PG. 14, -PLAIN DEALER - FR1., FEB. 9, 1968 Cancer Society Meets To Map 1968 Area Crusade Aware that smoking is claiming too many cancer victims, members of the McHenry county chapter of the American Cancer society met last week to map the 1968 Cancer Crusade. One method the board is using to tell about the dangers of smoking is through educational. tools available to schools and civic groups. Mrs. A.B. Mc- Connell, Jr., heads the education unit. Films are available to help generate awareness on the basic dangers of smoking. Meanwhile, other forms of cancer are claiming victims, and the McHenry county unit of the A.C.S. is hurrying efforts to raise funds to help support a large research program. Last year's McHenry County Cancer Crusade, with Bill Tammeus as chairman raised $13,227. While this is less than the amount raised in previous years, the Cancer Crusade was handicapped with public attention focused on referendums concerning the Mental Health center and the Junior college last year -- both worthwhile community causes whidi hare been resolved with favorable voter action. A review of Cancer Crusade efforts last year shows that rural contributions in the smaller communities matched or exceeded their 1966 total during the 1967 Cancer Crusade. Arnold May, chairman of the McHenry county chapter, said he will spearhead the 1968 Cancer Crusade because he and his committee have been unable to find anyone willing to assume the job. However, he, requested the board to authorize him to appoint a committee at once to start the search now for a Cancer Crusade chairman in 1969, and the board readily" agreed. Raising funds and distribution of information to citizens is a major responsibility of the organization. The Cancer Crusade is unique from many similar fund drives because workers have a dual role--that of giving their neighbors information on cancer's seven danger signals and inviting them to participate in the fund drive. Actually, awareness of the seven danger signals help many people spot signs of cancer early. Mrs. Carol Cooney, of McHenry, memorial chairman. pointed^ out that the county funeral directors have suitable gift envelopes for persons who wish to make a donation in memory of a person who has died. Mrs. Cooney also noted that persons may make donations to the Cancer society even though no formal memorial has been established. „ "The desire to honor someone with a living memorial can be fittingly carried out through a gift to the Cancer society, and the donation may be mailed to me at McHenry," she said. It may be left with funeral directors who know the procedures in getting in touch with Mrs. Cooney. Since October memorials have brought in $261 to the McHenry county unit of the American Cancer society, and this fund will be turned over to the research and public education efforts of the A.C.S. Mrs. Frank Gregory of McHenry, service chairman, said her committee is servicing two patients, in Harvard and one in Woodstock with bandages now. She said the stockroom at the V.F.W . building in Woodstock has a supply of bandages but that a bandage group is needed in Crystal Lake. This committee helps furnish bandages and other necessary supplies for persons who are victims of cancer. Others Participate Guest Of Math Classes s&5|p| -A • • Eggs are easy to cook. Under one of Illinois* new gun laws, the seller must withhold delivery, for the 72 hour waiting period, j The law is designgtf to discourage the impulse purchaseand use-of guns. In this way, according to the Illinois State > Bar association, the lawmakers hope to prevent crimes of passion and such crimes as suicide and those resulting from mental depression. Categories of persons who may not purchase guns under any circumstances include: --No one under 18 may purchase a pistol; --Young people under 21, if convicted for any misdemeanor other than a traffic offense; or adjudged delinquent; --Narcotic addicts; --Anyone convicted of a felony under the laws of Illinois or any other state within the previous five years or confined to a penitentiary within the same period; --Anyone who has been a patient in a mental institution within the past five years; --The mentally retarded. Since a dealer shall not knowingly sell a gun to any such person, he has a moral responsibility to make some reasonable inquiry into the background of any would-be purchaser, the bar group states. However, when the new gun registration law goes into effect July 1, 1968, the primary responsibility for determining the eligibility of gun-owners the class on what to expect and prepare for as college freshmen. will rest with the Department of Public Safety. The department will issue a Firearm Owner's Identification Card only to those applicants who do not fit any of the categories of those prohibited by law from acquiring or possessing firearms. Also, no applicant under 21 years old will be issued a permit except with the written consent of a parent or guardian who holds a valid Firearm Owner's ID card. Anyone who buys or carries any firearm or ammunition without having a registration card will be subject to a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment up to one year or both. The ISBA stresses that the, 72-hour waiting period applies equally to the sale of guns by private owners. Even an antique gun, capable of being fired or of being made serviceable^falls within the terms of this waiting period and, after July 1, may not be transferred to a person who does not have a Firearm Owner's ID"card.
