Citizen's Advisory council has been in operation, and it is hoped that many newpersons will join those ^0 participated in the discussions and studies last year. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 4,1928) Mr. and Mrs. Albert W. Frett celebrated their forty-fifth anniversary of their marriage at their home Sept. 30. See the Rayfield oil burner on display at the H.E. BUch & Co., store on Riverside drive. Rev. William CPRourke, pastor of St. Patrick's church, narrowly escaped serious injuries Monday afternoon when his car tipped over into a ditch just east of McHenry. A beautiful $40,000 home is being built on the Hollenbeck estate at Pistakee Bay which will be one of the show places of that locality. Miss Nellie McDonald is enjoying a vacation from Brown's drug store at Ringwood. Mrs. Leslie Olson of McHenry is working in her place. The McHenry Masonic lodge entertained the members of Legion lodge of Chicag( at a special meeting Saturday evening. The visitors were treated to a boat trip up the river and a- , round Pistakee Bay in the afternoon and upon their return to the hall sat down to a chicken dinner served by a committee of Masonic members. The first school in the village of McHenry was taught in 1840 by Miss McOmber in a small log house on the bank of the Fox River. This was also the first school house buflt in the township. It served its purpose for many years and was afterwards converted into a store. Another school was conducted in a log house belonging to Mr. McCullom, the father of Mrs. Samantha Button of this city. This was situated on the Sherman farm west of McHenry. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct, 7, 1943) Joyce Schmidtke, a victim of infantile paralysis, was removed from an iron lung in St. Hierese hospital, Waukegan, after seven weeks spent in. the artificial respirator, ft is reported that she is improving and that there are good chances of the recovery of the Spring Grove girl. She died at her home in Chicago. Mrs. Carl Patzke and family moved last weekend from the B.J. Adams house at the end of fourth street to the lower flat in the M.E. parsonage. Another telegram, like only three others received in McHenry during the past two years, arrived Sunday afternoon telling of the death of another local service man. Hie telegram arrived at the Harry Fredricks' home on Waukegan street casting a grim shadow over the home and its remaining family as well as over the entire community. Eugene Michael Weideman, a petty officer radio man, second class, died of wounds following action while in the performance of duty and in service of his country. The University of Illinois, Division of University Extension, is interested in conductions a course in Engineering Drafting in McHenry in cooperation with the United States office of Education. Persons interested in the course get in touch with Mr. Mclntyre at the high school. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 25, 1958) TTie WJS.C.S. of the Community Methodist church is sponsoring a country barn rummage sale at Engdahl* s Fairwood farm on south Green street. An estimated crowd of 2,500 spectators crowded onto Mc- Cracken field to witness the first home game of the season and the dedication of the field. The program which also featured presentation of a new public address system by McHenry Rotary was held at half time of the game. Leonard J. McCracken, coach, teacher and more recently athletic director, a member of the local high school system for more than thirty years, was guest of the evening* A brother and sister, Stephen H. Freund and Mrs. Gertrude Davis, are observing their anniversaries, ninety-fourth and eighty-third respectively, Sept. 26. McHenry friends of the late Dr. Edwin Meyer and of his widow, Mrs. Frances Meyer, who resides on Fox street, were happy with an announcement of the appointment of Archbishop Albert Meyer of Milwaukee as successor to Cardinal Stritch in Chicago. The archbishop was a first cousin of the late Dr. Meyer. A ,band of nearly 5,000 members will cover the fielu of Northwestern university's Dyche stadium at half time of the Northwestern yorsus Washington stats^ college football game Oct. 27. The band will be made up of sixty-three nearby Illinois high school bands, including the McHenry band, directed by Paul R. Yanda. Rauen of Mc;/ Henry, - state director of tKe savings bonds division/of the Department of the Treasury.
