We reserve the right to delete any material which we consider libelous or in objectionable taste.) l<" SCHOOL FACTS "Dear Mrs. Nettie Sarley, and all others who write without knowing the facts: «I am a little sick of citizens who take pot-shots at the school system with little knowledge of what they are talking about, and with no conceit of its effect on the public. Any intelligent investigation of the facts would have proved the class si£e^ in all our schools. "If you really want the facts, all our schools are open to the public. School board meetings are also open to the public and if this is not convenient enough our administration office at 39- 2? W. Main street, is open for information by telephone or for personal interviews by appointment. The telephone number is 385-7210. /•Now to Mrs. Sarley's 'other side of the picture'. S'FACT 1. We now have many r - crowded classrooms in school system. Until Oct. |, one fifth grade atEdgebrook ool had 48 students; however relocating some students, it has 43 students and is jht in room 22. Another fifth |ade has 41 students in room 8; le sixth grade has 41 students room 28; and still another grade has 40 students tin >m 9. "Hilltop has two fourth grade _ ims with 43 and 31 Students; two fifth grades with 36 and 37 [dents; and two sixth grades 42 students in each room, a good learning situation? „ "FACT 2. District 15 is desg^ fately trying to offer a better fflhan average education to our Children without frills. WE HAVE NO POOL IN OUR GRADE SCHOOLS. Furthermore, where are the frills? "The lack of rooms next year jnay require, the following cutlacks: at "1. Drop the basic skills program. "2. We would need to give 19 ability grouping and return to ; large sized classes with childm of widely varying abilities all classes. "3. Reading readiness and _ inning reading must be taught a small group situation. Teasers are unable to spend adeite time with students to give iem a good start in reading. A >r start in reading will affect teir progress in all subjects iroughout their school and ait life. "4. The Junior high would ed to operate on a split shift Lth possible hours of 7 a.m. noon; and noon to 5 p.m. "5. Home Economics and Industrial Arts would be offered only on a semester basis. 1 '6. Junior high English is now double class period with one concentrating on reading. English would be scheduled for only one period instead of two. "7. The current and future j ^itpaytoknW' large sized classes make it impossible to give any form of individualized instruction. This is already making it difficult, if not impossible, to provide an excellent and adequate level of education. "FACT 3. The Lake County $50,000 election cost quoted has nothing to do with School District 15. Would you rather not have an opportunity to vote on the bond issues? It is surely not the school board's fault the public will not recognize the facts they are presented and that a bond issue must be voted on three, four or more times. Again, I repeat, wake up and get the facts! "As for Con-Con, that is another issue altogether. Let's stick to School District 15, although the District 15 board is on record supporting Con-Con which they feel will alleviate the school's financial problems. "If you are not satisfied with the facts just presented or any other facts printed by the school district to inform the publiccome challenge them. The District 15 board of education meets at the Central Administration office, 3926 W. Main street, every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. If you really want to get involved, get your name on the school board ballot. There are elections every spring. By Local "When hard-fighting canti'- dates for the office of Illinois governor agree, that's lidws!' When the agreement is on' the5 necessity to call a constitutional convention in Illinois, thaffe good news for those of us who are working hard to inform the voter about the Nov. 5 vote on COT, Con" said Mrs, Doniald Meyer, Con-con chairlady of the League of Women Voters, of Woodstock and McHenry. Gov. Samuel H. Shapiro and Contender Richard B. Ogilvie, president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, gave outspoken support to Con Con at a meeting in Chicago sponsored by the Illinois State Bar association and the Chicago Bar association . Gov. Shapiro stated, "Ifirmly believe that now -- right now, this year - is the time for action in Illinois on the beginning of constitutional change. A look around us is enough to convince anyone, in my opinion-a look at the struggles within our state to make government a truly viable instrument; a look at our American federalism and the changing role of the states. PEOPLE'S NEEDS "To secure the ultimate in effective, responsible government in Illinois, we need participants who fully accept their duties, not who cause the vacuum which makes- the citizen turn to the federal government for action. We need, too, a consituation that does not ^shackle these representatives of the people." OUT OF STEP . He added, "Our state constitution is now outdated, outmoded and out of step with the life and problems of this age." Richard Ogilvie said, "Perhaps you are aware that the 18- 70 Constitution provides for the taxpaying of jugglers, among other persons. In the past several decades, believe me, it has been very taxing on jugglers in the state of Illinois today. We have to juggle our way between the facts we face and the myths or unrealities of the constitution, ICorner County Republican headquarters *' located on Route 14 in Crystal Lake at 9:30. We've juggled our way around the col-J; lection of personal property tax' and have set completely illegal1" rates on the assessment of per-u sonal property. And now we've juggled into a financial crisis.*'^ DOCUMENT OBSOLETE ri He commented further, "We' could live with the 1870 con-: stitution if it were obsolete only in those areas which are now'1 irrelevant. But this document is' obsolete in terms of equipping Illinois to meet its obligations to the people. If our state is to speak to social change and civil unrest then we must have a modern governmental framework within which to do it." Whoever becomes governor of Illinois when the votes are counted Nov. 5 has spoken. He has called for the help only a new constitution can give to the office of governor. He has said that state government is only as good as the constitution directs and permits it to be. Mrs. Daniel Weisz, president of the local League, declared, "Your candidate asks you for a favorable vote on calling a constitutional convention for Illinois. Are you helping to spread that word?" She also announced that the League of Women Voters of Illinois received an Award of Merit from Citizens of Greater Chicago at that group's annual luncheon on Oct. 16. The award reads in part " .. .for long and dedicated activity in behalf of constructive revision of our antiquated state constitution." "We are proud to have had a part in earning this award", said Mrs. Weisz.
