Ron Santo And Glenn Bedkert To Speak At Elks Banquet Bigger Ones Are Getting Away! The Annual Sports Night Dinner conducted by the Woodstock Elks Lodge will be held this year on Tuesday, October 29th at the Lodge Hall and will feature two very important players in the Chicago Cubs drive to capture the National League Flag and World Champion title. The speakers for the evening will be Captain Ron Santo, the Cubs Third Baseman, and Glenn Beckert, the Cubs Second Baseman. Santo, who graduated from Franklin High School is Seattle in 1959 has played professional ball ever since receiving his diploma. His capabilities as a player, both in the field and at the plate,were recognized at once, and in only his second year he already had moved into the starting lineup of the Cubs. Since 1960 Santo has gone on to set many records, both in the Cub record book and also the National and Major League. Just to mention a few, he has led the Chicago Cubs in every category offensively and defensively he broke an all-time major league assist record for third basemen with 391 in one year and turned right around and broke his own record with 393 assists the following year. He has also broken one of the oldest standing records in the major leagues by leading in six consecutive years breaking Pie Traynor's record of five. In 1967 Ron received more honors when 18 or 20 writers recommended him thru their votes for the MVP Award. He came in third with 103 points which is the highest a Cub player has received in recent years. He was awarded the Houston Athletic Association Eddie Player award and also has received the Cub Player of the Year award. Ron was born February 25th, 1940, is married, has two fine children, and now makes his home in Park Ridge, Illinois. Glenn Beckert, who also was born in 1940, also hails from Park Ridge and is married. Glenn also has set many records since he joined the Cubs from the Red Sox Organization via the first-year player draft irt 1962. He is always among the top ten toughest hitters to strike out. In 67 he struck out only 36 times in 656 times at bat, and in 68 he bettered his record. He is considered one of the hardest batters to pitch to with runners on base due to his tremendous ability to hit behind the runners into right field. Beckert's fielding record is also on par with his tremendous improvement at the plate. He was 2nd in the League in assists for a second baseman, 3rd in putouts, and 3rd in doubleplays. Mr. William J. GENE FREUND By Eve Levesque A large mouth black bass, weighing five and three quarter pounds and measuring 22 inches, was caught in McCullom Lake last Sunday by Gene Freund, of the village. This was the largest of a string of four bass, for a total of about 12 pounds. With his latest conquest, Mr. Freund breaks his own fish derby records. Twice he was top man during the annual McCullom Lake fish derby s, held in the winter. The fourth annual event has already been scheduled. A "bent pin, piece of string, and boll weevils" are Gene's formula for his fantastic piscatorial success! Seriously, young Freund would not reveal either the time of day or materials used to draw up his prizes. He also stated on Sunday, during the interview, that even Drove way down to Peoria last weekend and didn't see any heavy traffic until we arrived home in McHenry. Maybe we shouldn't have laughed -- so hard. as Hutchinson, Weiss, McGibbon and Oeffling grabbed off the first four places, and Leo Thompson finished the scoring with a 7th place finish. Other young Warriors whoparticipated were Seaton, Code, France, Hendricks, Blake, Rojer, Koerber, Claypool, Pohlman and Moran. So the fosh-scph squad continues to emulate their older teammates string of success as once again the Warriors have crunched another opponent and remain undefeated in dual meets for the season. So once again the Warriors showed all concerned that their team power and strnegth must be reckoned with in the remaining few contests of what has turned out to be a fantastic season. The frosh-soph squad finished third, one point out of second but Keith Hutchinson ran away from the field in a time of 15:21 to grab the blue ribbon at 27 seconds over the second place finisher. Eric Weiss pulled in 7th, followed by John Oeffling, 10th, Terry McGibbon 15th and John Seaton in 23rd. However the Warriors couldn't match the team strength of Crystal Lake who won the meet going away with 38 points to 55 for Woodstock and 56 for McHenry.
